The free ones are listed as free. I played Core 2025 (http://www.mudconnect.com/mud-bin/simple_search.cgi?Mode=MUD&mud=Core), and am currently doing Shadows of Isildur(A tolkien-mud that lets you play orks, skill based, perma-death). There was also a REALLY good one called Accursed Lands (http://www.mudconnect.com/mud-bin/adv_search.cgi?Mode=MUD&mud=Accursed+Lands), skill-based, classless, crafting system, perma-death.
Both Accursed Lands and Shadows of Isildur are kinda similar, except AL has a wicked huge world map.

I always enjoyed Realms of the Dragon (http://www.rod.org) the most of all the MUDs I've tried.
