Now that is really well made imo. Best mob model I've seen in DF so far. Bravo!

Could a dev just for once break his silence and just tell us what is this thing called? Not too much to ask is it? Pleeeease?

And if we're the size of the necromancer at that big-dude's foot, you'll need like 3 billion points into strength to loot that corpse.

Considering what it is standing beside, my bet is on that giant thing being Malaut, Demon Prince of Greed and the cheerful bane of the Mercians.

I just wish I could remember the name of Malaut's underling-creatures, which is what that robed figure appears to be...

*Looks at bow and glances wooden arrows*

Shit...

Honestly though these guys have some really good artists and designers, they have some of the most unique looking items, weapons, monsters(even plain ones), and chars that I've seen in a looong time. Can't wait to see that monster from a first person, up to his shin, view.

It's up! (http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/672/672736p1.html)

Edit: The huge figure appears to be "Baron Sanglac", one of Malaut's favoured lieutenants. Nice.

There are also six demigods to prove problematic for each race...hrm, haven't heard of the alfar "demigod" yet, or even any faction that opposes Melek within the alfar race. Interesting. Will be neat to see who that is at some point!

I'm guessing the mirdain one is somehow affiliated with the Ciel Fey; we haven't had a name for theirs yet, but they already have the oppositional faction of the Ciel Fey. Orks have Draupnir, humans have Malaut, dwarves have Heimar, and the mahirim have the Moon-Beast.

Any game that encourages godslaying is okay in my books. :D

My first thought was a golem of some kind. But, I would expect to have body pieces etc if it was a flesh golem. My next thought was a frost giant. Then when I looked at that second render and saw the necro type model, I completely got confused. It could be just a mob that is being controlled some how.

Good stuff, I'm loving the model. I hope that these renders aren't too far off from what we'll actually see in game because they look great. But how the hell are we supposed to loot this guy anyway!? You'd have to bring a bunch of caravans and horses just to carry off with the stuff.

The only thing better than facing an enemy that size, is facing him in FPV.
and the only thing better than that, is facing him in FPV with hoards of allies fighting along side you. :) Also good to hear the looting will be worth while, not like those lame WoW Giants.
These renders are looking ace btw, I really hope they show us some more up to date renders of each player race.

Btw: what the hell is going on with that sword of his. It seems to be changing sizes in those screenshots. Maybe its just some fish-eye camera thing, but it doesn't seems to be. So maybe the sword has some weird magical properties and can grow and shrink (maybe small enough to fit in my backpack, heh).

Decius
12-01-2005, 05:24 PM
So that's what a clan quest looks like, huh? Freakin' huge! That sword look capable of taking out 10 or more in a single swipe. Nasty!

I wonder if those items that can gate you to the demigods' dimensions will let us bring an army in and gather word stones.

I really hope that the Baron's equipment doesn't magically scale down to Human size. That would be kind of disappointing.

Glory points? I hope we're not locked into doing quests like DAoC (from distant memory).

You have a good eye Virtra because it does seem to suggest that in the article.

"he wields a sword similar to his master's legendary Silvertounge, a silver longsword surrounded by writhing tendrils of black chaos matter."

I think it's perspective. He's far away when his sword is small, but when he's attacking you, it'll look freakin' huge and probably shread you pretty well.

My personal favorite tibit from the article:

"It is said that, in the past, demigods carried items that facilitated travel to their home plane, but there are no known occurrences of this in the present age."

Planar Travel? Hell yeah! I'm guessing once you down this big boy you get a chance for a planar gate item? Sanglac first, then on to Malaut in his home plane? I wonder if Sanglac reincarnated on his home plane is stronger than when on agon? I wonder what the hell happens when you slay a freaking major Diety!?!?!

I'm ready to tackle the moon beast! The hint in the article links directly to the website lore. On the Moon Beast from the Races: Mahirim section - "Unlike the other mahirim gods, he is not associated with only one of the moons, but with both: his rampages occur in the full moons of both cycles."

So dual full moons and he appears eh? Eeeeexcellent! Muahahahahaha!

This game is shaping up quite nicely ;) First day of beta will be most holy and made of win and god.

I'm betting they drop mostly $$$ and not so much uber-gear. Their loot sounds like it'll be a mix of gear and cash. If such a group is successful, they tend to find that a demigod's loot justifies even the most Herculean of efforts; fearing nothing, demigods bring cherished jewelry and preferred weapons with them to Agon.

If that robed figure is a member of the Below (http://www.darkfallonline.com/races/humans/allies_enemies.html) from the Human info (about 6'3" - 190 to 195cm) then that thing looks to be around 25 ft high. Kind of tough to tackle. I hope we can mount a ballista in the back a fast wagon!

It looks to me like glory points are primarily rewarded for doing quests and simply unlock more quests (and possibly some prestige classes). My guess is that they're not something you have to worry about unless you really want to.

Quote from Brannoc regarding that matter, found in the November 27th thread (http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=16485):
Teth is correct: these screenshots were of a development build with all the graphical options turned down or off. That's the bare minimum graphical quality there.
If you've seen the leaked PvP video - and there's no reason for you to have not - then you'll see that Darkfall can look a lot, lot better than those riding screenshots.

I seriously hope crafters are able to make equivalent weapons that drop off these guys.... if not welcome to EQII with PvP. Atleast they will be roaming in the world and not segregated in some Raid instance ala WoW.

Why does every fantasy MMO have to put pve raiding mechanics in? Organizing these raids is not what I call a good time. Neither is having to ally with another guild or grow your guild to take them on.

Atleast you can kill people who are in the middle of a raid and take their stuff. :)

Wonder if any clanstones will be along the "normal routes" of these guys. Would be another interesting factor in city-building to have to do a monthly defense against a critter like that. Of course if the city could actually defend I guess it might get a touch tooo rich from all the loot heh.

WoW was all about pve raiding and faction grinding for items/gear/etc.... With so many other options in DF, and only 6 demigods in the "biggest online world for MMO's", it's not like you're forced at all to do any pve raiding whatsoever. Plus, it'll be awhile before any groups can have the skill level and knowledge our their classes/races to take one down. This game keeps looking better and better by the day!

And another thing that would be nice, was if you could ally with a demigod and attack the demigods enemies, then the enemy demigod would come down and assist the defenders, hehe.

I'm not a crafter, I'm a GM of a pvp guild and I dont want to have to kit out 30 people with uber loot. I just want their to be an option: IE crafting or questing.

Sorry I wasnt clear, I dont mind the concept at all, I just think their should be options to get equal level loot. Also, so long as this stuff is fully lootable in pvp, its all good.

[QUOTE=Teth]Considering what it is standing beside, my bet is on that giant thing being Malaut, Demon Prince of Greed and the cheerful bane of the Mercians.

The demon shown in the screen shot is Baron Sanglac who serves under Malaut. Malaut himself is not shown in the screens. Below is a cut and paste from the IGN preview explaining it and the description given is of the demon in the screens.

Darkfall Peek #18
Malaut, the Demon Prince of Greed, has made it his life's work to corrupt the inhabitants of Mercia, Agon's most powerful human kingdom. His cult is spreading quickly through that land, with a steady flow of knights and nobles being lured into decadence by the machinations of the Below, Malaut's faithful servitor race.

Beyond mortal lands, the Prince commands the allegiance of many powerful demons that dwell with him in his home dimension, called the Shadelands. One of these Demon Lords is Baron Sanglac, who serves as Malaut's messenger to the highest echelons of his priesthood in Mercia, bringing new orders, occasional aid, rewards and punishment.

Silver and gemstone
Baron Sanglac is an enormously tall human figure clad in a massive golden field plate with silver trimmings. The symbol of the Church of Malaut is rendered in silver and gemstone on his equally massive shield. In combat, he wields a sword similar to his master's legendary Silvertounge, a silver longsword surrounded by writhing tendrils of black chaos matter. Sanglac doesn't wear a helmet, and his face is that of a beautiful but disdainful and haughty young man with curly blonde hair.

god the games not even out and already the crafters are bitching. Sorry but games like SWG sucked because every item could be made by crafters. there was nothing for us fighters to "quest" for.

Crafters have ruined more games than they have helped.

The materials have to come from somewhere. That, and you can (likely) get them from a drop.

I can't say I am as excited as everyone else is here. God bless hours of camping rare mob spawns. I'd rather have no rare mobs, with no spawn camping and no ultra rare items that get lost in combat or sold on e-bay. But if it will be in game I will be bound to participate at one point or another heh.

Not really. You can quest for items and get them for free (plus XP, plus fun of the quest, plus other loot in the process) or you can buy them from a crafter. Crafters generally make money on those who are too lazy to quest or are just not interested in questing, while those who do hardcore questing rarely if ever have to use services of a crafter.

Actually, you are forced if those drops give you that much of an advantage. The longer the game is out the more of those drops will be in circulation and before you know it you need those rare loots not just to get ahead, but to keep up. In other games I hated camping rare spawns, but I had to, as if I didn't get whatever rare drop it gave I would get owned in PvP as the other guy would have it. Even if it's just a ton of gold and gems, still if it is in-game you have to get it to stay competitive, or others will simply get ahead and roll you over.

So in the end your only options are to camp for hours, PvP against all odds and hope to get it as a loot from someone who camped for hours or to buy it on e-bay from some one who PKed someone who camped for hours.

You have a good eye Virtra because it does seem to suggest that in the article.

"he wields a sword similar to his master's legendary Silvertounge, a silver longsword surrounded by writhing tendrils of black chaos matter."

It could be black chaos matter, or it could be an optical effect given a different perspective at the sword from the various angles.

Look at the top pic and the bottom pic (not the middle) and tell me the swords are exactly the same size.

The sword in the first one is sideways and we are looking at it nearly perpendicular, whereas the one in the last one is more parralel to our view, making it look longer. Look at the right shoulder pad in the top one and the bottom one. Did the shoulder pad shrunk as the sword got bigger?

The images seem to be drawn from a Human-sized figure's point of view at various distances. That's why the Baron's right foot is so huge in the second image. I doubt his foot swelled from a long day of stomping troops.

The artwork is very nice but the story of robotic like (i.e. mechanical reactions) demi-gods pooping around a world full of PC mobs hacking away at their boots dosen't sound like something of interest to me.

Maybe I don't understand what I just read, but it really seems like there's a better way to me.

Suggestion: PC demi-gods.

this is a Wow factor to me, I didn't expect this game to just be a UT deathmatch with melee weapons. there has to be other "depth" to the game beside Peekaying.

why is it so hard to comprehend that PVE will have a place in this game as well.

It's not, but we havn't had any new PvP info really yet this week unless you count a few quotes from the #16 peek. And the exsisting fanbase aside, new comers won't be bowled over from just lore stuff, not that it matters too much.

Anything dropped from a Demi-God will be more of a trophy that you show off then a necessity, it wont make you more powerful.

well around the picture they are describing the demigods.....which in turn probably means he is a demigod. lets see you try to take him out let alone loot him

Oh yay a Darkfall equivalent of Ragnaros!
I'll admit its nice to have alot of PvE content when done right. Regardless of how tuff these guys will be and what you rag-tag "bandits" say you're gonna do, you and your 3 friends crashing into a buffed guild of 40 people is going to be like water crashing on rock. When the thing falls even 20 people aren't going to be able to break through a wall of supposedly "clip detecting" players. I don't even need to play the game to know from past experience with MMORPGs and PVP, along with the information given, a group doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. Then what will happen with time I wonder as crybabies begin occupying the forums more then the world of Agon itself? "Griefers are making raids completely unfun, I WANT TO HAVE FUN TOO"...One patch later? "Players now engaging a demi-god can no longer be targetted by other players for PvP combat".

Whenever I see mention of special loot, I know that with it, comes people who more or less have a "pretty character" addiction. People who will spend insane amounts of time in front of a computer screen to obtain loot for the sole purpose of staring at it and being stared at in the safest possible location where they will never lose it. They sit in town flirting via /teehee emotes with every player before finally everyone gets the idea that they want to be pretty too. You challenge these people all day to fight, you suicide rush them in town, you taunt them and they just go "lalalala i'm not listening /ignore /report!" ultimately killing the realistic freedom that make these games great. They move from game to game like a rich man's wife in a shopping mall. The worst part is it seems like the inevitability is that every dev-team ends up catering to these carebears. These are the players that fire up FF7 every weekend while dressed up like Cloud and look at themselves in the mirror while some random anime is blasting in the background with english subtitles. I know this because i've actually met several of these "PvE seeking" MMORPG players and honestly I was embarassed to even be around them, it's no wonder they seek pretty characters in a video game.

A month or so down the line you'll be seeing posts: "I stayed up for 67 hours straight! (They don't include the fact they neglected their children during this time) sitting waiting for the demi-god to spawn and finally pretended I was a girl long enough to have my guild leader give me my uber weapon. I was out taking screenshots of my character when an evil ork came up and killed me and looted it. THIS IS NOT FAIR" then you'll have about 90 posts (out of the 10s of thousands of people actually playing the game) saying "I agree, yesterday I was walking around in my underwear because I sold all of items to buy a crown of mana so I could pretend I was a king, and a master wizard cast a spell on me, obviously I didn't fight back since i'm roleplaying a pacifist in game...I died and he looted me!" not much long after Patch Note: "Divine Demi-God items will now bind to the soul of their user and only recognize them as the owner. These powerful weapons once looted off a demi-god will now be unlootable in PvP!" From what i've seen, when it comes to MMORPGs history repeats itself.

The vocal minority ruins games. Usually it's the pvp crowd that falls under that category but sometimes it's the pve crowd. All we can hope for is that the devs ignore the playerbase's whines once the game goes gold.

Godlike
01-11-2006, 06:46 PM
Still, like some mentioned, any time you talk about uber monsters and uber items, many of us pvp'ers will get upset because typically next comes, "undroppable". Bam, WOW again.

Tronglonok
01-11-2006, 10:50 PM
I havent read all this stuff, but why would uber-items bring "undroppable"? Noone wants that...
Just make them unique, so theres like one in game... and the uber-items wont get all messed up. That is, if there are any :)

Damevos
01-12-2006, 05:32 PM
Uber items that are difficult (very difficult) to obtain promote pvp anyway. Plus those that bitch about players ruining other people's raids are silly. If everyone was out to ruin everyone elses fun there would be no one left to play with. People will make compromises in order to accomplish mutual goals.
