This game looks sweet I was wondering if i could get any comparison to UO from some old school players...
Ive been looking on the forums and main page for answers to a few questions with no help so I posted them below. Hopefully someone can help me out
1 Is skill gain similar? Like 50-60 use this spell/craft this/kill this monster 60-70 ect... if so, are there any guides posted anywhere yet?
2 What would you say given the stage of the new NA-1 shard the time frame would be (hrs) before your character is able to not get owned?
3 Is there a recall/gate system like UO? Do you really have to spend hours traveling from place to place?
4 Is there anywhere I can find a full layout of all skills/spells in the game?
5 Is there anywhere I can find a full layout of all the commands/controls of the game?
6 How is the economy and trade system of the game working so far? Is it hard to sell all your shit while your trying to skill gain? Can everything crafted be sold to NPC's? Is gold hard to obtain?
7. Is there a max on total points in a status bar (hp,mana,stam.. UO was 220) Or can your guy have 100 100 100 100 all the way down?

A great number of us played UO back in 97. We aren't here by accident. Great time to join, as the NA server just went up 10 days ago, and the game is far improved from its EU release.

1 No its not similar to the way you described. You get equal gain on everything but you need to actually succeed. That includes combat skills, fizzling or not hitting your target with spells, melee or arrows results in no gain. I have noticed since expansion I seem to get a fair bit of skill gain from enemy races more than guild mates but that could be just a co-incidence. You definitely do get a lot just from regular pve.
2 At least 2-3 hrs. The reason being u start naked, with a short range noobie weap and no gold, unless a guild mate comes and hands you some trash gear, staffs and weapons you wont be gaining skill until you have finished killing a couple things and getting the gold to buy or loot such items. Plus the learning curve seems steep for some. Once you have worked yourself out its fine from there.
3 There are runestones which are 1 way recall runes with 1 charge basically. They take a while to mark and only available thru drops. Realtively rare. There are nexuses which are moon gates but u need to drop the entrance then go to the other side with a runestone or run there and drop the exit. I spose u could use a clan bank to pass it to some1 on the otherside too. These can be destroyed tho.
3 b) As for travel it depends where ur travelling - opposing races are about 30 mins ride in some direction. If your looking for blues to kill theres plenty in your own area and player cities will always be the best place to find GvG.
4 DarkfallInfo.com, darkfallsage.com - they wont help you tho :)
5 In game help, the input bindings tab and / and using tab completion. Anywhere online? no idea.
6 You can sell crafted stuff to npc - not as profitable in UO. In fact u will make no money from selling crafted stuff to npc. You can make good cash selling to players. There will be an element of skill grind but you guild will be able to use all ur trash (r0 weapons needed for skill gain etc).
6 b) Gold is realtively easy to get, but not in the mass amounts as UO. Loot is still quite valuable.
7. No caps as yet.
Summary: If you like uo and werent playing some carebear shard since IPY died, then u will find darkfall great. Its got a bit to go to catch up to UO's legendary status but it is getting there slowly.
I played UO from release to just after factions launched. About 5 years. EU1 has an alliance of old chessy guilds - Shadow Syndicate/Oinland/Blood(KoC)/-Z-(Dark Arcane)
1. Skill gain currently is only "if hit, may gain". Creature skill level does not matter.
2. 0 hours. You could survive someone that has 3 months behind them. Requires some FPS skills. Not to gloat, I survived a pack of 6 mounted players on EU1 when I had less than 20 skill points in everything. I annoyed them enough to run away, dismount, and come attack me on foot. I still almost made it to town when they did that.
3. They just added a Nexus system thats kindof a cross between Gate Travel and moongates. Only so many people can go through it, and either side can be destoryed. You can recall to your bindstone at any time (if the skill does not fail), and you can get one use runes to mark locations.
4 and 5. Use Google and look up "Darkfall Wiki" and you will find several websites that have information about the game mechanics.
6. Trade system is based either on Trade chat, or clans/guilds trading with each other. There is no easy way to get to a buyer, its local. If you want to sell wood, you have to say something like "selling 100 wood in elf lands" so people know where you are to buy. Travel from elf lands to human lands can take 45 minutes, its a huge map. I just bought 400 mandrake from another player, and I sell steedgrass all the time in the trade chat. There is an economy, and if your trying to rip people off (selling steedgrass for 600 in trade chat) someone usually calls you out.
7. You have one character. Hopefully caps will never happen. Everything in the game is a skill to raise, spells, spell casting line, armor, you name it, it goes up. Putting in a cap would be ackward, to say the least. A mages nightmare.

I played on chessy and atlantic since 1997, quit in 08. Played with Atomic Gods A*G, Sigil Stealers S-S, OC, UZI, and a couple others. I'm not sure if its the same 0inland on EU, i heard they are from a different game. If it is the same, they were some of the best pvpers I've fought.
I just started df about a week ago, and can say the skill/stat gain system is the slowest I've seen. However I think its for the better in the long term, more people to pk and encourages teamwork.

This game is NOTHING like UO so don't kid yourself. Yah I know they told us it would be, but they lied. Still a decent game until MO comes out. (2 years from now) A better comparison to this game would be Shadowbane.

Haha, I haven't heard the name IPY in SOO long. I used to play on IPY and Metropolis a good number of years ago. I'm thinkin about starting up darkfall again, but don't know if some of the problems I had with it have been addressed.
I just recently got the darkfall email about the NA server and the big patching. I played a week after release for about a month, but sold my account due to the bugs in the game, and lack of time to play the game at the time. How are the bugs doing? Do Mahirim have their racial run ability yet? Can gankers still speedhack and run into cities/safe zones and kill with no penalty? And lastly, have there been fixes to prevent the "legal" ganking in safe zones, where the guard towers work toward the benefit of people surrounding you at anvils/banks, etc?

None of those problems have been addressed other than the "legal" ganking, that is if I understand what you mean by that.

I played UO Catskills.. One of the highest decorated tourny winners, Gandar.
Then a bunch of us played Metropolis about a year or so back.. 7 friends, my cousin, my brother, my fiance.. We rolled deep. Had a tower right out front SE brit.
Too many cheaters on that shit though it got boring for those of us who just wanted fair fights and fun. So we quit...
Now im playing stag on DF.

I have no direct connection to KoC, other than fighting both their reds and blues on chessy and hearing stories about Blood on AC Darktide (I never played AC).

omg A*G, thats a name I have totally forgotten about. Yea, this game is no UO, they went apeshit with skills. If spells and styles did not require to be "skilled up" this game would be perfect.
Oinland has been in a sad state the past few years. It went from a top notch pvp guild in UO to a WoW carebear raiding guild. I think a couple of the core members, or ex-core, joined with the Blood/-S-/KoC/Dreadlord(-Z-) alliance on EU1. I don't know specifics, or exactly what clan OIN are in, or if they are even still playing. Same thing with -Z-, I dont think they are standing on their own either, just absorbed somewhere within that alliance.
I hate to say it (because I still dislike -S-), but it seems strong guilds stick together for years and years. Storm has -S- locked down and Splixx and his crew know how to run their operation. They make great opponents.

In that particular way, somewhat. There are certain spells which are the cheapest way to level up their schools, etc. Unlike UO though you don't have a hard skill cap. There are plenty of threads about the best way to level <foo> in the skills subforum.
2 What would you say given the stage of the new NA-1 shard the time frame would be (hrs) before your character is able to not get owned?
Depends on who you're going up against; one of the things that separates DF from UO in a pretty major way is the differentiation in skill levels. In UO, pretty much everyone went to the skill cap and was on relatively even ground (but could still own a newbie). Since Darkfall doens't have a hard cap, some players are far above the norm (and others are below it). I'm not playing on NA-1 currently, so I can't really speak to the skill levels there. Still, you should be relatively survivable even to start with. When you get to Mana to Stamina and Stamina to HP, this survivability will increase even more.
3 Is there a recall/gate system like UO? Do you really have to spend hours traveling from place to place?
It takes quite a while to travel on foot (or mounted, though that's a lot faster). There are runestones, but they can only be used once before disappearing - they're more of an emergency travel method than na everyday one. There are also nexus portals, which are a multi user transport system (though they do have a use cap). Travel times do a good job of localizing war - it's not time effective to combat an enemy far from your city, and similarly an enemy can't immediately get back to your city if they die in / around it.
4 Is there anywhere I can find a full layout of all skills/spells in the game?
http://www.darkfallsage.com/ (unofficial)
5 Is there anywhere I can find a full layout of all the commands/controls of the game?
http://www.eu1.darkfallonline.com/help/
6 How is the economy and trade system of the game working so far? Is it hard to sell all your shit while your trying to skill gain? Can everything crafted be sold to NPC's? Is gold hard to obtain?
You can sell stuff to NPCs, but it's usually a large loss. Typically, advancing crafters donate their gear to their clans and are similarly funded by clan gatherers. Darkfall is very much a group based game.
Materials are easier to sell than completed goods in my experience; people want the skillups most of the time unless you can make exceptional items.
Gold is relatively easy to come by, but not over-abundant. Not really sure how to quantify that.
7. Is there a max on total points in a status bar (hp,mana,stam.. UO was 220) Or can your guy have 100 100 100 100 all the way down?
You can have high attributes everywhere.

1. Skill gain is independed on what ability you use, although some abilities are still broken and only raise the ability and not the skill. Just a word of warning, there is no game i've played that has more of a grind than darkfall (aside from muds I played 10+ years ago that have no end). This is a game that is supposed to be played, where your character always has something to work towards, skill wise.
2. This is a hard question to accurately answer, but I'll answer it in a way that most people are interested in. Most people want to know, how long will it take to be able to compete, or be on par with against the best players in the game. To be able to be viable against the top players (skill and character progression) you are looking at, somewhere in the ballpart of 2100 hrs. This is assuming your working towards skill progression almost the entire time.
Another word of warning, don't let people fool you and tell you that a character is viable with only a few weeks of playing. Sure you can make a character that can beat 90% of the players in few weeks of hardcore grinding. However, to have a fair chance against all players in the game, you need certain skills that will take you months.
3. There are a few ways to travel.
Bindstone recall: there are bindstones all over agon, there is one in every city/hamlet, NPC city, and random wilderness bindstones. You can bind your character to one bindstone. You can then bindstone recall (teleport) to your bindstone, a process that takes a 2 minute cast.
Runestone: you can mark runes. Runes are dropped of certain monster, are a uncommom drop, they sell for about 500 gold. They drop often enough and are cheat enough that, you can use them semi-regularly. For example, I would use runestones about once or twice a day.
Runestones only have 1 charge, meaning once you recall using the runestone, it is destroyed.
Runestone take 3 minutes to 'mark' and 2 minutes to 'recall'.
4. Not sure, as far as I know there is a no website that has an accurate detailed layout of every skill in the game. However the game isn't to difficult to figure out, I don't think this will be a problem for you. Just know that there is no hard-skill cap and there is also no soft-skill cap.
5. Unfortunately no, however the game is pretty easy to figure out, being FPS automatically removes of ton of hotkeys the game would normally come with. During initial login there are some basic controls the game tells you. There is also a /help command.
6. This is a hard question to answer. The economy has a lot supply of most resources, so for the most part it is easy to sell. There are a few resources that are in moderate to high supply and moderate to hard to sell, such as iron/ore, wood/timber, herbs, and fish. Most other resources are easy to sell.
7. There is no cap on total stats.
I'm the only founding member of Oinland still playing MMO's (from the 97-2000 Chessy days).
Playing EU-1 with Blood, in the Cairn alliance. Tons of old Chesapeake players here.
I was on EU1, but having a 300ms - 500ms ping made it a crap shoot. Getting 70ms on NA1. The world needs to upgrade the internet.

Oinland in WoW was the best arena guild in Archimonde. Ya we had to raid to be competative in WoW, but the raiding led to success on the pvp end. Google WoW/Archimonde/Oinland and all you'll see is posts about how feared OiN was. We were also the first guild to completely take over NPC cities and we did this in the first weeks of release with our army of mages. A lot of UO oinland did leave after they realized there was no point in being good at pvp in WoW though due to the lack of loot.
Oinland and -Z- are both playing under Blood in DF. Small, tight knit guilds are pretty much useless in this game. GMs Souldancer(-Z-) and Agent Orange (OiN) have been friends with Sethdrone/Chupa for years. Playing under one tag makes the most sense.

WoW and pvp do not belong in the sentence.
I understand the need to combine guilds over time due to member loss, I have merged with and split from several guilds myself (-S- being one of them I split away from); you can't compete with less than 30 players in any game.
It seems people want to zerg it up in Darkfall, just like the start of Shadowbane. Huge zergs was one thing that helped destroy Shadowbane. The huge zergs also removed both -S- and KoC from the Shadowbane map at release. I hope the zergs do not destroy Darkfalls growing playerbase.
One think I would like to know is, will the Cairn/blood alliance move to NA1 or will they stick with their pixels on EU1? I hear other large guilds are going to move over, which may leave EU1 with a lower "endgame" population.

Havent started playing yet just downloaded it but I played UO for years, Straight PvPer. Greatlakes at first names Baezerk and Italian Stallion then Towndrunk and transfered all over.
The more and more I play this game, the more it reminds me of UO.
This game is UO2, but in 3D. It's brilliant.
