So I saw a nice clear progression in my harvest rate as my Herbalism Mastery was climbing from 1 to 25. Pretty sure I even nailed the formula: gathering speed in seconds is 10 / 1 + (MasteryRank / 100), i.e. 9 seconds at 11 mastery and 8 seconds at 25 mastery; it checked out nicely. Should cap to 5 seconds at 100 mastery.
And at 58 mastery, it's still 8 seconds. Just stopped improving after 25. A friend has lumber and mining mastery, reports the same.

Stop assuming, I got Herb gathering at 100 and Mastery around 60 and it still takes 9 seconds.

it's hard to figure it out because of server lag and ping. but you get .5 seconds per 25 so at 100 mastery 2 second reduction from total time it takes to harvest.

How in the name of fuck did you work out that horrible formula, OP? It's completely and totally wrong. It's not even close. It's way off. For every 25 of the mastery it gathers 0.5 of a second faster. 50 mastery = 1 second faster and yes, as the person above stated, 100 mastery will make it 2 seconds faster.
It's as simple as [Gathering] Mastery / 50 = time saved (in seconds).
or,
[Gathering] time = 10 - ( [Gathering] Mastery / 50 )
For gods sake if you're going to try and work out a formula don't do it off 1 value and not change your assumption even when you have 60 more values to work with...

Two seconds isn't nearly enough imo. If you've gotten the skill to 75 and then taken the mastery all the way to 100 I think your time should be nearly half of what it was to start. Especially considering the success rate doesn't seem to improve much. If anyone has obtained stats on how the skill advancement affects success rate I'd be curious to know.

I don't have anything at all accurate, as i'm too lazy. But the success rate seems to start at around 1/3 when you first start gathering and at 80 Logging it seems to be about a 3/4 success rate, maybe slightly less. I don't believe the Mastery effects the success rate, only the original skill. It's weird though and would be hard to accurately figure out without some kind of mod to record success/failures with.
Edit - I think a better way to do it would be 75 [Gathering] = 8 seconds right off the bat, not this BS giving you a second skill. Then 100 [Gathering] should = 6 seconds. This is how I originally thought it worked and I was overwhelmed by gayness when all I got at 75 was another skill that went up as I continued to Log wood...

They need to do several things:
Make mastery worth while by reducing time to do a single attempt, reduce stam used per attempt, and (if they implement the chance of a node to drop rare ore) a slight increase in odds of getting a rare ore drop.
Also providing a skill (to buy) to reduce wear on tools so they last longer (kinda like the one for increasing armour wear), and since they nerfed the node and put harvester at LOT greater risk something like Skills for Silent Harvesting (reduced range of harvesting noise), and Awareness (a greater view range while harvesting to reduce the gank factor some).

What a wonderfully forceful assertion. Shame it completely disagrees with my own data, and that of two others whom I can verify directly. I'm guessing you (and others) based it on the similarly groundless and easily disprovable myth that the only time any skill ever changes in effect is at the 25 ranks?

tejon i'm at 100 minning and 92 mastery both in minning. the time diffrance is .5 seconds for 25 50 and 75. i tested it as i skilled up. and tonight when i hit 100 mastery i bet it will be another .5 seconds faster.
all this said and done it could be but highly doubtful diffrent for say wood herbs and fish

This is correct, having 100 Mining and 95 Mining Mastery myself.

I just hit 75 Mastery and there is no change in my gathering speed. I stand by my original post.

ok tejons a fuckin lonely nub with only e-friends....but all fuckery and ignorance aside. i just got 100 mining + 100 mining mastery about 30 minutes ago. i only notice a 1.85 second decrease in time. maybe it's server lag but when i use my stop watch it always comes out to 8.15 seconds. so there's my 2 cents from someone who IS at 100/100

Guildy of mine has mining and mining mastery @ 100. My mining skill is around 70. THe other day we went out harvesting and at the end of the trip, I had 200 ore, he had over 300.
Conclusion- It makes a difference.

Absolutely. What I'm saying is that it only makes a difference until you're at 25, after that it doesn't improve.

Thank you for confirmation at the top end. I just hit 75 Logging last night, will pick up Mastery today and re-confirm my observations from 1 to 25 and from 25 to 50.

Based off numbers all through mastery of both fishing and logging. The gathering time is reduced by 0.2 seconds per 5 points gained in a mastery. Measured this at both masteries every 5 points, all the way.
If you're somehow getting different numbers i'd love to hear at what skill ranks you time them and using what method. Screenshots would also be nice since you seem to be the only person to get a different result than the rest of us.
EDIT: Should mention that my tests are made at a ping somewhere between 40 and 80 so the number i actually ended up with (0.192) have been rounded up to 0.2 in an attempt to compensate for lag.

Every time my mastery hits another benchmark (25, 50 etc) I edit the wait time on my macro down by another .5 seconds. It continually enables me to harvest at the fastest speed.
.5 seconds per 25 skill.

my macro clicks every 100ms so its always gathering fastest.

20% off the time isn't enough? I wish my arrows tool 20% less time at 100.

Maybe they don't want to damage their clicking fingers by clicking 10,000 times a day so they have computer click for them. Problem?

Macro for my second comp is set at 7.5seconds. 100 Herb and 100 Herb Gathering Mastery.
I know in a perfect world it would be 7 seconds flat, and I've tried it, but server lag doesn't allow it to hit right on every time.
So... I don't really care how much it increased it, I just know 7.5 seconds is the lowest you can get atm. (Or 7s if you were humping the server tower)

why the arguments?
all that matters is that @ 100, it's 8 seconds instead of 10 without the skill

Unfortunately the range thing wouldn't work too well, because if you "zoom in" while harvesting..you can actually harvest further away from the node...just to prove it, stand barely out of range of a node, zoom in, and then see if you can harvest it.

I am terribly sad that the gathering time are not instant, I mean I spent 200 gold for this skill. I should be able to mine a node in under 5 minutes. WHAT A USELESS SKILL, ONLY 20% increases in GATHERING. WTS MY GAME.

OP is totally wrong. As the last poster said, its a 20% decrease in gathering time. Which I think is pretty awesome myself. I can clear out nodes much faster than someone with sub 75 skill (ie no mastery)

DF's skillsystem don't work with formulas.
It's discrete skillgains at specific points. That is not even neccessarily at 25.0 steps but often. I had at least once a fat boost at 54.00 skill.
There is also a fat skillup around 10.0 weapon skill.
Formulas don't fit here. You'll go only nuts on that.
It's more a case structure like check the skill for >25.0 , >50.0 , >75,0 etc , with probably predefined skillups at the specific thresholds. Wich as said don't need to be always at the 25.0 skillups.
Dunno why they used this stucture in preferance over formulas.
Since it's most likely not faster than formulas.
But discrete skillgains, like levelups at certain points, have probably all player already experienced. So you just need to draw right conclusions from that.
I made as example checks with collecting ore/wood to prove these thesis. And found there is over wide parts of a skill the very same droprate. Just to surge at a certain point to the next 'level' of chance.
This fits btw exactly with the feeled non progress over wide parts of collecting stuff. You simply don't have a steady progress of your skills in DF. It's a hidden level structure embedded.

There are perks at certain mastery levels for nearly every skill, I'm not arguing otherwise. But the idea that this means the individual skill-ups have no effect is easily disproven with countless examples. For instance, do you have Survivalist? It increases food buff durations by 0.5% per point. Not 12.5% at 25, 25% at 50... every point has an effect. This is easily observed with Herb Gathering, which levels Survivalist and yields berries. Eat them, and you'll see a steady increase in duration. (This is easiest if you just picked it up and are gaining points rapidly, of course.)

OP, you're just a fucktardedly stubborn. I have 100/100 mining and 100/100 logging. Both take 8 seconds to complete a harvest. Quit making shit up.
1) Mining/logging/herb harvesting skill does NOT affect success rate.
2) Primary mining/logging/herb harvesting skills only exist as a requirement to get mastery at 75.
3) Mastery does not increase success rates; it only reduces gathering time.
