Magic isn't broken its just a long grind, its costly, and you can't feasibly play as a pure mage.
MM + Bow works well.

Correction, you can't feasibly play as a pure mage this year. Maybe after a year of grinding your ass off and not really having any fun, then you'll have the leet skills to become a mage.
I wouldn't be surprised if this game lasts that advanced players will be known pretty much solely by their ability with magic.

Um, mana missle never really gets better, at 50 you get a second ring, and a little more damage that's it.
And they are right, magic is a long ass grind. I recently hit 50 GM and am now putting money together to get fire, i also have had no fun in this game so far..
(my own choice on the fun part btw, just grinding sucks)

After grinding for weeks I got to Water Elem today. If it turns out the INT buff at 75 Water isn't that great I will suicide IRL for not taking Fire.

Int buff is worthless atm. 5 or 10 extra int doesnt affect spell damage at all (propably stats arent working yet). And extra mana gained is less than u need to spend to cast spell :P
I think best magic trees is fire / air - cheapest reagents (mandrake / sulfur) and fire is nice damage.
Anyway I hope it is possible to switch elemental schools later in game without need to reroll character (in case magic gets fixed) - cause that would sucks.

I would sure be interested in knowing if stats are working currently. I made a note of my HP before my vitality went up today and after it did I didn't get an increase in HP at all...

I took earth for the melee buff/protection. You can't avoid melee fights in this game, and being able to cast in enchanted scale + melee protection with zero encumbrance will be great.

Necro sounds really neat, there is a health drain spell, which is a feature that has always rocked in any game.
Fire also has many very very powerful speells with huge DMG radius, which can do over 50 dmg to several targets, pure mages can crush entire raid forces when defending cities.

The character page rounds stats, you'll see an HP increase when you get to XX.1 vitality.

I'm pretty sure stats are not working. The WC debuffs have no impact on the skill they support.
It will get fixed eventually.

This is honestly what my conclusion is on the game.
Skill levels determine VERY VERY little. I am fairly certain that spell damage and such is determined by something like this:
X*(Staff coefficient) x Y*(Int) + basic damage(1-25,26-50, etc) = damage
Seriously, I think it works like this for EVERYTHING in the game. People are already certain that using better weapons makes a giant difference in damage. However, most people-myself included- who are hardcore spell casters are withing 2-3 int of one another. This is too small a gap to make any sweeping generalizations such as 'stats are useless.'
I'm pretty sure that the equation above is right, but I still need to do some more data mining. Yes, I have been keeping track, and this seems to be correct. From what I've gathered, the newbie staff/weapon equation looks like this:
X*(newbie staff/weap =0) x Y*(int/str/etc) + basic damage = damage
meaning for ANY newbie weapon or staff,
basic damage = damage
This would support why no one using a newbie staff/weapon has seen a noticeable variance in damage using them.
This is just the theory my data thus far has suggested, mostly for magic.
Any thoughts?

...
X*(Staff coefficient) x Y*(Int) + basic damage(1-25,26-50, etc) = damage
...
It would make more sense for staff and int bonuses to act as a modifier to the base damage, rather than an additive bonus. If the same bonus from int and staff is given to all spells as a constant, cheaper and faster spells would gain more of an advantage. Something similar to the following may be more appropriate:
(1 + c1*staff_rank/100 + c2*int/100)*base_damage()
Where the two constants can be twiddled such that the maximum bonus is reasonable. The rest of the possible damage bonuses sources could be applied in a similar way.

Mana missile splash makes it possible to hit the back almost every shot. making it hit for 18 ish.
This makes lesser magic very good.
Archery is still better.
There's one skill you need. One which is essential : mana to stamina. And you need 50 LM to get it.
After that, you can stop grinding magic and use your bow like a machine-gun.

Magic missile maxed out with all the LM skill buffs is nice :). Stack that on with a bow when your out of mana and your set.
