If I want to train my armored casting, should I purposely wear high encumbrance armor?
Or it doesn't matter.

A friend of mine is trying to get "battle mage" wearing armors and using unburden spell.
Wearing armors will increase your armored casting. Leather armors or plate armors don't make any difference in terms of increasing the "armored casting" skill.

Are you guys sure that Armored Casting reduces YOUR penalty from YOUR armor, and not the effect of the target's armor on your spells?

Yes, you can see the effect in your player stats when you are wearing armor, if you have no skill you will get the maximum reduction to your Magic and it goes down when your skill goes past 25.0, could be dynamic too but haven't been looking that closely.
32 Armored Casting and I can confirm that it raises much faster when wearing armor, but what is the optimal I don't know but I would presume that higher skill requires higher armor penalty for skill increases.

I wear cloth armour all the time and i see my armored casting skill going up on a regular basis. Minimal encumbrance too.

I do all my macro gaining of spells naked. 96 Lesser Magic, 34 Greater Magic, and I'm at 29 Armored Casting.
