View Full Version : Zerg vs Reality vs How to Win

The "Z" word is being flung about again. You've all heard it. Some of you employ it like a tool for your own means. Some of you defend against it in order to further your own goals.
When did having more forces than the opposition become an immoral tactic?
When did strength in numbers become such a terrible way to win?
Is there a parallel for this in real life? Nazi Germany's Blitz Kreig? Russia's Red Army? Gehngis Kahn and the Mongolian Horde?
Who thought those were bad things? Oh yeah, the guys that got ate up. To them, the 'zerg' was evil incarnate. To the guys with the majority of combatants, well, they were just kickin ass and taking names.
Ok, so how do you beat a zerg in an mmo?? Well, you can:
1) Form your own zerg. IOW: Match fire with fire and build up to equal numbers, thus nullifying their advantage.
2) Fight them where superior numbers make no difference. AKA Forums (Politics) (The UN) (The Geneva Convention) whatever.
This second method is a great way to start your counter offensive as it only requires smart, politically minded charismatic speakers to swing public opinion into your court.
All the while you can work on 1) in order to match forces and become the victor.
Darkfall is such a lovely laboratory for human interaction.
Carry on, carry on

People will say whatever they can to justify why they lost, and how someone else isn't better than them.
Thus, zerg.

truth.
The point at the end of the day is you either won or lost.
there are means to winning that are unacceptable however, such as hacking.
But crying zerg, while self-gratifying, is nothing more than someone whining that you only lost cuz the enemy was using a polearm with the superior reach while you were leafblading it up.
but we all need excuses every now and then, myself included.

When we win I still call the enemy a zerg, makes the victory even more satisfying. Which is what Zealots alliance is going for I believe.
Personal skill and teamwork over numbers.

i wouldnt say a zerg is rolling in numbers but running out of your city with a starter staff and mana missle is a problem. at most that should do 4 damage.
On that note no one lets people run into thier city and leave peacefully but damn. its called a ready bag

Zergs kill all fun in sandbox mmog's, and inevitably kill the game. The end.

Ive always called them seige bags, since we were involved in alot of seiges back when we started. But same principal.. A bag with all the shit youll need to be "geared", take it, drop a mount and sort it out while you go.
Honestly im much more afriad of a geared 20+ group, then ill ever be of nakies staggering at of their city trying to MM someones mount.

Stuff
That was RL - People's lives were on the line, and I heard they didn't respawn.
However, in a video game, whenever you get a bunch of people who aren't that good gathered up against a few that are actually good, and the huge faceless multitude of people prevail, it's killing the need for anyone to be "good" or talented anymore. Why worry about that when you can just bring 5x the numbers and not even be on vent, be downloading porn, eating a pop tart and playing with one hand and winning?
You're comparing apples and oranges here -- RL is not a game. A game is not RL.
Yes, bringing more numbers is intelligent, but when you leave people without means to counter this sentiment, you're setting up a system in which all fights will be decided by numbers. No one wants to play a game where it's not dependent upon your talent, but on how many people you can get to not have a life and be on red alert all day in case three talented players come attack your pixels, so you can send out 12 against them and hope that you can wear their stamina down low enough so the first 5 that die can finish them off after they spawn naked at the bindstone while the other 7 that are still alive parry whore for their lives.

'And alot of other good stuff'.
Ok, Rhade, good post.
I agree with what you're saying about quality gaming. And if I understand your point, I agree that the way to negate the zerg mentality in gaming is to make skill and gear even more of an overarching advantage than numbers.
Earlier you suggested that making newb staffs deal minor MINOR damage a method of this.
Others have suggested that no armor (nekkid) should spell fast and assured death. I agree with this too.
My original post was not meant as a plea for all the 'good things with zergs'. It was a question about why and how people fight against it.

Canis -
This was a really bad post and not necessary at all. -10 for obvious, +2 for length / effort. Not a big deal just, didn't come across good at all. Reads like you died ten minutes before you posted to a group of people and let your steam out on this "rant"
2 out of 10 thumbs up.
