I'm quite interested in history and have been looking for alternative sources as to where multiplayer (LAN, Hotseat, e-mail gaming, whatever) started, how it's evolved and so on. My request is for you to provide some sources other than wikipedia.

Thanks in advance - Tiarilir.

multiplayer started around 1997 really. With the advent of UO.

it wasnt' until UO became the smash hit it was, that most games even considered multiplayer. And even then, it wasn't until 2000 that games started coming in multiplayer mode. Most were single player sand box games.

who are what is tibia. I have never heard of that game. And i consider myself a huge gamer.

Her comment was "when did multiplayer start and manifest". I am sure as hell we coudl find another game besides tibia that was a "first".

but my point was, it really didn't take off, until the smash hit of UO. That is when most developers saw multiplayer as a progression of the gaming industry.

What about MUDs? Their place in gaming history is frequently overlooked.

I guess with D&D and board games. Where else would it have started? The Internet/mmos/etc all came with larger and larger multiplayer because it became technically feasible. There used to be e-mail games and things of that nature, as well.

but muds were not graphical, Not as hard to program. Different osi layering technology.
THe real challenge was graphical games, compressing the traffic so they would sync on each persons computer.
You look at the VERY first GTA game. It came with multiplayer. Ever play it? Laggy as shit on the fastest computers. The reason being, it was updating both computer will all the graphics and info at te same time, instead of (like now a days) creating a central server, which controls the update of traffic to each client machine. And to lessen the lag, only updates what each client/avatar can see within it's "bubble". So all other traffic is ignored.

And the first GTA was back in 97 or 98 i think.

Muds can't be included in tils question, neither can email games.
Especially email games. They are not really multiplayer in the sense that we have now.
All email games did was update the game with the "cpu version" of his move. Just text instructions of the "next" moves.
if i understand her question correctly. I think she means multiplayer as we have now. But then again, we need more clarification from her.

I believe Adventure was the first MUD but I'm certain there are other forms of multiplayer gaming that came before that.

Still, they were the spiritual successors to the modern multiplayer games. Not from a coding point of view, but from a gamer's perspective.

If you read the OP it says e-mail gaming is acceptable.

okay, then the OP has her answer.

But then that's like comparing apples to oranges to bananas.

if she wants to know the difference between the 3 types technically. She just needs to ask.
