which are the most useful spells in greater and lesser magic? or the most commonly chosen?

Mana Missile.
Heal Self.
Mana to Stamina.
Launch.

Stam > health is an amazing spell if used right, more for a mage though
unburden
magic shield good when leveld up also

For what it's worth, Eldritch Sphere and Rend are reasonably good damage if you're using a ranked staff, especially against heavily-armored opponents.

I need to play around a little more with Mana Drain...

All 3 transfers are good, along with Heal Self.

My personal favourite is Launch though.

Launch is, undoubtedly, the most useful spell in the game, followed by all 3 conversion spells (although most mages won't be using mana to stamina often).
