I'm trying to convince my friend which school he should choose. Which would you choose?

Stanford: Harvard is full of rich kids.

That's not really an argument in favor of either, I'm afraid.

Edit - I said Harvard, but Stanford if he likes the more laid back nature of the West coast, b/c that is really a personal thing.

Well "rich kids" could imply that they are more pretentious and less down-to-earth, so she's basically emphasizing the question of who you would rather surround yourself with.

Harvard, since rich kids will include the kind that drink tea and discuss the world affairs in well pronounced English using phrases and words such as "indeed" and "quite so", and that is just epic.

Can't you just tell I'm British? :D

I say Stanford. Based solely on the fact that I think Standford sounds better than Harvard. Btw tell him to stop being such a noob and get his ass over to Oxford instead.

Technically Harvard is a better school overall, albeit not by a massive margin, but it largely depends on what he wants to study.

I won't respond to the poll until your friend's chosen field of study is offered.

Harvard has way more prestige, and if your friend is interested in marketing or something, Proctor and Gamble recruits a ton out of Harvard.

LOL, yah and Stanford is all middle class.

Anyways, you have no business telling people where to go. Your friend should just visit both schools, and decide for himself.

Stanford has an encyclopedia philosophy, Harvard has Obama.
I'd go with Stanford.

Yeah, really, as long as you go to a good school, undergrad doesn't matter too much.

But we do need to know what field of study he wants.

He's interested in business and genetics, with an emphasis on stem cell research I think.

This.

Take a cheap option for undergrad, then spend loot on a masters.

Proctor and Gamble is a joke. They offered me a job, they recruit a ton at my school and Im in New Mexico. Why would anyone want a job making fucking shampoo or diapers for a living? Fuck that.

Hahaha, nice. I'm talking about marketing products, dumbass. Not the baseline shit you are qualified for. Shit that can be easily outsourced.

hahaha, nice. Im talking about chemical engineering, starting pay around 79K a year developing chemicals/products for them, not that business major shit you are qualified for.

I was sitting at my second interview in Cincinnati while some guy was telling me about how rewarding it has been developing soaps and shampoo with P&G for the last 12 years. Why they fuck would anyone want that job, Id want to kill myself after 6 months. And that doesnt even get into how much worse it must be to be the person having to market those boring ass products.......

I'm sorry...fuck you and die in a fire. Seriously. Getting into the chemical engineering field simply because it pays $79,000 a year starting. It's people like you that turned "Big Pharma" and a variety of other chemical industries into what they've turned into.

Starting pay was 84k without grad school, not a big deal. really. But when someone is talking about marketing in the first place, you think you wouldn't be dumb enough to go into a completely different topic.

What other motivation should there be in getting a job? Do you actually think most people go into their field because they have some goal in it? :bang:

Although, I agree he's an arrogant douche.

....Yes, actually. People at desk jobs may not have real goals in their careers, but people in the chemical industry most definitely have the ability to try to achieve real goals, partly because they can (if they're worth their salt anyway) put together projects and then get funding to go through with them, instead of being handed tasks to be dealt with like at a desk job.

Perhaps I'm naive, but seriously, I have career plans that don't involve doing something I loathe just to be able to live out a personal life.

Yah, you are naive, and this is coming from a naive person. I'd say have your goals, but don't expect to have the power to fulfill them right away since there are obstacles. Many become become disillusioned once they get into their field, and all their goals go out the window. So you can't talk shit about everyone when you haven't been in their situation. Just be realistic about it in the beginning or you'll hurt yourself.

Go to any college, learn skill/trade, work in field, improve while doing job/trade. You can't learn everything in school. :ninja:

hah he didn't apply to Princeton. I was trying to explain to him that the environment of Harvard induces a type A (stress, OCD time management, suspicious association with coronary problems down the road) personality into a student whereas the Stanford environment would induce a type A/B personality into a student by encouraging them to conscientiously manage their time and also not stress as much while doing it. I'm sure the weather also has a major role to play as well.
