Haha, awesome, so Darkfall will have...

... A player run economy, ships, alignment, horses, manual targetting, 500 skills! ... Are we backtracking on the sieges?

The best part about that interview was putting the development time in perspective - starting development in early 2003 is a lot different than in 2001. At least it's forthcoming, although a bit disappointing. I was under the impression that races and the worldmap were finished as of a couple years ago - didn't realize that was news.

It will be interesting to see what happens post E3, I guess.

I wouldn't get too excited about ARAC. Beyond the alignment thing, there's racial faction. I doubt a Human guard would ever accept an Alfar player any where near him, same alignment or not.

Don't know for how long they have been complete, just put it in there cause people were worried after the video that the races aren't all done.

Nice one, i knew your gonna post it soon ;) thx for all

Too bad dev's couldnt just say few of those as "update", so people not reading forum much would have a formal answer for question: Is DarkFall a dream? And yeah, next time you meet them, tell them to tell in number of % , where 100% means ready for beta :D

Edit: Looks like everything is made, but they are making some cosmetic changes and adding some more stuff.

Hmmmm i'm unimpressed to say the least.

So basically its been in proper development for less that 3 years

When was the last beta sign up other than the most recent one?

How could they even suggest a beta if they have only been properly developing the game for 3 years? Why have sign ups if they never intended it?

Expect more news a month or so after E3.So July-August is the next expected contact with the community?

All the videos and screens are from a graphics revision that is going to be replaced with the new all shiny kick ass one just before E3, so expect the graphics to look even better that the video, and we are not talking about detail level. Also how many damn graphics revisions are there going to be, there are 3 set of graphics that i know of floating about on the web all looking different, if it's not just level of detail what could it be that would not be alot of work?

Hardly a wealth of new information i would expect to see from speaking with the Devs for 2 hours.

Sorry if i seem a bit pissed off but i was hoping for more... alot more. Guess i should be use to it by now :(

If i had one question to ask it would be why they do not talk to the community any more.

Only good thing i can take from this is they are not cutting anything.

There never were any beta sign ups other than clan beta. And I wouldn't say they are beta sign ups, more like guild registration.

The gloom effect is most likely a player option, so you can't count that one. Every game upgrades their graphics as they go on, it's the normal way to do it, otherwise you get old desuet ones. It's not unusual to see different graphics in the retail than the ones we get in beta, so don't expect the game to look like the previous screenshots (or the video) we have seen.

Also... Rumors are... There *might* not be all that much more to be done other than upgrading the graphics. Take it for what it's worth.

If i had one question to ask it would be why they do not talk to the community any more.

They have answered that one in the past, and Shaar got the exact same answer this time around.

From this new information, we have at least learned that they already planned on starting up the information machine about a month after e3. I'm glad to at least have a heads up on this matter.

Each spell being single skill seem a bit weird though.
Not too strange. Anybody who has played Meridian 59 will be very acquainted with this type of approach.

Myself, I'm glad to hear that they completely ditched the "partial lock-on" system for some spells altogether. Having to manually aim heals 4tw!

Truly, Shaar is teh winnar. :D

Regarding the post above this: there was a very small pre-alpha in 2001, and the devs mused about doing beta back in fall 2003. They mentioned it, but they never actually rolled out forms like they did in 2005. They opted not to, and now we know why!

Justinian
04-17-2006, 09:27 PM
I imagine they asked for beta applicants as proof to their would-be investors that there was/is/will be substantial demand for this game. Investors like proof of profitability, and the devs showed it to them.

That may not be the case, but it makes the most sense, pragmatically speaking.

Oh yeah, and thanks very much for the effort Shaar.

From what I understand, Aventurine's management are the investors. The game sounds like it's already mostly-complete from a design & code perspective, so now I imagine they are looking for distributors for beta & retail, working out hosting arrangements for servers, etc., etc.

If that is indeed the case, then it makes sense for them to be prying around E3 this year. All the big names in the industry will be there, so it'll make it easy for them to get in contact with interested parties and work out details.

500+ skills in game. Adding a few more here and there if necessary. Each spell is a skill by itself.
To me this means there will be less than i originally imagined, if they are counting "fireball" "Magic Missles" "Fire Shield" etc as skills. :(

Where there beta announcements in 2001 and 2003?

Says who?

Care to link me or tell me then?

Yes they announced beta in 2001. Four guys working on a garage project did. That's how senseless it was. Imagine doing a project like DF with 3 of your friends. Don't you get excited to tell the world about it? How in a year you could start beta and so on? Sure you do. They were rookies and they got PWNT by reality.

Notice what Shaar said about proper development. I think it pretty much matches the time at which they merged with Aventurine. Prior to that it was just vaporware.

You know how rumors work, pick up a dictionnary if you don't.

I will not look through all the information that is already available to find a link. You can do it yourself if you don't believe me. Tasos said it, Claus said it. It goes something like: <claus> "We already shared too much information with the community. And we did it much too early. Now we're working on the game. The information is already available."

And Tasos, in a short update, talked about the lack of communication. I know we can't agree with them, but it's how it is so we'll have to live with it.

I agree - I was replying to Spinewire's post concerning the beta signups they've done in the past, before they really had real investment/commitment. They most likely wanted to make sure that there really was a demand for the product before shelling out hundreds of thousands (probably more) of dollars on it.

According to old statements (read: take with a grain of salt), only some 10% of skills/spells are limited by race or prestige class. The remaining 90% are open to everybody, more or less.

Assuming that there's about a 50/50 split between spells and skills, that still leaves us with a pretty good number. UO had a mere 64 spells, and maybe only a dozen of those saw regular use, so 250 is quite a dramatic increase in scope. :D

Meridian 59 uses the same spells-as-skills approach, and it has 148 spells divided across 6 spell schools, each comprised of 6 levels apiece. It works very well, if I may say so myself.

No, a character you make will not have 500 skills. To be effective in 500 skills would take a lifetime (literally) of doing nothing but playing the game. You should pick and choose a small number to get to at least journeyman status, and then pick up some minor ones to supplement you while you continue to train up your "specialized" skills. The devs have mentioned that learning skills is different from training them. Everyone will not start with 500 skills.

Every class on WoW had probably 10-20 different skills and abilities, talents notwithstanding. You didn't have to train them, though; you only had to level up and then buy them from a trainer. In DF, you train them by using them.

Tasos said that to me as well. Too many things were told about the game waaay to early. Now is the time to finish it up and let it speak for it self. Some may not agree with this, I don't even agree with it fully, but that's what they think they should do and that's what they are doing.

You're so full of shit it almost hurts my bowels to read your post! Don't pretend to have followed Darkfall for 5 years if you haven't (and you haven't). They fed information regularly for 3 and a half years. The last one and a half has been a lock down, but it hasn't been THAT bad.

Granted, this topic doesn't shed much light... but it wasn't supposed to. The only thing it's here for is to give us a little insight into what's going on, and when we can expect some real meat.

Yeah i should write character could learn about 500 skills, but this doesnt change my point ;). Thx for the lecture, but i ( and everybody here i guess ) dont think that everyone will start with 500 skills, nobody said that, im sure it wont even happen ever.

Hope you don`t end up with Goats, if you do, I hope they can haul a lot in compensation for low speed. You know that idea originally came on these boards, we still accuse WoW for stealing it. Those bastards.

Regarding Mirdain mounts.. Do not give us Unicorns, those are suppose to be rare. Well, maybe the rules apply different in the Darkfall universe on some points, in which case we`ll just have to adapt. Either way, can`t wait.

Looks of the Mirdain, we started out colored as humans, but we suddenly turned grey, what happened there.. the silver connection ? I don`t know.

No they won't. I specificaly aksed about reds and guards.

You asked about reds and guards, but does that really cover ARAC guilds? Will alfar npcs still attack any human they see? After all a human that kills humans may be "evil" or red aligned to humans, but might actually be "good" as far as Alfar are concerned. Do the npc KOS settings for good/evil alignment override the racial alignments now? That would be kinda sucky imo, but I'm not sure your question proves that has changed, unless you specifically asked about ARAC, not just reds.

When I first read "no comment" about siege and city building I almost went crazy. Then you posted about the evil grin and I started to see in the devs heads. Then you made my ideas into words, i had a feeling they may want to keep it hush hush until beta starts.

Just about the spells being considered spells, hope this doesnt limit your versitality to a point. (eg taking a tank mage type char your gonna take something like :

Weapon skill
Heal [of some sort]
Resist
Magery [subclass / element]
Perhaps some kind of amplify magic spell/buff
Then your offence spell or two
+ Anything else that could be essential, obviously dont know what the could be at the moment.

^ Just hoping that you dont come out with everyone choosing the best 2 spell combo to use, so everyone is the same. However if the game is very well balanced in this regard then it does promote character uniqueness, i guess only time will tell though.

So I'm reading this info dump and I'm thinking...

1) Who's that weird looking guy squatting down on the right? He looks insane! Whoever that guy is he should immediately start acting in horror movies.

2) "limited gold and wares" Cool, limited gold. If you actually do this, you'll get free press on CNN, fortune magazine and every other form of media just because economist couldn't resist this experiment. Plus, you'll be able to control inflation/deflation - see every post I ever wrote on the economy for examples.

3) Great, the dev team will be talking to other companies at E3. Wow, that's poopariffic!

***********************************
Wouldn't it be ironic if Darkfall was purchased by a major publisher, say I don't know, someone like Ubisoft? We'd all have a nice healthy laugh over that one. Oh boy, what fun...

Talking to other companies? Whatever the fuck for? You guys could do that without even making a game.

Ya know, Wolfpack visited E3 for the first time ever and a few months later they announced that they would be published by Ubisoft. So what are the odds that lightning would strike twice? Tune in this Summer and find out!
***********************************

4) No Comment, we told people too much, the development hasn't taken a long time at all.

Did I fall asleep and wake up in history rewrite world? WTF are you people talking about? Exhibit A) Sieging has a gloomer. No one likes that idea "on paper" so the devs have "no commented" it for years. Exhibit B) The developers didn't tell too much to people, they just stopped. There hasn't been a lot of interaction (again in years) between the DFO team and the community, and what little there has been has felt more like a Dr's visit where you sit in the waiting room forever before being hurried a long only to sit more in an examination room, 30 minutes later seeing the Dr. so he can explain that he must refer you to a specialist who works exclusively on your needs. Exhibit C) I was here when there were 4 guys in a basement, they never mentioned to me (at any point) that they weren't "really" in development. It must have slipped their mind. Just to recap, I've finished college, gotten married, worked at 3 different jobs, had two kids and I'm working on my third right now. I've done all of that while waiting for Darkfall to finish development. Hell, I've been waiting for beta during all that time. So please stop right there and don't insult me with this "it hasn't been that long" bullshit. Wow, is that ever pissing me off.

5) I still wish the developers all the best, and I hope whatever they do - even if they sell out and/or make a shitty game (or don't make any game, whatever) - I hope they get whatever it is they want out of life. For the past 400 years, I've gotten a lot out of following this game, talking to the people that are "making it" (I no longer know what that really means) and interacting with the community (who overall deserves a "kick ass" game like no other community has).

6) This better be a "kick ass" game. Or, or, or....

Nothing.

I think they're looking for a North American publisher. Not necessarily someone to buy them out.

DF is going to be at E3? Damn, Oblivion has kept me away from DF for too long. When did this news come about?
[/LIST]Thanks Shaar.

They're not showcasing the game though.

I wonder a few things:
Did you miss the "we announced it way too early bit?"
Did you miss the many "Please don't follow the game so closely, get out, do something else instead of camping the board, because it is going to take as long as it takes?"-bit too?

We chose to follow the game and come back here. They didn't force us to do that nor do we pay them money to feed us information (just for the heck so we can whine about it anyway - which this and every other update they make is proof of). In fact, I write it again: They told us several times to sit back and relax and do something else. Yet you blame THEM for YOU being here for so long? Ohh, the irony..

Damnit, I know it's frustrating but hell - if you want to blame someone, blame yourself. Just because we hang out here everyday doesn't mean they owe us more..at least I prefer honest updates and not bullshit infos and fake screens just to keep people happy.

And just for the record - holy you sure don't waste time, do you ;)

It's like the first love. When you fall in love for the first time you think this is the true love, nothing is going to seperate you etc...- and 2 weeks later it's over. A few years and several relationships later you have a total different point of few, and what you thought to be your real love is only an afterglow...

Edit: Btw, i don't think it was wrong telling so much in the very early stages of developing. Probably a lot of good input from those early community members has made it into the game - at this stage now only minor changes can be made.

You misunderstood me. It's cool that Shaar wrote this article and took pictures - thank you! But I don't really get it why the devs were there. PR? Not really... this so called billboard looked rather poor IMO.

Why do the devs attend an expo where only a handful of people is really interested in the game? It would have made more sense if only ONE dev showed up on IRC and talked about the state of the game for like 1 hour.

I'm happy to read naval battles will kick ass and that ships are a real part of the game not only something patched into the game. My pirate ship will be ready to set the jolly roger and start plundering ;)

Thanks Shaar for the article.

yeah right, that's probably when we will get thrown a table scrap of information next.

"hows combat?" .... "it kicks ass"
"hows the weapons?" ... "They kick ass"
"hows magic" .... "It kicks ass"

"can you tell me anything else" ... "the game kicks ass!"

*sigh*

as if a developer is going to tell you "oh combat sucks and seiging sucks it's so dull"

some of you people are fricken gullible.
