I keep hearing ppl say that though two-handed swords do more damage than a one-hander, the one handed sword puts out damage faster.
Has anyone tested them both over a set amount of time, at or near the same weapon skill level, to find out just how much of a difference there is in DPS? It be nice to know the diffference between both mace and axe one-handed and two-handed versions too....but mainly I'm curious about the sword.
Unless you master Parrying, you are going to die many deaths with the sword and board setup.

with good timing, you should be able to put a one-hander to good use, hence the whole reason for them being faster in attack speed.
I'd just like to know how much of a difference they are in DPS than a two-handed version of the same type.
If you are European and have awesome ping then by all means you can entertain the sword & board approach. It is very good in small group situations. If you are one of the poor North American bastards though, I would not bother. Go polearm or greatsword; you'll need the area effect to compensate for the perpetual 200+ ping.
As for differences in weapons:
Sword has best reach. Club has less reach but better damage type vs. high-level armour. Axe has same reach as club, does same damage type as sword, but has an increased damage modifier. It is easier to find good swords & axes as PvE drops than clubs.
Most people opt for sword because the reach is just hugely beneficial.

I have 180-200 ping and am in san diego, CA. I don't have that much trouble landing hits with 1h sword, and am also contemplating picking it up as my main attack form.
I need to run a test tonight to see how the dps compares of starter 2h vs starter 1h, i've also heard some others say this.
Might be an easier choice for me if they are comparable.
*Definitely can't play with 1h mace/axe with 200 ping in melee (Mounted it works fine).

And the swing speed helps with counter attacks after parry.
As for raw numbers, nobody has tested it that far for what i know, but it´s very noticeable that 1-handers do less damage.

Landing the hits is not so much the problem as getting the proper parry/riposte timing down - which is the real strength of sword n' board. Against a polearm user you can almost permanently parry an incoming attack, get your own swipe in, and bring your parry up again in time for the next polearm attack. This is doable with higher pings as well, but much harder.

I figure that training in one-handed mastery, once the NA server would be up I could actually put it to good use, playing more defensively right now while on the EU server....but looking at how things are going now, it'll probably be a while before a NA server even pops up.
I already know the range differences for each of the weapon types (there's been enough threads about that, heh), but what I haven't heard is what the damage comparison is when factoring in attack speeds.

I'm pretty sure at end-game, you are going to be looking at more damage with axe/mace IF you just trade blows, but it's much much harder to hit with 1h mace/axe. Not so much because of the reach, but moreso because of the arc. Both axe/mace have a much smaller hitting arc, it seems to be about 40% compared to that of the 1h sword, which is about 60%.
