Idiot. People said the same thing about Bush too, and look at what happened there - nothing.
North Americans have become fantastically complacent and the only way there's going to be any civil wars or uprisings is if the elected leaders start rounding people up in the streets and burning them in massive pyres. And maybe not even then.
America in particular...anybody who dissents internally is labelled a blasphemer, a heretic, and a traitor. Your own Civil War set you on that path (but really there were elements of it right after the Revolutionary War; Whiskey Rebellion et al), and the Cold War made it bone-etched. Remember how you treated your country's own Vietnam protestors and be perfectly cognizant of what you have become and what you are. Hell, realize your own inter-party rhetoric. Anybody outside of the orthodoxy is treated like a mad dog that needs to be put down.
Europeans are far more likely to actually fight for their rights than modern North Americans. Hooray for us all, and so much for the "land of the free". Somewhere along the line it was forgotten that all governments become corrupt over time and need to be regularly purged to maintain a semblance of decency, so here we are today. Now the idea of dragging our entire political body out into the streets and garroting them, while amusing, is antithetical; at this point we'd honestly be better off letting the Chinese take over the damned place just so that something decent may grow out of the backlash. Because there won't be any meaningful change any other way.
tl;dr North America in general but US in particular lost the Cold War by becoming the monsters they fought against, not in creed, but rather in deed. Smooth going.

Cuz it was designed horribly. it creates an extremely bi-polar and anti-partisan system that doesn't allow for a moderate solution. and as rivalries grow the proposed solutions get more and more extreme left and right. Bushes policies were pretty far right. and Obama's are pretty far left.

it wasnt.
The original allows for more than one party and we have had more than two parties at a time. But not in the last 100-150 years. As it is now...most people gravitate to either one or the other. The other parties has less financial ability and state elections rules are stacked against 2nd tier parties. Not to mention that they are full of crazies too.

You think getting rid of the electoral college would help? Thats my wife's solution when I mention the US should switch to a parlimentary system, which tends to speak more for the people than a two party system.

How come you only have two major political parties anyway....
1. Money, in ways that are complicated and require a fairly in-depth historical analysis to be understood, gets injected into the Democrat and Republican parties. This was well over a century ago.
2. Using money, the two parties become able to advertise much more efficiently than the others.
3. Having advertised more efficiently while simultaneously having moderate ideas that many will accept (note that this is back then, not necessarily now) they begin to win elections consistently.
4. Having established themselves as the consistent victors, it becomes silly for a given individual to try to vote for anyone else: if you do, your vote is really just going to go to the more evil (in your eyes), instead of the less evil candidate.
The continued belief in #4 is the kicker. God damn game theory and being so damn accurate...
Also, <30% Congress voting rates, probably even <20%. Nuff fucking said.
Cuz it was designed horribly. it creates an extremely bi-polar and anti-partisan system that doesn't allow for a moderate solution. and as rivalries grow the proposed solutions get more and more extreme left and right. Bushes policies were pretty far right. and Obama's are pretty far left.
No. It's more like the two parties are now almost exactly identical, and so there really is no choice except on a handful of issues.

Not really that puts all of the last Pres Candidates on the Right
And Obama is not Right wing, neither is Hillary, on the US Right/Left scale at least
Massive Government is Left, not right, and remember i said at best he is moderate, many of the things he did seemed right, Defense spending and all that, but he also grew government to a huge size
Also i would have to say their is no way to find the true centerpoint on the Left/Right cale, its all subject to opinions

Yeah, but a ton of spending is just being given to corporations. The taxpayer is getting screwed big time, which makes it more right than left. The whole healthcare debate going on? Yeah its just gonna be a handout to insurance and pharma companies, nothing more.
I don't like the guys Obama has around him, Larry Sommers, Emanual, etc... A bunch of corporate lackys, and they have direct access to Obama. Overall I am not impressed with Obama's presidency so far, and to be fair he's only been in office for 6 months, so who knows whats gonna happen in 2-4 years? Better? Worse? I donno.
