So I decided to get started in DnD, though I'm having a little bit of trouble. I can't decide whether to use 3.5 or 4.0 edition. I see good things in both, 3.5 because of the massive custom options to make any character I want, pretty much, and 4.0 has a simpler rule system.
So I come to Forumfall, where the....most informative advice is given. So, which should I choose?

You should abandon the idea, go buy some condoms, and go to a bar.

You reap what you sow, I suppose.

Are you planning to play online? Or find a group in real life? I'm trying to start playing 4e online. I've been thinking of starting my own gaming group to do it, since I've had very bad luck finding a good group to game with over the internet.

Are we talking the subscription thing through DnDinsider? Or like a chatroom kinda thing. In all honesty, I'd be good online, perhaps even better since it wouldn't require a whole load of preperation.

Chatroom. Probably look for an IRC that has a dice rolling function or something... Or there's some free programs out there that are pretty kool (that's what I've heard anyways). I'm not sure how we'd do it. It's only me and my friend so far. We both have no experience with DnD, and I was planning to be the DM (I'd rather not though, since I don't think I'd be a very good one, but someone needed to be it =P)

I've been reading over the 4e books pretty thouroughly, and it seems pretty simple, except that it almost requires you to use minis. Unless you disregard the push, pull, whatever rules.

I haven't even looked at the handbook or anything yet. I downloaded a crap load of 4e PDF's yesterday. If you think 3.5e would be better/more fun I could get the 3.5e books. I'm up for either one.

Problem with 3.5 is that there are so many of them that you spend more time reading them, and looking up rules, instead of actually playing. But there are more overall options
I'd personally go with 4e, use the free character builder to make the first character, then play. I did manage to make an interesting sorcerer who uses a bastard sword.
I'm a 2.0 guy(Low Armor-Class is a GOOD thing), but I say go with 4.0. My favorite rule system was Shadowrun, which by far has the simplest ruleset and fewest die-rolls.

I've been toying with it, making different characters and such. Has all the stuff from the basic books, including PHB 2, and I believe Martial Power. Can't go beyond level 3 if you haven't subscribed to dndinsider though/.

I suppose you could play DnD without the dice-rolls. Would kinda be like a forum role-play though, which is fun over at the Elder Scrolls forums.
