Which is your motivation for PvPing? Poll options detailed below:

1. PvP to make people mad or upset. Corpse camping, trash talking, and griefing in general. You spit on those you kill. An ideal situation for you would be to upset your opponent to the point that he quits.

2. PvP to be the best. You see yourself as the most skilled PvPer and everyone else as lesser. You PvP simply to show you are better than your opponents. You scoff at those you kill. An ideal situation for you would be to be reknown as one of the greatest PvPers in Darkfall.

3. PvP for the sake of killing. You kill without caring about how it might affect the victim, and you won't waste your time with things like camping. You quickly move on after you've killed an opponent. An ideal situation for you would be simply killing many people as fast as possible.

4. PvP for a good fight. Win or lose, you can enjoy having a good fight agianst an honorable opponent. You bow to those you kill. An ideal situation for you would be that a fight agianst a well-known adversary ends in a suspensful near-draw, with you barely coming out as the victor.

5. PvP to support others. You're not the one doing the damage, but you increase others and keep them alive. An ideal situation for you would be to know that you're support turned the tide of battle into your team's favor.

6. PvP as self-defense. You would rather avoid killing if you could, but will attack if you are provoked. You feel remorse for those you kill. An ideal situation for you would be if you would be left alone to go about your non-PvP-related goals.

However, my method for doing so was to think of which I couldn't play without, or at least which would have the biggest affect on me if it wasn't there.

I'll PvP, simply because I can. I don't have time to go out of my way to grief someone. There will be situations where you have to PvP. If I want something and someone is telling me it belongs to them, I'll kill them then achieve what I want. If someone tries to take my things, I'll kill them.

Wow... To me it's more than little disturbing that out of a list of 7 motivations for PvP, the number #1 reason is not even hinted to...

Namely, PvP for the purpose of acomplishing something! It might be as base as looting your opponent of his gear for financial gain, to capture an important resource or town, or something as complex as inciting a political plot via military action and turning two otherwise friendly factions against eachother. Raiding a merchant caravan. Batteling an enemy clan for dominance over a geographical area. Being contracted by a faction to help in a battle you otherwise wouldn't be involved in. All fine examples of meaningful acomplishment-driven PvP.

For me this witohut a doubt the #1 reason for PvP in a MMORPG environment. Why? Because All of those other 7 motivations can be aimed towards in any game where you can kill other players. Unreal tournament would do fine for an example. PvP for "real" in-game acomplishments is something you can't in other genres. Thats what I'm here for.

Again this helps confirm my suspicions that (sadly) it seems that the majority that have come to this game want only to kill. fighting is not the alpha and omega people! War is fine, but unless there is a reason behind it, then it's has no meaning other than to pass your time...

To answer the OP however, I would say that (after acomplishment-driven PvP), 2,4,5,6 all apply to me depending on the circumstances.

The other thing I feel is disturbing is the fact that about 10% voted that their motivation is to make life miserable for other players... why? Isn't deriving pleasure from the pain of others the very definition of a sadist? I truly hope this is a case of people voting option 1 because they think it makes them cool somehow. Otherwise we truly have a lot of truly sick people here on the forum... (well more than anticipated that is =P ).

Secondly, another 10 is here just to kill for the sake of killing... Why play a MMORPG then I have to ask? (and this is not a rethorical question, I am honestly curious). Why play a complex and involving game if your objective is to repeat one tiny little aspect of it again and again and again, and ignore the rest? Why not play one of the thousand other games, single and multiplayer, that are designed for the very purpose of mindlessly killing over and over? It would seem the natural choice to me atleast.

I think it's a bit of everything. PVP is one of those elements you don't know how it's going to end, you have to anticipate how the other player responds to your actions. Therefor being able to beat a good pvp-er the feeling usually is better than gank a noobie. And ofcourse it's fun to see people yell at you in childish way. I am not much of a true PvPer. I don't play the game simply to PvP, I play to enjoy the game, PvP is part of that experience. It's an entirely different level of enjoyment. Actually getting an adrenaline rush is what I miss. Getting in a fight, or being ambushed, and running away half dead and actually getting away from real human beings chasing you is so much more fun then knowing it's a coded A.I. you're trying to get away from. Or knowing around any corner there could be a guy whose out to rob people.

All that said, if items are really as worthless as they're made out to be, it just wont seem as enjoyable. But hey, it's open looting, and PvP! A lot more then any other game is offering!

I am an Anti, while I have great respect for real rPK's who kill others for personal gain, to prove themselves, or for the challenge I absolutly abhore the psuedo killers that are afraid to fight anyone who could pose a threat and only hang out at the local graveyard. You wannabe reds know who you are, your the type that ONLY fights the weak and run whenever a blue fihgts back. This is why I fight.

P.S. I know that the majority of reds prefer to hunt players out farming for mass gold, or kill hated enemies and only go to the newb areas from time to time out of shear boredom. I'm definately the kind of guy who would rather be known as the #1 healer on the server than the most notorious pvper. If my heals/buffs/cc save someone and they are decent enough to say "thanks" I'm a happy camper.

planetside was the my first game and all the emenies where players. i played it for 2 years and tried WoW. i didn't notice a real dreaitic change (probebly cause i was doing the same thing in wow that i did in planetside which was to kill stuff, there just wasn't a computer behind the thing that i was killing this time) then i grew borde and revered back to planetside (i have made my peace with the BFRs) and i am eager to try darkfall, namey because it has a lot to do with planetside. I like treasure. In UO I loved my house and had it decorated and crap. I liked being prepared for when my guild needed me, having like 50 bags with a katana, hally, 50 of each reg, a recall scroll, a rune to my house, trinsic, and our guild house and an empty bag for loot so it doesn't clutter my main bag. Then of course I had a complete wardrobe of different outfits already pre-dyed and stuff for whenever I felt like dressing up for some event. To get this stuff, I killed people for it or sold their stuff to buy what I want. It's more exciting to get loot by killing other players than crafting or killing mobs as the risk and rewards are far greater.

I love a good fight with a good player. Unforunately my only PvP experience was....WOW,and being a rogue I had very few 'good duels' that didnt involve being over in 5 seconds and my corpse on the floor.

WARNING! Long WOW monologue ahead!

But every time I was engaged in these duels,it was much fun. Duels in WOW don't pop up casually,at least not good ones. Usually someone wins fast because they'll have better gear,or they are never alone for long.

Now,when I wasn't engaged in killing people in duels/group situations,I also liked to 'grief' people,but not always in the boring standard way.
Sometimes I would kill low-levels when they were busy fighting mobs,or in other annoying situations (and then it's 3(LocalDefense): HORDE PK! ROGUE! AT MINE!),but sometimes I was a very very creative.
I killed boss quest mobs in Stonewatch Hold while they were fighting the group,even with high-levels present.
I'd pursue low-levels with my 200-300 arrows,just to watch them run away from me into the nearest guard keep) knowing I could have easily killed them.

And other times,I was randomly stupid.
Remember the Eranikus trinket (boss quest reward) that emitted a green gas cloud around you? Although highly seen as 'crap',I made full use of that trinket and it's 15-min cooldown.
In AV battl....whoops,AV grindfests I would make it my very silly mission to try and 'gas' as many people with that trinket as possible. :D (you'd be surprised by the way how long it takes a meaty Alliance group to fully react to a rogue popping up from nowhere in the middle of their ranks) Although paladins usually spammed Cleanse,I loved it. :D
I tried to make the most of WOW's limited PvP environment,and I made it fun....for a while. Then I ran out of ideas.

Now hopefully in Darkfall's FFA PvP environment,I'm gonna be doing more randomly stupid PK'ing,which is fun for me. I like to think 'outside the box' when it comes to PvP and try to do things that normally people don't think to do.

I pvp for a reason: RP, tournament, self defence.
I'm not a PvPer and in general I'd prefer to kill monsters, adventure and explore, but that doesnt mean I intend to shy away from PvP.

I prefer a good fight to a cheap or easy kill, or a battle. What I like about pvp zonesi n some other games is that it makes a battle easily arranged, but I also like the old UO style where you can fight anywhere.

I don't like griefers or greifing tactics/cheap kills. (Like teaming up with someone, working your way thru a dungeon with them, then killing htem at the end and taking everything that you were sharing out, as well as their valuable stuff)

We have always killed for bigger reasons than loot or entertainment :)

If we do choose to play as Dragonbound Ork/Mahirim We will kill for the Dragon, we will kill anyone of anything that stands in the way of the dragons return.

That will involve killing any and all humans/ elves/ dorfs/ alfar etc etc

We kill for God its a classic excuse and a timely one at that :)

Generally I prefer pvp to accomplish in-game/lore objectives: defend a city, capture resources, claim a bounty, faction hostilities, etc. My other motivation would be for a good fight, where a "good" fight is one where at the start, even half way through, neither side is sure (massive egos aside) who is going to win. My past experience is those sorts of fights are kinda rare in mmorpg pvp though - so many people only start fights they *know* they'll win - so I usually just play an fps or similar for my fix there.

pretty much for options of the poll except option 2 which I believe is impossible to reach.
If there's a guy/clan I really can't stand, I'd go for the kill even if I wouldn't attack him if I didn't knew him.
I also like killing other people and taking their stuff, ect. If someone is afk I I notice that while attacking him, I won't back off (be honest - who of you would?).
A good fight is probably my main-reason to PvP and so that's what I voted for. I just love beating my opponent and later thinking: "Omg, how did I win this incredible fight? This guy was damn good" (there's a little of option 2 inside). I dislike beeing killed anyway - the better the fight was, the more I hate losing it.
If friends/Clanmembers need help, you'll find me helping them always and if I get attacked... that's pretty obvious I will of course strike back.

#7 other - I'll PvP for the excitement and shear fear of trying not to die and lose all of my armor and reagents, and what feels like Christmas morning when I open up my enemies corpse to find my reward. Even if its only a rusty old battle axe. In WoW (yes, I played it, what else was there to do) a friend of mine and I (mage and warlock) caught an alliance mage next to a horde town in the water trying to get some item. We spent 20 minutes using fear and sheep trying to drown him. After about 5 mins we figured it wasn't going to work because sheep/fear must have been reseting his breathing timer. So we did it for another 15 minutes anyway, cause it was fun. When we were done, we killed him and went on our way.

We were like a cat with a mouse, we played with it, tortured it, let it go, grabbed it, tortured it some more until we got bored so we killed it. :lmao:

Unfortunately this is about the only memorable experience from WoW. :P

Wow... To me it's more than little disturbing that out of a list of 7 motivations for PvP, the number #1 reason is not even hinted to...

Namely, PvP for the purpose of acomplishing something! It might be as base as looting your opponent of his gear for financial gain, to capture an important resource or town, or something as complex as inciting a political plot via military action and turning two otherwise friendly factions against eachother. Raiding a merchant caravan. Batteling an enemy clan for dominance over a geographical area. Being contracted by a faction to help in a battle you otherwise wouldn't be involved in. All fine examples of meaningful acomplishment-driven PvP.

For me this witohut a doubt the #1 reason for PvP in a MMORPG environment. Why? Because All of those other 7 motivations can be aimed towards in any game where you can kill other players. Unreal tournament would do fine for an example. PvP for "real" in-game acomplishments is something you can't in other genres. Thats what I'm here for.

Again this helps confirm my suspicions that (sadly) it seems that the majority that have come to this game want only to kill. fighting is not the alpha and omega people! War is fine, but unless there is a reason behind it, then it's has no meaning other than to pass your time...

To answer the OP however, I would say that (after acomplishment-driven PvP), 2,4,5,6 all apply to me depending on the circumstances.

The other thing I feel is disturbing is the fact that about 10% voted that their motivation is to make life miserable for other players... why? Isn't deriving pleasure from the pain of others the very definition of a sadist? I truly hope this is a case of people voting option 1 because they think it makes them cool somehow. Otherwise we truly have a lot of truly sick people here on the forum... (well more than anticipated that is =P ).

Secondly, another 10 is here just to kill for the sake of killing... Why play a MMORPG then I have to ask? (and this is not a rethorical question, I am honestly curious). Why play a complex and involving game if your objective is to repeat one tiny little aspect of it again and again and again, and ignore the rest? Why not play one of the thousand other games, single and multiplayer, that are designed for the very purpose of mindlessly killing over and over? It would seem the natural choice to me atleast.
