View Full Version : Are weapon ranks pointless?

I just did this little test:

Flatbow: rank 10.0
Durability: 57.0
Archery Skill: 36.5

After 100 arrows into a wall while naked:
Durability: 46.77 (10.23 loss 17.947%)
Archery Skill: 36.7

Longbow: rank 40.0
Durability: 68.0
Archery Skill: 36.7

After 100 arrows into a wall while naked:
Durability: 57.947 (10.053 loss 14.783%)
Archery Skill: 37.2

Has anyone tested the damage the same way? Does weapon rank actually mean anything at all?

well from your test it looks like weapon rank increases skill gain
which would mean it does matter

Damage is also increased. Was using Infernals for target practice to raise Archery.
With Rank 20 bows, was averaging 20-25 per hit. Switched to rank 30 bows and got
25-30 per hit.

Using appropriate rank bow also seems to assist skill gain, (ie. skill <25-rank 10, skill 25-50-rank 20, and so on), and despite what some others have said, actually hitting a target DOES seem to help with skill gain, at least it has for me.

Hmm you have rank 37 Skill and use a rank 40 bow...........we made test with staffs and it seemed that your skill is the cap. Your DMG is limited by skill OR by weapon Rank

Yeah, but

basic weapon skill
0-24 skill = rank 0.0
25-49 skill = rank 10.0
50-74 skill = rank 20.0
75-99 skill = rank 30.0

master weapon skill
0-24 skill = rank 40.0
25-49 skill = rank 50.0
50-74 skill = rank 60.0
75-99 skill = rank 70.0

(You know it works like this, because you get a message and a sound when you reach weapon skill 25 that says you reached a new level of mastery)

So I'm not sure how it could be either or... Maybe with staves it's different? Are bows different?

The whole system is very confusing.

I always thought it was rank = skill in 10's...

So, at 30 weapon skill, you'd be using rank 30 weapons. Yeesh.

Considering I have 33 in swords after playing since launch, I'll never get anywhere. :X

This is false. It is in increments of 10. Mastery has no effect on proper weapon ranks.

Well, that's the way the rest of the game works hehe, makes sense it would for weapons too. How can you be sure it is increments of 10? Has anyone tested it? I would love to know for sure how weapon ranks and weapon skill interact, because it's all rather confusing.

we tested a rank 70 2h sword.

One guy had rank 74 normal n no mastery. he hit for about 30-40

another had rank 80 n something like 41 in mastery. he hit for 130.

(it was enchanted both times.)

It also says you reached a new level of mastery with any entire point you gain, be it a total of 2, 25, 28 or 42.

The weapons are in increments of 10, and mastery is an "extra" that boosts damage, much like the sharpshooter skill for archers.

As well as having increased durability, so it lasts longer.

The weapons are in increments of 10, and mastery is an "extra" that boosts damage, much like the sharpshooter skill for archers.

The message you get at 25, 50 and 75 is slightly different (I think), but there is a "ding" sound you only get at 25, 50 and 75 anyways.

Why would weapon mastery be unlocked at R75 weapon skill if it's supposed to unlock access to a new weapon rank at weapon skill R100? That makes no friggin sense. Know why? Because it doesn't work like that.

After reading through a lot of posts, it does seem that Mastery is probably only a plus damage skill. So I think I'm definately sold on that part. I didn't want that /25 theory anyway...

So weapon ranks only matter for extra damage if your weapon skill is > or = the weapon rank, right? That's the concensus I'm getting. Hopefully I can test it if I can get the right people together.

Aside from durability or dmg issues, what about training up time?

As in, say you have Swords skill 30, would it take you the same amount of time (all things being equal) if you are using a Rank 0 (non-starter) sword or a Rank 20 or 30 sword?

No one knows for sure because of how random skill gains are. You would have to test it for hours and hours to remove the random-effect.

skill gains seem more based on the target your hitting vs the weapon / rank you use.

High defense mobs seem to give way better gains then low defense and not just cause you hammer on high defense / hp ones more. We tested this with trolls vs beastmen, beastmen were giving more skill gains per broken weapon (same weapon, same durability) than trolls were.
