Natural Selection was an Half-Life 1 mod that combined both the FPS and RTS genres. If you haven't played it, the short version is that NS was a very fast paced FPS with incredible emphasis on teamwork. For the engine it ran on, it looked amazing and the teams (marines vs. aliens) were different in both their structure, as they both gathered and used resources differently, and their playstyle as one was ranged and the other melee.
The sequel, Natural Selection 2 (http://www.naturalselection2.com/), has been in development and they've just released a teaser along (http://kotaku.com/5271215/unknown-worlds-triumphantly-teases-natural-selection-2?skyline=true&s=x) while opening up pre-orders. I know a good portion of you guys have played NS1, so I figured some of you may be interested in knowing. I've been following NS2 for a long while, and they've made some pretty profound gameplay changes. Hopefully it's as good as NS1.
Also, the beta is scheduled to release this summer with the retail game releasing this fall.

O
This is news to me. I knew of the natural selection mod, but a natural selection 2?

The first one was fucking awesome and gets the official Paganini seal of approval. Hopefully NS2 is the game that I can waste my summer on.

Looks good but its been in development for almost as long as darkfall was... Imo it isn't worth a full standalone price they set it out for, and after what NS1 turned into (fps deathmatchfest without the strategy) I dunno.
16 players though, ouch.

Fucking loved the original. Was different from everything else I was playing at the time. Gonna check part 2 out now but I assume it won't have the same impact as the original because I have since played other games like it.
Ok watched the teaser and it was useless. I guess it is going to be awhile to see some game play.
OP since you are watching the game closely let us know when we can sign up for beta.

Source was actually too limiting of an engine for them. One of their developers had been making an engine on the side for many years and when they were unable to do something they wanted to do in Source, they would do it in this other engine. Eventually, they realized they could work much faster and make a better game without Source.

I'll bump this thread when the beta goes live. As for playing other games like it, that's probably true. Some of the changes they've made will hopefully provide some direction in public games. For example, the marines have a "power grid" structure where nodes are essentially linked to each other. If one node goes at the beginning gets destroyed, the others will 'lose power' and stop working. It's a way to try to create a more clear front line, and I hope it doesn't suck. There's now an alien commander, which just sounds wrong to me, and marines can buy their own weapons, a change I like but a change that further blurs the line between what made the two sides different.

"two teams of up to 16 players" = 32 players. Nice reading comprehension.
