View Full Version : Ray Spells
I'm an earth mage and am thinking about getting impale because it uses sulfur, but I've heard some bad things about it. Have ray spells been tweaked at all, or are they still pretty useless? And do the damage ones such as impale at least increase earth magic quickly? Any info from someone with experience on this would be appreciated.

Well, I've got Frostbite at about 15 at the moment - goes through walls, so it's nice for hitting the idiots hiding right around trees and trying to force you into melee. The range isn't all that great though.
Nice to know. How about accuracy? Some say it's really hard to hit with even in range.

Impale is Sulfur + Bone.
Trade your bone for ash, and your sulfur for resin. You'll level much faster on Brawn.
Yeah, it's just rare to find people who will trade those reagents directly - usually I have to sell the stuff first and then buy them, which takes a lot of time. Also, I believe impale is 2 sulfur, but that's irrelevant. So in essence, impale is not a useful spell?

I love frostbite as well. Rays are the only ones that actually hit where your cursor is right when you release it. I guess the shorter range is the tradeoff. If we could get long range ray type nukes (shock rifle) it would be just sick.

Thats interesting cause I am actually having more trouble aiming the line effects than the bolts...specially on moving targets. Any pointers?

I've found with the ray target if you see the person's name on hover, you can release. I've tried leading the target and that doesn't seem to work. It's too instant for leading targets. But yeah, tough for me too. Half the time right as I release, the person just happens to bolt off to the left or right. Arg!

It takes practice to get used to aiming the ray spells. I have Impale and couldn't hit anything with it when I got it. I can hit with it now.
How about the damage? I hear that it does no extra damage to the back and can't be parried, but is the front damage at least decent?

This is probably opposite of what they intended.

Not sure, if Impale is difffernt than frostbite but frost seems to hit the X no matter what. I'm if jumping spinning and twitch aim to a moving target, if I release right on them it hits. Maybe it's effected by latency a lot, I notice the little animation that signifys a hit is delayed a bit. forstbite also definitely does more to back, at level 10 with rank 0 staff it does 26ish to front and 38ish to back.

ray spells are ur close range weapons when u have friends in melee with enemy
u canot use ur aoe nukes because u would hit friends
but with ray spells and good aim u hit only the enemy
for a full mage template u need them
as a hybrid u can just go melee urself and dont need them

Most importantly - they pierce through block. This might not seem as big advantage but in team battles it is!

What is fun is that it is really dependent on the person. Some say they are awesome because they fit in they play style while other hate them and never use them.
I don't already have any of these ray spells, but i always figured they would be good melee defenses for full mages without weapon skills.
As I try to play as one of these no melee type, i am often rushed by several ennemies at once in melee with no means to retaliate except by hurting myself. with the aoe or missing my oponents.
Maybe the cooldown o nthose spell is to high to really serve this purpose.
By moving sideways and releasing the spell when you have them aligned, I supose you could hit all your enemies at melee range.
Has anyone tried these spells in such manner ?
Any more feedback ?
