Instead of harvesting number of said items, why not make it a weight - same with the casting with a reagent.

Would go something like this

I go out to mine some ore, I start picking away and instead of FAILING, I only get a little bit of ore, lets say a few oz. I pick again, and this time i get alot more, maybe a pound or so, and I also get an oz or two of sulfur. Each node would have a limited number of pounds, but instead of failing outright, you would only get a limited amount of ore, or reagent. Same with trees - you cant tell me that after i hit something with an object meant to extract whatever it is im trying to get out for at least 6 solid seconds that I didn't do anything and completely failed. Sometimes i get more, sometimes i get less. Of course for smelting, it takes x lbs of ore to make one ingot, and if i fail i loose x amount of lbs or oz.

When casting a spell, it should also be a weight base system. To cast fireball, say it takes 2 oz of sulphur - say I want it to be a BIG fireball, I up that in a skill system to 6 oz of sulphur, so it makes a bigger boom - or just keep it the same.

just a thought of how to make something a bit better, and more logical
