The problem was the "Never have to remake your character" stance of Aventurine. I agree this is less ideal than just allowing people to delete their fire magic school to pick up water, but it's better then having to delete your character and start all over to pick up water.

You still have to level each one up to get it to be useful. I thought grinding was the opposite of carebear?

Fuck this shit
I mean seriously, you guys are told to fucking choose and you all cried "WAH WE'RE IDIOTS WHO WANT EVERY THING EASY SO WE WANT EVERYTHING NOW"
Your ruining perfectly good game mechanics ya fuckers.
Now, in 2 months we'll have Arcanist Necromancers who weld all four elements.
AKA Magic is gimped now because you can get ALL the spells on a single character.

Yea, it's way more hardcore to have to delete your character everytime you make the wrong decision.
Started using polearms, but want to switch to greatswords? Delete your character and start over!

It'd be great if they had some kind of refiner/untrainer in the game that would allow you to remove purchased skills and reduce leveled up skills. I think maybe this would make everyone happy. I personally don't like the idea that everyone can take every spell school.

I'm not planning on doing either any time soon but I am curious.

Using one element should decrease the other though, hopefully they will add something like that.

Actually, yeah, it is.
It's called, if you don't think your decision out, it fucks you up. it's called, your forced to actually make a choice and stick with it, instead of being an indecisive re-rolling carebear.

Wow, i just regretted that i've spent so much time and so many reagents on leveling magic skills. It's just about the most pathetic and boring character type now.
I am kinda tempted to actually delete my character and make one that is not doomed to either being inferior or an exact clone of everyone else...
EDIT: And yes, people WILL run around with all schools maxed. Game's just about 1 month old and there's already plenty with 50+ in one elemental school. It might take a year, it might take two, but eventually everyone will be a 6x gm mage. Good job whining like babies for the easy solution...

Hopefully a future patch will implement that soft-cap.

Hopefully a future patch will implement that soft-cap.
Yea and by that time everyone will already be "Arcane necromancers of flaming water". No there's no solving this now, the damage is already done. And all the whiney little idiots are the reason. It would have been a great solution to allow people to unlearn a skill if they didnt want it, would even let us play smart around the soft cap if they were to ever implement it.
But nooooo, instead we take a pretty interesting magic system, bend it over, and rape it from behind because a couple people with egomania threw a tantrum over being unable to read.
I still want to be able to delete skills though cause now i want to remove my magic skills entirely and focus on something that doesnt cater to spoiled children with an attention span of a bloody firefly.

Honestly, I don't see where you get that from. I don't think I've seen a single whining thread about not being able to choose both fire and water, or arcane and necro. At least not here in the magery forum.

This is totally gay now... I liked the fact that you couldn't be all of them. It gave me a reason to laugh at people when they said "Damn I like your magic, sucks I bought the other one and can't change!"
This is not sarcasm. I do really hate being able to buy all 4 elements.
EDIT: I want a SS of someone with all 4 (or at least the opposites together)

I agree. I hate the idea that all magic is available. I was aimin' for air/fire, when I'm able to get into game that is. We'll see if I even go magic now...

It's called changing majors, dumbass. If you don't like Economics, BACK TO THE TEST TUBE, BITCH! NO EARTH SCIENCE FOR YOU! Since when did picking up a bow and arrow make it so you can't fire a gun? Those two fingers you use to draw the string can also be used to pull the trigger on a pistol, a SMG, or even a damn power tool. It's stupid to say if you do one thing, you can never, ever do anything else; and that's Aventurine's mindset, if I'm not mistaken.

The point is they should find a way to allow unlearning and keep the spell opposite rules in.
One thought would be... click unlearn... you don't unlearn it right away but you can pick up the other school and the one you unlearned decays per hour until it is gone... you can use your spells in that school until it is gone but you cannot relearn it for 2 weeks.

This was a bad decision imo. The choise of magic schools was giving nice flavor in the game and also it provide you a way to not be exactly the same with the other players. If they want to stop the clone machine they should implement the soft/hard cap soon imo otherwise every single character is going to be a carbon copy.

I don't see this as a problem at all, as long as some kind of cap is in place to keep people from getting higher ends spells in all the schools.
It goes against the "never have to reroll your character" standpoint which many of us loved about this game.
I agree that it is beneficial to have people not be able to train in all the magic, but having the option to go fire/water i have no real problem with cause im not a big rp guy.
I do have a problem if people are able to get rank 50+ spells in fire, water, earth, air, necro, arcane....but i am hoping that is just imposssible.

I bet there is no soft cap, just like there is no skill decay. If they did that its because they can't do it (i mean code the stuff) even in far futur. Also you couldn't have soft cap without skill decay, those go together to make it logical, how would you control your char building if you capped and couldn't unlearn. Those are not coded, its as simple as that imo.

The game is doomed! :D Well thats the impression im getting from people.
I agree that magic schools having polar opposites was alot better than having all schools accessible hopefully its just a bug.

I really don't understand all the fuss over being able to learn every school of magic. It's not going to "ruin diversity and make everyone a carbon copy" any more than the old system would. Eventually people would get max Elemental/Necro/Arcane magic, tests would be done, and people would find out what is deemed the "best" for the game, and everyone would roll those schools of magic (if you've ever played an MMO before, you know that this happens). People who learned the "wrong" schools would either unlearn them through skill decay or whatever system is put in place, reroll their character, or be stuck with a gimped character (which seems to go against the design philosophy that in a skill-based game you can pick something up, start using it, and get better with it). The only difference now is that for everyone to "be the same" requires them to grind every elemental school+arcane+necro, instead of just 2 Elementals and 1 Arcane/Necro.
And to the people (whom I'm guessing got LM to 50 for MtS, and haven't even begun touching GM) screaming OMG WHINING CAIRBAIRS U ALL WANT EZMODE WITH NO CHOOSEES AND TO GET ALL MAGIKS!11!1 I've never seen a single post on these boards requesting to get rid of the school restrictions, so stfu.

If this is indeed true, its a bad change.
Diversity should be a goal in itself, everyone being able to pick everything makes for a less diverse and grayer game.

for fuck's sake Aventurine, why?
There better be some kind of mechanic to prevent effective use of opposing schools, otherwise this is a fucking stupid back-off from their initial design.

Don't really understand the whine, sounds to me like someone is missing WOW with their rigid class systems. Of course all schools should be accessible to all. And yes I am sure some retards will spend time and money to grind themselves to 100 in all skills, but hey, that should also be possible.
Good thing is you can only do one thing at a time, and even buffs dont last that long, so no monster buff setups either. And remember you got a limited mana bar as well.
And for those actually thinking, consider the fact that Aventurine also makes changes to the game, sucks making a char based on fx. wanting to have long reach polearm as main stable only to discover that now that should have been two handed sword etc. Or they decide to nerf archery or increase magic damage etc.
