Go! Now! (http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/671/671666p1.html)

What are you doing still reading this?! :/

Post-reading edits: not a whole lot new in this particular interview; mostly commentary on the development process. Some of the shots with drawn swords and horseback riding are pretty cool, although you guys should seriously turn on antialiasing while taking screenshots. :p

Confirmation of mobs dropping the equipment they use: plusgood!

The really good news, though, is that this isn't a one-off thing - it's Part One of RPGVault's Darkfall Week! :D

Do you know there exist lots of breeds ? Some are for example towering workhorses, growing to very large sizes, almost twice as large as the `typical` horse.. Lets hope thats the reason + the character is created small.

Errmm.. I hope they'll release some kind of Texture Pack for better textures, like that other MMO.. uhh.. Asheron's Call, I think. Oh and I sure as hell hope the game supports Anti-Aliasing :p

It looks like beta is actually coming in dec / jan!

Yeah, I am guessing that it is a Mercian warhorse sans armour. It only makes sense that a warhorse, capable of carrying a fully armed-and-armoured knight, would be huge and burly...

These screenshots look worse than the leaked PvP video we have, and that video is older than these screenies, sooo I am assuming that (for some reason) the interview screenshots were taken at rather low graphics settings. I don't quite know why, but it's the only logical explanation!

I personally thought the PvP video looked great, so I'm not too worried. I love the posture of the human on horseback, especially with the sword out and down to the side like in the last shot. Looks like you mean business. :D

Depends on whether you have your sword drawn 24/7. :P

I am guessing that this shot here (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?media_id=3236446&object_id=16821&channel_id=227&page_title=Darkfall+Update+Interview&adString=network%3Dign%26site%3Drpgvault %26pagetype%3Dmediaimgfat%26pagetype%3Dm ediaimgfat&return_url=http%3A%2F%2Frpgvault.ign.com %2Fobjects%2F016%2F016821.html) shows us what our "tight third-person" is gonna look like...seeing as we have a proper interface going on and the person is running around with a drawn sword.

Lack of experience has served us well in the sense we're not so aware of our limitations that they hold us back. Darkfall is a much better game for it.

Not an important point but I really liked the table and chair in the practice yeard (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?media_id=3236447&object_id=16821&channel_id=227&page_title=Darkfall+Update+Interview&adtag=network%3Dign%26size%3D468x60%26ch annel%3Drpgvault%26site%3Drpgvault_hub%2 6channel%3Dfeatures%26type%3Dpartner). very good news that they are finaly releasing new info, since it means the game must be getting into a decent state

also the stuff about the mob AI is great, i hate dumb enemies

didnt think the graphics were particuarly good but really i dont care, graphics mean nothing and low poly counts are most likely good in a game that focuses on large scale pvp

A. It's a fantasy game.
B. The rider does not have that large of a frame.
c. Even if it weren't a fantasy game there are larger than average horses that exist IRL... Clydedales are pretty large, for example.

Here you go. :)

Jonric: How well have you been able to retain interest among the members of your fan community during this time?

Tasos Flambouras: The Darkfall community has demonstrated that it doesn't need constant handholding and reassurances. We haven't done anything special to retain community interest, but I think that they suspect what we know to be true about the game, and that's why they follow it.

It's getting close to the point where people will get the chance to playtest the game. If they aren't looking at Darkfall now, they'll probably wish they had been. :)

Jonric: Still looking at the past year or so, what are the notable improvements and additions you've made to Darkfall?

Claus Grovdal: From a design point of view, nothing notable has changed from the main parameters. Last year has been all about adding content plus refining and tweaking various aspects of the game.

Kjetil Helland: We've spent the better part of the past year making things work and work better. It's been a huge challenge; the scope of this game is enormous.

Henning Ludvigsen: Art-wise, the most notable improvements have been the brushing up of the player characters, and the major improvements to the look of the environment.

Jonric: Are there parts of the base design that are not yet finalized? Will you be looking at any aspects especially closely during beta?

Claus Grovdal: All of the important aspects have been finalized. When it comes to conquest - player clans taking over cities and running them - we still have some unresolved issues having to do with balancing; we're concerned that it may be too hard, or too easy. We're looking forward to the clan beta test where we'll get the chance to play around with the various rulesets.

Jonric: In a related vein, what will the combat experience be like? Will it be quick-paced like you originally envisioned, and if so, how much advantage will players with good reflexes have?

Claus Grovdal: The combat system is basically the same as we originally designed it, with the exception of the camera perspective in melee, where we opted for a third-person view. Combat is fast-paced, with a lot of action elements, while still leaving room for quick tactical decisions on an individual as well as on a squad basis.

The player is completely engaged in the combat but you don't have to be an extreme twitch FPS type to be successful, although it will give you an edge, of course. It's a combination of strategic ability, stats and skills, teamwork, a good working knowledge of the interface, experience, and PvP tactics. Twitch reflex comes into play, but won't win battles for you alone.

Kjetil Helland: Collision detection and friendly fire makes it possible for a small, skilled group of players to be able to take on a larger group. Darkfall's player skill balance loosely reminds me of the Counter-Strike player balance; all other things being equal, if you're good, you can take on more than one opponent... but it's not easy.

Jonric: When Darkfall moved from Norway to Greece, what was the size of the team, and how much has it grown since then?

Jade El Mehdawi: We formed a new team and a new company, Aventurine, integrating the original Razorwax people, with the plan to continue developing the technology and the game in Greece. The Razorwax team in Norway consisted of four people working full-time and a couple more contributors with day jobs.

Aventurine was formed in October 2002, and it integrated the original Razorwax people. We hired five more developers in Norway, and brought them all to Greece. Now, there are 21 developers working at Aventurine, plus a number of support personnel (accounting, legal), contractors and interns.

Jonric: To what degree has it been difficult to find people, especially with game development experience, and how have you addressed this challenge?

Jade El Mehdawi: It has been a great challenge finding appropriately experienced people but I believe that everyone working here is extremely talented. In Greece, there's a lot of talent and knowledge, but until now, there was no outlet for it locally. We need to develop our people, so psychology and creating the right environment are key. The lack of experience created some problems for, us but I feel that we have a very strong team now. We've learned and grown from our mistakes, and we're looking to the future, the long-term. Our goal is to be making games for a very long time.

Lack of experience has served us well in the sense we're not so aware of our limitations that they hold us back. Darkfall is a much better game for it.

Jonric: In view of the duration of the project so far, how difficult has it been to maintain your enthusiasm? As both a developer and a gamer, what things have you most excited now?

Jade El Mehdawi: I don't feel that the development of Darkfall itself has been delayed. The main source of delay has been on the technology side, and that's to be expected. We're making a very ambitious and technologically advanced game. Everyone on the team knows this, and that's what keeps us going. We've risked doing things larger, which game developers haven't tried even though the players are asking for them.

Kjetil Helland: Making an MMOG requires a lot of stamina and the realization that you're not going to get a daily rush from development. You need to look far ahead. MMOGs are among the most sophisticated projects in software development. As a developer, seeing things work keeps me motivated; as a gamer, finally we'll be able to play a MMORPG that caters to the many levels of fun that I want to experience.

Henning Ludvigsen: Art has an immediate impact on your motivation, by the viewable result. We use small deadlines, and we get to see our progress regularly. As a gamer, the exploration of the Darkfall world is what excites me the most because I know the amount of work that's gone into creating it.

Jonric: Why should online gamers who have never looked closely at Darkfall want to learn more about it now? And will they be seeing more information over the coming months?

Tasos Flambouras: It's getting close to the point where people will get the chance to playtest the game. If they aren't looking at Darkfall now, they'll probably wish they had been. :)

We'll try to increase awareness about the game so that we can get a well populated beta test. We hope to be able to release a gameplay video, and new screenshots before that. A great deal of game information will be released during the playtesting period, and we'll try to allow as many people as possible to experience the game firsthand.

Jonric: To finish with our usual open-ended question, are there other things you'd like our readers to know about Darkfall at this time?

Tasos Flambouras: I recently discovered something new about the game that I think is very cool, so I'll share it. In Darkfall, mobs carry equipment and can equip themselves depending on the situation. They can wear armor, choose the best weapon to use, and switch them during a fight. If you run away, they may decide to equip a bow and shoot at you, and if you move in within melee range, they'll switch to a melee weapon. Kill them, and you'll get to loot the equipment the mob was using, plus anything else in their backpack. Coupled with excellent AI, Darkfall's mobs are very interesting encounters.

Thanks for the great questions and the interest in Darkfall.

Aventurine's decision to limit the amount of information released over the past while certainly hasn't affected our interest in this project. That said, we're definitely happier now that the team seems ready to start talking more. As we look forward to that as well as the upcoming beta, we thank Claus Grovdal, Tasos Flambouras, Kjetil Helland, Henning Ludvigsen and Jade El Mehdawi for this update, which kicks off our Darkfall Week series of features.

Quick clarification: okay, so apparently those shots aren't the absolute worst it can look.

Just...close. :P

100% no fancy graphical frills involved; I am guessing mid to low-range texture & model detail. But it can still go lower, according to clarifications made to me. How far lower? I dunno!

It still looks quite a bit better than EQ2 on low quality settings (http://www.nvnews.net/articles/everquest_2_graphics/images/extreme_performance.png) in its current state, so I'm not really complaining. When the settings are on more typical levels, we'll probably see stuff like shown in the PvP video - quite good, as far as I'm concerned.

Still, as long as it performs, I am happy. I could've forgiven SB all of its graphical sins if only its engine wasn't a horrific antediluvian monstrosity that performed terribly for no good reason. :D

Razel
11-29-2005, 12:07 PM
Figured as much Teth thanks for the clarification. H3ll i never run graphics at their max myself even tho i could.... I dont like any kind of slow responses at all :D especially in a huge fight! "We're preparing for beta testing as we speak"

thats exciting but how long does it take to prepare for beta?

Teth is correct: these screenshots were of a development build with all the graphical options turned down or off. That's the bare minimum graphical quality there.

Hmmm... but why take screenshots in the debug/development mode? Don't they have a non-devmode working at all?

I thought it looked ok really, apart from really realyl low-detail textures. Thankfully thats something thats laughably easy to fix tho, and hopefully just a result of details being on low.

I still think its strage that they don't put on all the graphics glory for when they publicly show off the product tho... I can believe the dev-mode argument however just by looking at the older screenshots which obviously have way more fluff and filtering on them.

New new (29'th nov one) had some daaaamn nice pictures, but they still disappointed. Thats because they were all eye-candy, and not in any way representative of what we are gonna get in-game. In a best-case scenario those were the models they scaled their real player models down from. I'd much prefer some screnies in full-detail-mode of what the game will actually use.

Other than that, I love them. If the orc look like that in-game I most certainly won't complain =) Fresh take on the orc, yet they still look kickass. Much much better than previous orc-model art we have been given so far =)

My guess about those renders is that the model and textures are the ones we will get ingame. Highest res prolly. But when you render a scene in a 3D aplication with global illumination and tons of antialiasing it is bound to look way better that it would when rendered by a game engine.

to give hope to the less fortunate, those with 2nd or 3rd rate systems? mayhaps.

I'm trying to think of something positive to say about this interview...

Nope, I'm over shadowed with wtf. The Darkfall team doesn't show us anything for years just so we can get another interview that can basically be summed up as "soon(TM)?"

I rarely visit this site anymore, mainly because I'm too busy. But when I do come here I hope for something more like this:

Interview Person with an IQ higher than normal: So uh, tell me something besides "Soon(TM)."

Non-Canned Dev Response: We're glad to give you a date because we sure wouldn't want to waste your time telling you "Soon(TM)" for the quad-millionth time. So here's a date for you - XX/XX/XXXX. We'll meet that date, that's why we're doing more interviews. Oh yeah, ask me anything about the game.

Interview Person that can ask hard questions and stop asking about lame ass crap on one cares about: Here's a hard question, please tell me about crap that I care about?

Non-Canned Dev Response: There's still full loot. Caravans are in. The economy is not gay.

Oh how I wish that's what this interview was like. Back to my busy busy world that I look to escape from only to be disappointed by more "Soon(TM)" nonsense.

I see you didn't understand that interview. It was primarily commentary on the dev process. The rest of the week will be crunchy details - like today's. Monday's was simply to bring the uninitiated up to date with what the devs have been doing since the Darkfall Peeks of the Week ended in December 2003, that's all.

Incidentally, I quite enjoyed reading the devs' commentary on how development has gone so far. Some of their statements were very interesting and compelling, like the bit about how their inexperience and the attendant fearless has actually been something of a boon.

I see you didn't understand that interview.

I didn't understand it? That's insulting. What's not to understand, take this interview and multiply it by 1000 and you have almost every interview we've ever seen.

I'd like to say that I'm looking forward to the rest of the week, but I'm not. Maybe I'll be surprised by the amount of details we get. But I've seen this same song and dance for how long exactly?

Don't get the wrong impresion - I don't come here for my health. I WANT Darkfall to succeed. If there were a way that I could help, I would. But since the only amount of time and effort I'm able to put into this right now is honest and timely commentary, that's what I'm doing.

Again, I find your post insulting to assume that I "don't understand" what I'm reading. I'll find it equally insulting when we get to the end of the week only to know exactly what we already knew before - Darkfall is coming Soon(TM). It's not that I'm trying to rain on anyone's parade here, I'm just calling it the way it is. If that day ever comes that we see the light at the end of the tunnel, I'll be the first one to "understand it."

Oh, and Teth...

I'm going to be retarded like this until Darkfall comes out, or it doesn't. :)

I love jaded Airius. How are the kids doing?

I agree with you more or less about the interview. No new information whatsoever. It basically just confirms that the development team still hasn't died in a tragic high speed car accident.

The sad thing about this interview is that you'd think it would cater to new Darkfall followers seeing as how shallow it is, but it is filled with so many useless questions that really don't make the game seem interesting. Who cares about the history of Aventurine? Produce a stunning game and then tell people about yourselves.

In regards to the screenshots all I can say is that I hope the interface is customizable and add-on friendly =).

In regards to the screenshots all I can say is that I hope the interface is customizable and add-on friendly =).Yes to customizable UI and a big no to "UI-Mod-add-on's". I don't want to install other stuff on my game just to be able to compete (like in WoW, what a mess with all the ui addon's - however at least the ui-mods lead to some improvments to the original one).

It's a start isn't it, hearing someone's making progress and that they're preparing for beta as we speak gives you a fair idea. The screenshots made me perfectly happy to finally see some riding shots, and the orc renders were a relief to know they don't look fat and stupid anymore. :p
And that was just the start of a weeks worth, the first official media in nearly 12 months.
I'll just be perfectly happy to lap up all the info they release and be patient like everyone else.
If all you care about is the release date and nothing more then take it to the back of the line bub. :ninja:

I love jaded Airius. How are the kids doing?

They turned two last month. That means that they've seen at least 400 interviews where someone says "we're going to let our game speak for itself as a service to the fans - oh yeah it's coming out soon but not soon enough to put a date on."

My kids will be able to play in beta, soon(TM).

Oh yeah, and we're having another child, Soon(TM). I mean, in about 7 months.
