New DF Interview up over on MMORPG.com

You can find it here (http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?gameId=4&setView=features&loadFeature=408&fp=1600,1200,758835125,20060126181318). :)

Indeed, there is one quote from the article that shines like a shiny diamond:

Our main defining features today are pretty much exactly as we first envisioned the game on the conceptual stages. We have stayed true to the initial design, and only minor features have been cut, for various technical and balancing reasons. That said, we have added a lot more new features.

[quote]Consider what potentially tide-turning magical weapons are worth to a besieged clan - who stand to lose their clanstone and everything they've worked for - and you'll realise the worth of craftsmen in a war-torn setting such as Agon. Darkfall is a combat oriented game, and there will never be a shortage of recently slain players who need to have their equipment replaced. As a result, master crafters will be highly sought after, both as clan members and as trading partners.

Crafting in Darkfall involves more than just toiling at the anvil or workbench. In order to create an item, you must first procure the required raw materials, and this can be much more complicated than just strolling down to the local mine with a pickaxe over your shoulder. If you want to create magical items, for example, you'll first need to obtain special ingredients which are only dropped by different kinds of monsters. Some of these resource monsters are hard to kill, others are rare, while yet others live in dangerous and/or enemy-controlled habitats. Even the more prosaic resources, such as iron and wood, must be harvested from a limited number of resource points, which can be brought under a restricting clan's control.

The crafting system is designed this way in order to encourage conflict, cooperation and trade between players. Here are just some of the things we hope to see players engaged in, as a result of incentives inherent in Darkfall

Yea this is better graphics than WoW. WoW just looks better cause its cartoonish. Whenever a game tries to go for a more "real" look its going to seem worse than a cartoonish look. I'm an avid WoW player but as far as graphics go these games I'd bet are on par as far as graphics go. As far as everything else goes its gonna be a shitload better if they stick to their guns and do what they promise to do :D

Nevr

The spawns are dynamic. Having "control" over an area doesn't have to mean permanent.

Say, the goblins are in the forest at X. A clan finds them and sets up a camp there with a perimeter and battles anyone who tries to come in. Once they kill these goblins, they don't appear there anymore, they appear at Y. So the clan starts off to Y, but they may not ever find Y, or another clan may be there, etc., but they can still control the spawn with enough effort and time.

Obviously, there are some timing and balance issues there, as with anything else. Let's just hope they get them right.

ahh that quenched my thirst quite well. im a fan of the many different options regarding clothing. im not sold on the burning of towns etc yet though... guess ill have to wait and test really but i would have thought the best option would be to be able to burn it to the ground within say a day or 2. rebuilding would need to be very cheap but maintaining would be costly.. does that make sense? its would be a pain in the ass to loose your town but not 'omfg im going to quit, this game sucks'.

Well, now that I`ve got slightly more time to write a comment ;

The first thing I`d like to voice in on is the ingame screenshots following this interview. Hands down I like the graphics. Its both bright and crystal sharp to watch. It seems like all the blur people reacted to in previous shots are absolutely gone in this version/with these settings.

The horses are beautiful and suit the description of Battlehorses. I keep seing people complaining about them having too large hooves, but if they`d bother to do some research, they`d find out that we do have large horses in real life too - if they`d look further, they would also find out about what breeds were used as the typical horse worthy of taking to battle. The horses involved in these pictures all pretty much look the same (maybe they are the same) and I hope that even though these are the type "Battlehorse" I hope they still can come in different colors and so forth. I`m also very interested in finding out how these horses(live animals) respond in terms of control and such. Do they sidestep and react just as sharp as a playercharacter would or are they given some more lively attributes to indicate that we are indeed in control of an animal when we are riding our mounts.

I like that the name of the players involved here doesn`t show up on all the pictures. This probably indicates that we are required to target them (crosshairs), or at least have them within closer vincinity to `recognize` them. (yes I`m referring to the name tags).

Further, In many games - including the new Elder Scrolls game, they are not including longer weaponry, ranged if you will, like spears and halberds - and in one of the pictures I can see one of the riders holding something very similar to a spear, which made me smile - I hope these spears are given their appropriate range both on foot and on mounts, as thats the main motivation to invent spears in the first place.

I do like how this interview is written. It definitely makes me feel they`re confident about their product and could I almost sense a little bragging involved ? Well, this game definitely looks playable, and the graphics looks both functional and beautiful. Functional as in optimized and light, yet capable of nice effects, animations and so forth. Like the developers said, pictures rarely do a game justice, and sometimes it could even be the other way around if devs or artists have made alterations to pictures to make them look better for promotional purposes. The armor Tasos is wearing seems to have nice reflections according to where the lightsource is, which is nice to watch. Of course everything could look more "Real", but thats not at all the purpose here in my opinion the path you`ve taken with the graphics both indicates that the game is by far not looking "old", and you`re attempting to make a fun -game- not some medieval simulator. Would the water we see reflect and interact with the riders if they decided to suddenly splash into it I wonder.

I also love the range we can view in the distance - I`m sure we`ll be able to set this distance manually according to our computers and connections, I like how it fades into a almost fogness state instead of just getting "cut" right off like in other games I`ve played.

You write a lot about Pvp`ers and that their needs to pvp will be met in DF. You`re also including the importance of crafters, and hopefully by that you don`t only mean the crafters of weaponry, war-equipment and such - but also the non-pvp related crafters, like farmers, carpenters, herbalists, chefs, alchemists, woodcutters, rock miners etc etc. Professions I -hope- will be given emphasis in the game. If these are not given some level of importance, the professions will not be respected ways to go about playing in a world like the Agon you are creating. I`m sure you aren`t looking for "Non-stop" PvP as in some round-based Pvp games like Quake and so forth. I`d love for there to be some mindless killing, but I`m all for the killing with a purpose and reason thing, that involves planning, diplomacy and so forth. I mean, will individual players, say a farmer stand a chance at all in this game, would he be able to settle down in his farm and produce grain for example, or cows (like we`ve seen in some earlier pictures) for meat and milk ? Would the foodstuff be of importance to the pvp crowd ? Would they get temporary statboosts , thus making the role of the farmer a quite important and respected one even though he does not wield a sword into battle every day ?

Ah, theres much I`d like to comment on, but for now I`m simply just too pleased with the goings on and I wish our developers further good luck in the development.

It makes me wonder if they go for such a minimalistic ui so people can make their own, stay with this, wait till the last moment to add a more arty one or just use it to show more of the scenery in the screens...

The brown grey water is the best. You can even see through it slighty on one of the islands in the river/moat. I like the way it pretty wavey too.

The fact you can see through it means the water has a bottom and depth which bodes well for the ship parts of the game.

Curiously tasos never gets fatigued (though he takes alot of hit points). you would think his stamina bar would fall after a stroke with his sword.

ive been saying it for 4 years... DARKFALL is going to be like UO.. a virgin ripping.... UO gave us freedom and MMO. Darkfall will give us 3d freedom.. it will be a virgin ripping like uo once again, you can never forget your first. and darkfall will offer something nothing else can even compare to. I.... we will never want to play another game.. like uo and its vets talking about the old days.. in 10 years.. we will be doing the same for darkfall..

Ive been selling this game to my friends, family, co workers for years now.. and with these screen shots.. they cant tell its not going to own..

I bet other game developpers are going omg.. we are morons. for not doing waht communitys have assked for.. now darkfall is in full force.. nothing can spot it.

Well, after seeing the 3rd person view in the screen shots from the 26, I kinda like the perspective. First person was generally so tight as to give me a sense of tunnel vision. You tend to lose natural peripheral vision, which 3rd person in most games emulates. If release is the same as those screen shoots, looks good to me. The level of detail in the graphics was higher than I expected aswell. If those are generated from the engine same as a retail version, looks good. I would like to know the graphics specs of the machine used to generate them. Interviewer said it was

Definately worth posting. Not for the exsisting fans but for the still many vaporware nay-sayers who don't think the game is going ahead. Also as we enter 2006 there are going to be lots of new MMOs, probably not better but still enough to turn heads and gain waiting devotion from new comers. As the market continues to split, so will the player bases. Attention will be so divided that customers won't know which way to turn. And with the worldsize we are dealing with, Darkfall will need all the subcribers it can get for population to further drive popularity.

The one that will do job is the pre-beta video. That should be when the game shows it's true colours, and people start jumping on the band wagon.

Great Interview btw, love the honest down to earth answers and addressing of common MMO flaws. Also bumping up the PvP awareness, should go down well with the vets.
I used one of the shots (with the four horsemen) as my desktop. 1024x768, thanks very much. :D

My only concern is the possiblity for large, meaningless landscapes between points of interest. I hope there is a variety of obstacles scattered around, often densely, for pvp tactical use. The pics in interview may show a more barren area, with sparse trees, but I hope other areas have more obstacles.

Man crafting shit is gonna be a major pain in the ass. First you gotta trek all over this massive world lookin for shit. Remember how big of a pain in the ass that was in shadow bane? You had to go all over lookin for runes, then you basically needed an army to control any of the good mines to get the resources you need. Now with all kinds a rare shit and all the People you gotta smoke to get some resources in darkfall you better be able to craft some really really awsome Items that really give you a major advantage if you gotta go through all of that garbage lol.

I don't wanna craft all this shit and spend day gettin the resources only too have some little kid named IpWnsNoObS and his rag tag bunch of Midgets come stomp my ass and take all that shit without much problem.

I better have some Total asskickin sword that decapitates 50 people at once so blood sprays everywhere if i gonna spend all day crafting items and goin on tresure hunts for Mythril, Obsidian, Ebony,Plutonium, or whatever.

Wow, that's a whole lotta shit. :p
But you know they've gotta make crafters do some work, otherwise it would just be the same old 'bent over an anvil all day, with the odd trip to the bazaar for materials'
And like they said, crafters are essential to fighters, perhaps even as much as healers. It's hard to image it actually being worthwhile to go through the effort of finding ingreedients because for most games crafters are in many ways useless when drops are the dominating source of armament.
In the end they will (or should) earn more money than any fighter ever will.

On a different note, can you actually beleive people are still saying this game is vapourware? I mean talk about head up your arse, for christs sake.
If anyone here posts on MMORPG.com and knows the details of the whole Adventurine>Razorwax deal, could you please set tsr57 right so he will stop being a trolling dickhead. I swear to god he keeps posting in each new topic on the Darkfall boards no matter how many times I tell him to fuck off. He just yacked on about how Adventurine and Razorwax being one in the same means the whole thing is a hoax with domain registry details & all. I know he's being a complete retard but I don't know the entire story myself, only that they've merged and now fall under the name Adventurine.
If someone could give him the facts and point out his unbridled idiocy to the world it would certainly make my day, thanks. :D

For those who are complaining about the graphics, you have obviously never played FPS. If you have played FPS then you have never owned a server day after day. Everything must be SMOOTH!! In FPS you miss and you die!

On a different note, can you actually beleive people are still saying this game is vapourware? I mean talk about head up your arse, for christs sake.

The cries of vaporware may be a bit extreme, but so (In my opinion) are the unbridled cires of fanbois throughout this thread. A healthy level of skepticisism is a good thing. For example, while I have every belief that this game is real, I do have serious concerns as to whether or not they'll be able to produce the necessary and inevitable patches this game is going to need. This isn't to say the Devs are incompetant, but rather an acknowledgment that every MMO ever made, or ever to be made, will need to be patched with both major and minor fixes.

Obviously the production cycle has taken much longer than they could have expected, but include the recent revelation that they are also doing defense work and I think it raises a level of concern as to their ability to keep things moving in a timely fashion.

Sitting here on the outside, one can only speculate as to what is or isn't a problem in their development cycle. I do honestly believe that without intimate knowledge of what's going on in the Adventurine offices you pretty much have to defer to the developers and take their comments on their word, but as things progress and play testing begins don't forget the value of critical thinking.

Can someone define in simple English what it means to be in the final stages of development?

That means that they have only 50 more years untill they announce the official release date

But seriously dont get your hopes up that this game is gonna be available to play any time soon. If there is no official release date or even an official BETA date then that means we still have quite a while. There hasn't even been official preview videos. There is going to have to be a whole massive marketing and hype for atleast a few months before the game is officially released. I assume that beta testing will start some time this year but the official release probly won't happen till next year. If the game was released this year I would be very surprised.

While you are waiting just try to keep yourself occupied there are some good fantasy games being released soon such as Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion. Not an MMORPG but still an amasing looking game. They did some pretty advanced stuff with that game and the combat system and leveling system are similar to darkfall. It might be good for twitch training for a fantasy FPS. No PvP whatsoever I'm affraid.

Well browsing the net I seemed to have found some old ac2 friends , Yes this is the original IRONWOLF.

Lets clarify a post i was reading regarding the formation of FPdoMs.

3 groups where formed after IRONWOLF disbanded you where one if them.

But those where the days. IRONWOLF vs Stonecutter. The rise to power the two of us smaller guilds went through. We had only about 30 members at the time battling with the big doggs.

The time I squared off with stonecutter after he became powerful and started taking over certian areas . The fight at the bridge. wow !

AC2 Was one of the best times I personally have had running a guild. 200+

Making the pact with TAO. All the pvp battles and the unbelievable feel of bringing people together for one common goal ... to get respect.

So to whoever posted that comment about IRONWOLF as a person and as a guild leader you are very very mistaken.

So to all my old friends and enemies .... HAIL !!! ac2 was great .

Interview over-glorified the game (of course).

A highlight of this very gratifying experience was a head bouncing to the ground (and rolling into the moat that surrounds the city) after a well timed sword blow as I rode by.

Doubtful the entire combat experience will be as this suggests. Latency requirements simply makes this degree of "timing" impossible.

Spell explosions blow you away from the battle line with kinetic force; blood splatters on your armor as the ditch-bound head of a decapitated foe rolls past; smoke from fireball bursts reduce vision temporarily until the wind carries it away; warhorses kick savagely and opponents physically block your progress as you race to execute a wound-stunned enemy before their healers get to him; thundering hooves signal victory as your cavalry arrives just in time to turn the tide of battle.

Sentence one translaion: Warriors are gonna be pissed off. Sentence three translation: big battlefields are a haze of single slices of brown. Sentence four translation: faulty collision detection + latency = bouncing like a marble in a jar.

Also doubtful that they have implemented their server "ideas" properly. I'd be surprised if it wasn't like shadowbane during first 6 months.

Fans are used to being promised the stars, and delivered a strikingly different game at launch.

Single piece of truth in the interview.

Still, don't take this the wrong way.

Darkfall could still very well be a decent game. Just not gonna be a revolutionary WoW... errr... MMO or anything.

Also doubtful that they have implemented their server "ideas" properly. I'd be surprised if it wasn't like shadowbane during first 6 months.

Single piece of truth in the interview.

Still, don't take this the wrong way.

Darkfall could still very well be a decent game. Just not gonna be a revolutionary WoW... errr... MMO or anything.

He's a WoW employee methinks.

My impression of WoW:

"A POS mothafecking game run by morons (albeit rich morons) with hidden tendencies to scream 'Carebear Stare!!?!' at people who piss em off irl."

My hopes for the near future:

"You have Email"

"Dear Swerve pls click on the following link to verify your Darkfall Beta Account to gain access to the Darkfall Beta Client"

"ARGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (comes in pants)"

"Frantic clicking on above mentioned link"

"Incoherent screams/shouts/grunts/pleasurable moans on guild Vent server"

"Rings workplace and takes a week off for my 7th removal of my wisdom teeth (gawd they cant stop growing boss)"

"Goes online while the client is downloading to order a weeks worth of healthy ready meals (gotta watch the diet man :D )

"Prepares Coffee IV"

"Unplugs home telephone line and switches cell off"

"Installs game"

"Char creation screen"

"Absolute mothafecking bliss (for a week at least )"

WHOS WITH ME??!?!?!?!:D

Haha, I see the MMORPG scene is as mature as ever.

FYI I played wow for a month and quit. It was decent but I didn't think it was worth it to keep playing. The last sentence was just newbie-bait.

I've been there for the whole Shadowbane timeline from early development to 9 months after release, and this is the same thing. (if they manage to get me into another ~400 vs ~600 ppl battle that might not be too bad tho)

Why will it be like SB? I've pointed it out already. They say a lot of stuff but none of it even makes sense. IE: Sure, knockback/collision sounds good, but in a live environment with a couple hundred chars on the field (and accompanying lag) it's nothing short of hell. And to do the sort of timing he's suggesting you'd have to be consistently playing at <100 ping, which I haven't seen in any MMO to date. It doesn't help that battlefields are where lag counts but those places generate the highest latency. The dust/smoke from fireballs or w/e just doesn't make sense, period. (think for yourself)

Whether the dev was intentionally spewing a bunch of bs or not doesn't really matter. It just reinforces the chances that DF = SB.
