My question is, is this like UO where if I try to smelt the ore its going to take half my ore away if I fail? Whats the best way of leveling this and benifits?
Should I have someone else smelt my ore into ingots and cut my timber into logs or should I do it?

I do it myself as it's much more forgiving than UO was, plus I'm raising extra stats.

If you fail at smelting or woodcutting you will lose the mats. If you fail at making a raft you will probably get to keep the gold at least. If you fail at smelting rarer ores you have a higher chance to get to keep the mats. With timber and iron ore though you lose it 100% of the fails.
I still think you should do it yourself as you do raise stats (at least wisdom) by crafting.
