So I didn't start playing at launch, so I am way behind the curve (Beta testers get no love IMO.) and want to pick what elemental magics I should do. I was thinking of doing Fire (High dmg, low AOE so nobody will yell at me on vent for hitting them, and if they do they will be dead anyway.) and Air, for its anti armor stuff, and anti archer/archer support stuff. I think the combo would work well in general especially as a full mage on a ship (I get to burn their ship, get large AOEs on em, and generally wreak havoc.

Does this sound like a decent setup (Skill/gold intensive yes.) for a full mage in my situation?

Yes it is.
Although it takes a whole lot more before its actualy viable.

The arrow protection buff(air) gives +1.0 arrow protection i believe and lasts a decent amount of time.
I think fire only would be good enough for you untill you got it cloe to maxed out. Getting air for support is kinda waste atm.s

And if there is anything you need to get it is the fire mana effecientcy skill.
Because without that at a decent level your screwed for being out of mana to fast.

Indeed, magic in beta was rather tiresome to get...

I was thinking of getting air for more of the anti plate/AEOs of doom. Fire for not hitting a ton of targets but wailing on one. Plus, Come Hither (Is it still in?) would be awesome. *Pulls off boat.*

So as the one person who has actually responded in a meaningful way, what do you suggest/do my motives sound sane?

P.S the Arrow buff sounds good, and I am worried about mana... Can't drain stam for it, nor health. Unless I micromanage the crap out of it.

Come hither is pretty useless because the range of it is bad.
Im not sure about the air AOE because i dont have them yet, im at 50air now and mostly got it for the (de)buffs for archery.

Ligntning bold has no AOE but fires a ray forward wich hurst everyone in it. Only downside is the range is short and the cooldow, it maybe reaches 10yards before you are already unable to hit people.
It can hit through walls and stuff though wich is usefull sometimes but wouldnt realy bother.

(De)buffs others are actualy alright but they only work for 20seconds wich is a shame.
If they lasted a minute at level1 and 2minutes at level 25 it would have been a great spell but unfortunately they dont last that long.

at no manaeffecientcy they take 20-30 mana for the buffs.
The attack spells take around 18mana.

Guiding wind (debuff arrow protect) takes ~13 mana
arrow ward (buffother arrow protect) takes ~18 mana
[both lasts like 20 seconds, and take 50 air]

Arrow shield (buffself arrow prot) takes ~29mana
Agility (buffself dextery) takes ~29 mana
[Both lasts a decent amount of time, few minutes and require level 1 air]

Ligning bolt and ball of lightning both take ~18mana.

Ah, so pretty much, air is not so great? If the Air AOE was good then that would totally make it worth IMO. Anybody have it who can give me a reasonable assessment of how strong/good it is?

If I were you I would try and find some meaning in replies that may disagree with your current outlook. You should level up melee and archery before starting magery.

Anyone know how effective Guiding Wind is? How much protection does it drop?
For instance, if I hit a player in full plate with it, will my archer friends be able to pwninate him? Or will it just add like .2 dmg to their attacks whereas I could have fireballed him instead for some actual damage.

Maybe if those people had disagreed with him constructively instead of just saying being full mage sucks. Then i could agree with you, but you seem to be one of those too. It's really all about the persons play style... yes you are going to be poor starting out going pure mage. Unless you want to farm for reagents I'd suggest picking up a melee weapon for when you are out of your reagents so you're never totally useless. If you are going to be using magic in pvp and pve and farming pve for reagents with melee/magic I would go with daggers in all honesty they seem to do the highest dps for pve. PVP they are rather worthless and need a buff.

It would be better just to dmg him. The dmg boost it gives is minor in comparison to your elemental single target dmg spell.

Lowers arrow protection with 4-5.
Wich is 4-5 increase of archery damage if im not mistaken, it lasts 20seconds in wich you could shoot about 10arrows if you have decent archery and dont wait with shooting.

In solo it could be usefull as first hit but once he noticed you it will be useless, in group combat it actualy works decent though because you will have multiple people getting the extra damage.
