This is footage of DUSK rolling mercs&friends, not of the Mercenaries fighting.

My laptop handled it fine with the occasional blip (and I didn't even think to turn down 3d sounds).

Its pretty impressive to see the game client handle that many players.

I don't have a problem with anything so far and I've had shadows set to max.

Would be good to see some formations used in combat.

I was a part of that raid and the key to keeping the FPS up was the shadows setting and the amount of 3D sounds. I had the sounds set too high and with 150ish people running or mounted it made for a solid wall of footsteps! All I heard was "clippity-clop" for the entire ride over and for quite some time till it was stated to turn down the sounds.

I have to admit the server held up fine and that most of the lag came from client side hardware settings.

Good Job AV! Im curious what GM Shadowfang thought of it standing in the middle of the chaos.

You do realise formations are useless right? A lot of people like to assume that since formations were good in human history they would be worth a damn on a video game. This would be true too if there wasn't such a thing caled "magic." Until there is an effective way of blocking magic without having to skip out of its way or countering it with other magic, formations will be useless.

we have tested specific formations and beyond holding specific positions they are mostly useless. there are places where it has helped but open terrain, there are too many ways to get around it.

I've never understood why people thought formations would be viable in this game just because players are now "objects." The only thing this game has really improved upon, tactical wise, is ambushing.

Everyone says it's a Zerg. Fact: This was a collaborative event between Dusk. They did infact have numbers...but should that be shamed upon? They were able to make a group of 280 people to come together, and successfully surprise attack The Mercenaries (Mind they had spies throughout the alliance itself).

People who claim it's zerg need to take their heads out their asses and look at the accomplishments that DUSK just did. They had only uncovered the real power of organization between other guilds, and released a deadly army that had the power of disbanding a clan. That power plays both mental and physical warfare. They did not destroy the city. Instead, they wiped it clean of all the hard work and accomplishments this clan called its own. They own a whole continent to themselves.

What you fail to realize is that DUSK did not Zerg or mass people and let them go free. It was an extremly tactical operation. When does numbers give people the right to call anything a zerg. They were better prepared, better geared, better skilled, and better operated/organized. Don't troll and flame before you understand the full intensity of the situation.

Dude thats a zerg.. look at the way everybody is running, no coordination at all.

Magic excuse is lame too, you can at least divide yourself into groups and those groups can then do a widen formation when they are being shot at by magic.

Zerg... nice.

Mass group of people WITH coordination = teh awesome

We use formations quite a bit actually and they are very effective. While marching, we are in a straight line. While fighting, range stands behind melee.

The formations aren't exactly like they were in "human history" but having some organization can definitely turn the tide of battle in your favor.

Im gonna quote myself on this one I think, I was responding to what aother guy said so you can ignore some stuff, but what I basicaly said is that some formations are viable but most aren't.

Tell me something, in Total War, what happens when the enemy routes? Mass panic, and often disorganization, for both sides.

Tactics are a viable thing in this game, so are formations, they just have to be different then our medieval time, because of magic. Although, thats not to say all formations are useless from our medieval time period. In fact, I bet some Middle East horse archery could be done. Or Hungarian battlefield assassin tactics, which were basicaly skirmish tactics, attack and retreat and attack.

What you see while watching that video is a bunch of running and jumping, I see new formations being made without people even realising.

Vindicore

We didnt even have 300 members though :p

To the opposing side any large army will always look like a zerg unless they are using tight formations, which while being somewhat effective are not what they could be in DF.

Bear in mind that formations were used historically not just for fighting and defensive effectiveness, but also for morale purposes; if you are packed in with your mates, you are less likely to run away. Also consider as said above that due to AoE magic, you are looking at a more futuristic version of combat as the spells can be likened to grenades, rockets and the like, while formations were only useful until those weapons widespread use; before they came into play troops could defend themselves against arrows using shields, cant do the same against explosives and bullets, or in DF magic.

DUSK as an alliance has a variety of recruitment standards, some of our member guilds are more open, some more closed; some require a monthly subscription for example. Most require voice chat use and all require that you are playing Alfar and follow the rules of the alliance charter.

heh who cares if it's a zerg. You can keep your e-honor, they'll keep your cities and loot. Fair trade

You're not really going to see formations in this game, besides the retardedly obvious and simple. There's no real benefit, outside of RP and feeling pretty about yourself. What will prove to be the most useful, time and time again, will probably just be standing in doorways so your mates and can finish destroying the building.

Well for a start unless somethings changed frombeta you cant fire bows from mounts.

And if you see 'new tactics' you really do have your rose tinted spectacles on. Again im not saying that tactics should be used, but dont try to say they exist they dont.
Beyond basic vent organisation skills there are zero tactics in DF.

Lets put it this way, in DF i used a polearm, easy to obtain armour (banded and chain mix) a bow and a staff for support spells (what virtually everyone used) and i rarely lost a fight against sensible odds, sure i got raped now and again in 4v1 or 3v1 but more often than not I won against most people, id say my win loss ratio was about 75% wins to 25% losses

Where as in a game like BF2 which does require actual tactical knowledge to play id say my ratio is about 20% wins to 80% losses.

I generally suck at twitch pvp cause i dont use vent and im not particularly good at twitch combat, in DF you dont need to be. If you have decent gear, a decent connection, use the right weapons and have a bigger group than your enemy you will 9 times out 10 beat them, regardless of what 'tactics' they attempt to employ.

In fact the hardest fights in remember were against completely unconventional oponents who used 'tactics' which, in many other games would get you butchered alive. When i say 'tactics' i mean, hefty use of sprinting, jumping, crouching and running around like a maniac.

Don't got much to say since it seems you added a lot about BF and your opinions on things. Anyway, that quote I quoted myself on was actually from the MO forums, at least I think anyway, but if its not then I think I was just giving examples of old formations that would be viable in this game, just to prove to the guy not all formations and tactics were useless but most were. Anyway, my fault for not remmebering were the quote came from, but this arguement is several days old.

As for the rest, it depends on what you are doing in game to see tactics that are useful or not. As you mentioned, in 1v1s and small group fights your going to see a lot of craziness, but when you get into huge fights you'll see tactics implanted really well. Take for example the Hyperion alliance, they will block in all escape routes from the clanstone once they are sieging the city. These shield walls would normally suck but since they are only fighting one or two guys at a time who are fully naked and just spawned in, they are very succesful.
