2H Axe

I'm currently on about 30 skill for the 2H axe but have been training up Sword 'n Board to for the added toughness. Is there any particular advantage to carrying on with the axe as I feel without the range of a 2H sword/polearm and the added toughness of a 1H + shield it may not be particularly good to use.

Can anyone comment on the dps of the weapon compared to the other two handers?

Swords have smaller dmg. But i dont know about dps since they're mostly quicker then an axe. Maybe it evens itself out

This is more or less how it all works:

Swords: Good range, decent damage, 0.4 speed
Axes: Bad range, highest damage, 0.3 speed
Clubs: Bad range, greater damage against armor, 0.3 speed

Axes do the most damage in the game (up there with polearms), and that's their thing.

Yeah, altough I'd recommend greatswords as a weapon! Good all around. Also, note that there are 3 different damage types:

Slashing
Pierching
Bludgeoning

Some armor has equal resistance to all (typically bone, leather etc) while the heavier armor (usually everything shiny, chaimail+) has highest resistance against slashing, then piercing, then bludgeoning.

So a plate chestpiece (just as an example) could look like this:

Slashing 2.0
Piercing 1.5
Bludgeoning 1.0

Swords and axes do slashing, polearms and daggers piercing, all clubs do bludgeoning.

Great one! Time to start thinking situationally. Perhaps a 2H blunt versus assaults on armoured 2H'ers and use the sword and board for the rest :).

As a Dwarf, a 2h-blunt is a must. You will look extremely badass, especially with a hammer !

sword or axe for a 1h + shield, dont go club, not usefull as a 1h.

as a 2-hander i'd either go 2h Axe or 2h Blunt. as polearm is simple to counter and Swords are boring:P
