As someone who is waiting to get into the game, would a current player be willing to explain the different advantages of different weapon types? Thanks!

Yes thank you, those are the different types. Now what are their advantages over one another?

The benefits of each weapon are not really necessary to discuss. You might be asking "Why?" The answer is simple:

There are two weapons, the greatsword and the polearm. These are the only two melee weapons worth discussing.

Greatsword: Faster swings, less damage up front. Great range.
Polearm: Slower than greatsword, more damage up front, same range as GS.

It's pretty up in the air right now.

This is what I have heard:

2Hers
-Pole arm is flavor of the week. Slow swing, high stam drain, but wide arc, long reach, and a slight knockback. Good against other 2H weapons
-Swords are probably second-most popular. Long reach and relatively quick attack speed, but lower damage than pole arms.
-Hammers and Axes I don't know much about, but I hear they both have less reach. I believe axes do more damage than swords and do more damage to light armor, and I hear hammers do more damage to heavy armor. This is mostly just speculation though.

1Hers
-Daggers attack quick and special attacks refresh quickly, but they have dismal range. I hear you will drain your stamina quickly if you want to be effective with them.
-Swords attack fast
-Axes attack slightly slower but I hear they do a little more damage
-Maces again are blunt damage so apparantly they do more to plate and heavy armor.

Also don't forget 1H weapons as a rule tend to do less damage than 2H weapons while striking faster.

Really though how effective these differences are is really up in the air. While range damage and swing speed are noticeably different, I have not verified that some do more to certain armor types or not.

Thank you Mr. Shine, that is what I was looking for!
