View Full Version : Through the Eyes of a Servant

((I've decided to write a history of Hyperion through my eyes as a Lord of Hyperion, a member of the clergy, and as a citizen of the Republic of the Silver Sun. Feel free to leave comments and such, I'll add more as time goes on.))

As I arose from my bed in the Basilica of Soacio with the warmth of Our Fathers Light streaming through the curtains, my mind took me back to a time not so long ago, yet a time seemingly now out of reach.

It was a normal summers day, I was buried in my books frantically learning everything I possibly could about Our Father Auros. The town of Soacio was bustling with life outside of my window. About Noon my teacher Father Siverous deMedeci knocked on the door. “Brother Honorius a Herald of Wessex has come to town, he is making an announcement in the town square.” I quickly got up and we headed towards the square. Our Republic and the Duchy of Wessex have been close allies and friends for many years now and we have taken on several campaigns together.

As we neared the square we could see who the Duke had sent. It was Komako. Komako was a very wise Herald for a Mirdain at least, and he and I had both worked together in past campaigns when I was still the Mayor of Soacio. “Good citizens of the Lands of Aquilea today I bring you news from His Grace Manus Dei Duke of Wessex. From henceforth the lands of Wessex, Elba, Kirdain, Urth, and Aquilea will be joined together under one banner to be called The Kingdom of Hyperion.”

There was a great silence among the crowd; I looked to Siverous who showed no signs of shock or surprise. I would later learn that as Bishop Siverous was a Lord of Hyperion and was of member of Manus’ council.

Moments later our Doge Brandoreous deMedeci brother of Siverous and cousin of Manus came and addressed the crowd. “My good people of Aquilea, today marks a new day in not only our history, but the history of the world, together with our brothers in this newly formed Kingdom we will leave our mark and show everyone our true power and potential.”

There was a great roar of applause from the crowd, everyone appeared to be in great favor of this, and if there were any dissenters that day I could not find one.

A few days later Siverous, Brando, myself, and a few others went to visit Wessex to meet our new allies and hopefully friends. As soon as we walked through the gates we saw a who’s who of political masterminds and leaders. There was Surly von Fishbarrel leader of the Society of the Anvil and House Armorsmith of Wessex, his ministers, Red Morgan leader of his Drunken Beggars, and a Mirdain known as Treefingers head of the mysterious Church of Thelema. From Kirdain there was the Duke Elder Thor, and his Bishop Valens Bellator, along with their Admiral whose name escapes me. From Wessex we saw Thirlan who was known the world over for his mastery of all things monetary, the Dukes brother Miles who was one of the most dashing men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, Theodoric the wise Bishop f Wessex, and of course our good friend Komako the Hawk who had been promoted to Head of Heralds. And from a group known as Vico Vinci Victum there was Bishop Baenor.

All of those Bishops were trained and ordained by Siverous deMedeci. Perhaps that was clue enough to see Hyperion coming, but I suppose the only one who saw through it all was Merrin. Merrin was to be the Archbishop of the Holy Church of Auros, he had set up and planned everything from the beginning, but disputes over the treatment of a man named Protonix sent Merrin away from Hyperion and he formed his own religious group known as the Red Order back then, but to most now are known as the Sword of Expulsion. But perhaps I am rambling….

Out in the streets the people of Wessex were either shouting elations, or cursing the people who have caused such deceit. For you see Manus and Surly very cleverly if you ask me set up a sort of fake rivalry between their factions in the hopes of gaining more members, and it did work, but some of the members were not so happy about working with those who they thought were once their enemies. Eventually though most members of Wessex grew to like the members of Anvil for they were perhaps some of the strongest fighters in the land. Unfortunately Anvil never really respected or liked Wessex.

After we spent some time chatting in the street, the Duke told us to come inside so we could discuss the future of our new Kingdom.

“So to the first order of business, we will need a glorious capital city for out new Kingdom. As some of you already know, I have been working on this for years now, and I am happy to say the city is nearly complete.” Tigus Shrowe, my successor as Mayor of Soacio asked. “And what will this city be called my Grace?” “Sol Invictus.” Manus replied.

“Now” the Duke went on, “There will be two Lords from each shire, of course the current Dukes and leaders will be one, but there will also be a Lord Spiritual or Bishop from each shire. This will allow everyone two votes in the council of Lords.” Baenor of Vico Vinci Vinctum then asked, “What of me Lord? Vico Vinci Vinctum is not a shire of Hyperion, yet I am a Bishop of the Holy Church.” “You too shall have a vote Lord Baenor, this way we will have some outside perspective into things.” Surly was the next to speak, “What if we refuse to be associated with a racist organization as this Church?” “Then you will not receive a second vote.” Manus calmly replied.
“To help bolster the population of Sol Invictus I would like to ask that if it is possible could you ask your citizens if they would like to become citizens.” Brando and Thor both said “I am sorry my liege, but I am afraid we do not have the men to spare.” “That is fine” stated Manus “Wessex and Urth both should have enough to support Sol Invictus until we get our number up.”

“Now as for the other major issues such as taxes and formations they will be dealt with when we understand more of this Grand Campaign. But the man in charge of Taxes and in charge of the Reeves of the Kingdom will be Thirlan, and the man to lead the combined armies of Hyperion will be my cousin Brando, who has already set in place a formation and drilling system within Aquilea and Wessex, and he will help set up drills and formations for Urth and Kirdain as well.”

The meeting was then adjourned and we all went back to our respective shires. This was a time of great activity and planning among the council of Lords, but alas my knowledge of this time is very little, for at this time I was still just a Deacon of the Church. But I do know of the basics of what went on during this time.

Firstly, the clergy took an active role in defending the Holy Church of Auros from Merrin and his Order. These were perhaps the greatest debates ever to be seen not only in our world, but perhaps any other world out there.

Also during this time Hyperion accepted into it’s ranks a band of people who went by the name of Yew. Yew was known the world over for not only their oratorical skills, but also for their fighting prowess they were a perfect match with Hyperion. The Republic and Yew had a particular bond and in fact they both campaigned together in the lands of Divinity.

The rest of what I know of this time consists of Brandoreous teaching drills and formations to the other shires and it was during this time that what was to be our greatest rival during the campaign rose to power.

They called themselves the Savage Alliance, a group of tribes made of the filth of the world, the Mahirim and the Ork. This alliance was created by a disgraced ex member of Hyperion and in particular the Society of the Anvil Brandulfr.

What happened next was the most humbling and surprising thing to happen in my life. My teacher Siverous had decided to step down from his position of Bishop to focus solely on his Order, the Order d’Argento. I would later learn that Siverous stepped down due to his arguments with the King in regards to the direction of the Church, and perhaps if I knew fully of what went on I would never had taken the position.

But I did, and so I began studying even more for in order to become a Bishop I must first take a long and arduous exam. Once I felt ready I began, I spent a total of four straight days finishing the exam, it was the most difficult and thought provoking exam I have ever taken. Despite my doubts I passed, and was ordered to go to Wessex for my ordainment. I arrived in Wessex only to find everyone far too busy to deal with me, so I returned to Soacio and in fact I was never ordained as Bishop.

Soon after my indoctrination into the House of Lords, the first of us went to scope out the lay of the land these were not only Lords who went to survey but commoners as well. There were some great men in this group, men like Spaw Kindred, Slash Redhand, Kal Morte, and Typhon Basteel.

During our first survey, we took in yet another shire and lost one. We gained a strong ally in Bewharer de Walton, a people who spoke a strange language led by Lady Noraya. But we lost the shire of Yew, for reasons unbeknownst to me, perhaps they felt there morals were being stifled under Hyperion, or they feared for their public image, well whatever the reason it is hard to dislike them for they were still some of the most respectable people in the world.

The instance we arrived in the land where the Grand Campaign would take place we immediately began scoping out the land. We quickly found a grand spot near the sea named Alberworth. Commoners and Lords alike worked to collect materials like wood and stone to help build up our grand city., even the King himself helped in the process.

Well, Honorius, you've made me nostalgic even if I was far to junior at that stage to have known of these glorious events.

The hyped abomination has been slain by the hand of the righteous—let it rot in the pit of death and decay that it has prepared for itself.

Ah Merrin, how good to see you again. And I'm suprised you don't think Hyperion will rise again.

And it was hardly the hand of the righteous, in fact good Father our ways have all but vanished since the demise of Hyperion.
