The chocolate chip cookie is good if you are looking for simplicity but the cupcake is far superior in terms of versatility and customization. Cupcakes are far more delicate so it allows the baker to use more subtle flavors such as different types of vanilla. Also, you really can't go wrong with home made butter cream frosting.. put a little almond extract and some orange zest in it and the frosting alone will be better than an average chocolate chip cookie.

Cookies are more portable, storeable and last longer. Also, you can freeze them and the texture doesn't change.

Cupcakes have icing so that automatically makes them harder to store etc. I love them but cookies pwn them.
