Nice, Advarsky. I think you could spend a little more time on the planets in the background though. They do take up a significant part of the focus in the image but the largest one is the least refined part of the picture. I like how the little green moon was shaded in the front. You could try matching the others up with it which needs to be done one way or another anyhow since that shadow on the little green one doesn't quite match the others.

Thanks guys! It took about 10 hours to complete the painting.
geckzilla, thanks for a crit. I see there are mistakes or just mistouches in the piece, but it isn't so crucial. And i'm really finished with this - better move on to the next painting. :)

While I have the chance, I'd like some input on what type of tablet I should buy.
I was thinking about the Bamboo Fun Medium. It's not all that large, when I look at the active space. Does anybody think that will become a problem?

You don't need a big tablet. Unless when you draw you really like big sweeping movements and use your whole arm, you probably aren't going to mind it. My first tablet was nigh postage stamp sized. At some point I had a 9x12 Intuos2 and learned it was way too large for me and traded it for a 6x8 as soon as the Intuos3's came out. So bigger is not always better but it certainly is a personal preference so I can't tell you which you might prefer.
Here is a sketch I did tonight! I got very inspired after looking at some Moran paintings but I don't think it really influenced the outcome much.

Thanks. I just have trouble adding detail into small areas, but it occurred to me that I can magnify the image in Photoshop, anyway.
That's a great painting, by the way, I like the fireflies.

I got the 4x6 bamboo fun and it's fine, I honestly have no trouble with it at all. I would probably have problems with a larger surface.

I bought an Intuos3 4x6 last night from Best Buy. For my desktop, it's the perfect size.

Wow, that's awesome nyustul. Almost want to call bs on the 4th grade thing, that's pretty impressive.
Lethn, the face is showing improvement over your earlier work. I think with the lines you put down for the body, it's too early to point out much of anything, without the volume from details it, it just looks floaty - like a bed sheet. Though it does look like the left side of her body should be moved up a tad bit more.

At Best Buy, the 4x6 Bamboo was $99 and the 4x6 Intuos3 was $199. The salesperson actually knew about both of them fortunately. The Bamboo is great for casual users, it's cheaper obv, but has far less pressure sensitivity. The Intuos3 is meant for professional grade use, with better pressure sensitivity and resolution, and more features/buttons on the pad itself.
If you're serious at all about art, get the Intuos3.

I took a drawing seminar last weekend that concentrated on fundamentals for a good 4 hours.
Start with something simple and then with that you can get more complicated. I guess in this instance, a stick figure, then draw some circles over the frame for volume, then start detailing.
Quick google search that might help you out: http://www.elfwood.com/farp/figure/williamlibodyconstruction.html

I know what you mean with the simple drawing thing, odd thing is though, I've found I actually almost limit myself for some reason when I use that skeleton technique ( I've gotten books on the stuff ) I actually find it easier drawing the basic shape like I have in that picture and then working on the detail with the image in my head.
Bit hard to describe but when I try drawing it in layers like that I feel like I'm having to think about more than I need to and end up doing it well.. Like my previous drawings before the thug character. I've actually found that I've gotten far better results just going ahead and drawing straight from my imagination.
I've actually found just drawing a sillouhette/outline of the character works for me.

I just started with this whole drawing in Photoshop deal, but dealing with layers doesn't seem that hard. It's definitely easier than dealing with paper, paint and color mixtures.
This was the first thing I drew with my new tablet last night for a friend, he wanted to be my first commission off of the Wacom. It's so easy I might not ever want to go back to art on paper. http://www.handoftartarus.com/img/art/vincent.jpg
I basically just sketched a stick figure in gray and then layered over it with detail. You can see some of it still by the hands and shins, light gray.
The point of the technique is not for it to be easy for you, but for the results to look fantastic. From what I learned at that seminar last week, it's how Da Vinci did it, and it's how all the great masters did it.
I'll post this again once I complete it.

thats a pretty fierce wind she's in. My suggestion is to add the hands now. As you know, they are difficult, but when you have an idea of exactly where they will be, the whole drawing will come together.
Another pointer: try to include feet. i have the same problem. i start a drawing and get to the feet and i realize i didn't allocate enough paper.
'course thats the beauty of photoshop; just go to canvas size and add more paper :D

Heh, more people use pencil and traditional art than digital in the world. You just see more of it online. It's a good tool for getting some creativity out. My main reason for going digital is that I have no room for traditional tools. Someday when I get my own house I plan on having an art room I can put smelly paints in. Until then... here is a pic which makes no sense.

art isnt a game or a competition.. so theres no such thing as "cheating"
digital art simply allows for faster working speed.. instead of messing up on a painting and having to go spend £5 on a new canvas... you can simply undo :)

Not bad, he's in lack of a nose, but otherwise it's pretty good, considering there's very little detail added, but I'm inclined to believe that's what the artist was going for.
The wings were especially good.
The sword lacks depth as well, but again, I'm fairly certain that's what the artist was trying to achieve.

But anyway, here's what I've come up with.

Some of the drawings I've been having issues with trying to get the scanner to work properly. And in laziness, Chose not to fight with it very long.
First one is my Most recent drawing. Still working at getting backgrounds right, and the scanner made it worse.
http://fc17.deviantart.com/fs32/f/2008/197/1/6/Overwatch_by_Wolf_Shaman.jpg
Next is a painting I did a couple years ago.
http://fc00.deviantart.com/fs10/i/2006/089/8/b/New_WIP___Wolf_by_Wolf_Shaman.jpg
This one is a Photo I took while I was deployed. This is a PAC-2 Patriot Missile Launcher. This was Launcher 7 out of our 8. Taken while we were doing maintinance on the generator at the front of the platform.
http://fc76.deviantart.com/images/i/2003/48/a/3/Patriot_PAC_2_Launcher_7_Front.jpg
The last one is another photo I took a few years ago at a protest in Portland, Oregon. I decided to put it into a political poster style format. It's fairly rough, but it's the first one that I did in such a manner, and with no Graphic Arts training, I played it by feel.

I´m a total noob at drawing I know nothing about drawing techniques, anatomy, effects etc. Would anyone be able to help me out with some REALLY basic tutorials? links, imags everything is appreciated.
I´m also not sure what program to use. I used Gimp for these pictures since easy to download beeing only 15mb or so. I´m fairly comfortable with Photoshop and there is supposedly a good program called Coral painter X maybe that could be something?

Corel painter is meant to be awesome if you actually want to paint stuff on the computer. A lot of professional artists use it in tandem with photoshop (using photoshop to add effects to the layers etc).
If you can hold of it, I recommend subscribing to "ImagineFX" magazine. It's a really good resource for fantasy and/or CG art, they have tutorials from professional artists and Q&A pages (which are always really helpful) and lots of featured artwork from amateur and professional fantasty/sci-fi artists. Best art magazine I've found.

I´ll be sure to look into that some more. It´s about 62 euro per year which isn´t that bad at all. lots of other magazines costs alot more. If it is as good as you say I´ll probably get a subscription soon.
But for now I´m just looking for really basic stuff which you should be able to find on the internet with a bit of luck I hope. How to configure buttons and so on would also be of great help.

When I got my first tablet, it came w/ Corel Painter essentials, and it's a nifty program. It has some nifty effects with color and texture. Only issue is that the tablet driver keeps corrupting on my computer, so I havent used it in a while. That and my laptop decided to die on me. That was what I used to draw on, since The tablet is not too multi-monitor friendly for my main box.

:D Hey guys! Merry Cristmas all of you! And happy New Year! :D
Here's a painting of mine for this cristmas!
In fact it's an illustration to the "The night before Cristmas" by Nikolai Gogol. (or "Evenings on farm near Dikanka"... dunno if it's true. I know only russian version, "Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки, или ночь перед Рождеством".) It's about evil demonic forces, that crowling in the night before Cristmas and about Ukrainians that celebrate Cristmas and New Year.. =) Very nice novel. I recommend it to all ppl. Gogol is a classic, you know..
Anyway, here it is - i hope you all like it! :ohno:

BlackVolgan,
You obviously have a good handle of composition so how about a friendly challenge? I noticed that the majority of your works catch the eye in a vertical and diagonal fashion. How about you see what you can do with a landscape orientation/horizontal composition that leads the eye from right to left/vice versa? You're quite talented. I'm curious to see what you can do when you shake things up a bit.

The body is great, but the face looks unproportional. The eyes to be more precise, the nose I don't know about, maybe she has a big nose, but the eyes seems odd looking.
Hmm, I think I know what it's causing it to look strange, the left side of the face seems to be in such an angle that you would hardly see the right side of it, wich in turn looks flat.
Or maybe it's just me, otherwise it realy looks great.

Thanks, the face, especially the nose has been giving me some issues. I've tried downsizing it but it still looks too big. She's supposed to be of Asian descent, so hopefully that's what you're seeing with her eyes.

I acctualy figured she was of Asian descent, they still seemed odd. I think again it's because they look um, pasted on, while the rest of the face is in an angle. That, or maybe the left on is just to big.
As for the nose, it might be that it seems a bit long, it seems to be starting in the middle of the forhead for some reason. Maybe if you made the nose more angled towards the face in the upper part of it, it would owrk out... like more pointy.
I have no clue to be honest.

to be honest i think i always seem to go 'vertical' because of the file size dimensions i have always picked to start with in photoshop. I might just try out your challenge though. It shouldn't be too different to what i usually do. i think.

I'm curious as to how you claim I'm at a "basic level".
If you're questioning my anatomy of my self portrait fantasy creation it was made about five years ago- but I still think it was a great piece of art.
I've taken all my art classes and I'm done with college now with a degree in graphic arts so I don't exactly see myself at a basic level, I'm almost insulted- heh. first of all, I don't claim to be a graffic artist or a proffesional illustrator, but i do have private arts classes coming out of my ying yang.
while in middle school and high school i was frequently asked to do art work for both the school and fellow students.
i chose music and martial arts over visual arts as as my arts speacial intrest. i seldom have time to draw anymore, i barley have time to try and finish my CD.
it is my opinion that both yourself, Din and 1mh4rd are still at the beginging stage of artistic developement.
it wasn't untill my early 20's that i could draw what i saw, and not what i knew to be there,(a huge difference). it took maturity of mind and thought to draw a "life like /photographic" rendering of someone/something.
i am not going to bother posting any sketches here, but if you want to see i am not talking out my ass, you can check out some pics at

I agree with you to be honest, but we have to make a separation between art and illustration.
Art can be everything, even the mountain I submitted above, it's art, it's not that realistic but it's art. If you know history of art, you will also now for the many art schools exist, like expressionism and impressionism etc. Now we keep in mind the previews schools, we can think that something can be art and not to represent photo realistic the subject we draw, because in many cases it not what the artist want to show. (the artist may want to give a warm feeling with a painting not a cold picture that represent the reality)
On the other hand we have the illustration, this is not art, this is technique, but it represents the subject you draw photo realistic and right (in measures of anatomy etc) . Most times this form of art have no feeling, it's impressive but it's cold.
So it is sort of hard to say if someone is at basic level, advanced and things like this, to be honest there are not levels in art, only in illustration.
I have to inform you that I don't say all these thinks as a simple fan of art, but as a professional in graphics design. Just in case someone say "and who you are and say that, where you know this..." etc).

no art is good or bad or right or wrong.
with the exception of realism.
which obviously must look real.
one of my favourite paintings is the triumph of death by Pieter Bruegel the elder.

i remember staring at it when i was about 13 and just being in awe of the detail and scope of it.
i showed it to my girlfriend last year and she was like... "its a bit like wheres wally"
whats trash to one person is fantastic to another :P

There is no right or wrong, beautiful or bad looking in art.
The purpose of art is to begin discussions over it's subject and to let the artist give it's message to other people through it's art.
That's why we may see something that we thing it's a piece of shit, but some other people to say it is a masterpiece.

yea, i have to agree with almost all you had to say.
as far as illustrations go, most are cold and emotionless (is that a word?) but check out an artist by the name of louis royo.
i believe everyone would agree that that man is able to express emotion and feeling in his illustrations; thats what i consider talent and what i used to strive for.
but yes, art is anything created by man that can express emotion; whether the viewer feels the same emotion the artist was trying to express or not is besides the point.

yea, i have to agree with almost all you had to say.
as far as illustrations go, most are cold and emotionless (is that a word?) but check out an artist by the name of louis royo.
i believe everyone would agree that that man is able to express emotion and feeling in his illustrations; thats what i consider talent and what i used to strive for.
but yes, art is anything created by man that can express emotion; whether the viewer feels the same emotion the artist was trying to express or not is besides the point.
that's because L.Royo is not illustrating like for example as a graphic designer, like me, do. He just use the technique of illustration to express feelings.
Actually he paints, it just happens to paint with this technique.
To be honest the borders are very hard to be seen, by a way even a cold illustration it is art, so I suggest to just keep enjoying the art in any form we like, and don't try to say "what art is" because we will fall in an endless loop of philosophies like "it is all and nothing" :P

Thank you for the compliment :)
I graphed it out on a normal printer sheet type of paper, then used the same graph ratio on the 18" sheet of black paper that it was drawn on, and then used sight to recreate the lines on the larger sheet as they are on the smaller.
(That easel was used in my HS classrooms... I just so happen to not return mine... lol)
