I'm not sure if you could class Guild Wars as an MMO (it depends who you ask) but honestly I think that handled competitive PvP better. Nix grind = all you've got is who knows/plays the game better.

For non-competitive PvP (talking casual and lower-end here) it's a harder call, because GW didn't provide a lot of good options for that. Some people also like grind, so it is necessary to account for that.

Its too early for me to tell, as there are lot bugs atm and Darkfall suffers from release problems. Someone can say that queue doesnt affect the gameplay itself, but it does. That game had/has serious problems too. More serious than darkfalls but pvp in it was a lot like tribes 1. It was MMO and had some non-drop stuff but the actual pvp fights were great even if it wasnt completely full loot.

You had to manage jpack power much like stamina in darkfall but it had many different types of melee weaps, ranged guns, splash damage guns & magic as well as different damage types. I find tribes 1, jpack & guns more fun than being stuck on the ground using swords but darkfall is 2nd.

I was just commenting on this last night. DFO is a light and the end of a tunnel full of WoW clones and PVE centric games and games that claim to be PVP centric *coughAoCcough*

the last few years of MMOs in general have been pretty disappointing, but i think 2009 is going to be a solid year.

Its ok but not even close to the best. the PvP is not about skill its about Skill level. If you have the higher skill levels you win 100% of the time.

Magic is useless, buffs are useless, healing others is useless since the heals blow, make an elf use a bow and you win. this game is made for people who want to use a Bow. that is all.

Is Darkfall the best pvp game? Too early for me to tell as I havn't seen any pvp yet, just rampant player farming. The shit-weak and exploitable alignment system and the grindy gathering/crafting means that players are just grinding weaker players and weaker groups to get ahead in the game. Even when you join a clan it's just the same thing but on a more systematic scale.

Out of all the fights I've been in and watched I havn't seen anything that looked like a stand-up, challenging bit of pvp. Maybe some of the bigger clans are getting that occasionally, but for the most part it's all pretty predictable.

And that's just PvP. When it comes to MMO (PvE, Graphics, Gameplay, Casual-NoLifeWastingTimeSinks, Character Progression, Items, Crafting) this game is absolutely horrible.

Darkfall does have some great features, like Skills > Levels, except for the fact that Skills arent very big a deal when it comes to skill level, and skill advancement is slower than EQ1's level grind.

Give my skills meaning...like in UO.
Polish the game... so it feels smooth.
Give tutorials, easier access, learning, gameplay, and fun for newbies.

Asheron's Call pvp was a ton better.

In Asheron's Call you could win 1 on 3 or possibly 1 on 4 fights (and fairly often ) that were completely epic if you were skilled enough. 2 on 7 or 8 fights were easy if you were skilled enough and if you had 4 people with you, you could fight an army. It was 100% skill based and it completely shined in that game.

That is impossible in this game.

In asheron's Call you could have 30 stam, half health from fighting mobs, and if someone tried to gank you, you could focus, get your stats up quick, and win the fight....Also near impossible in this game.

In asheron's Call the twitch combat and game play was so smooth that it is still fun to this day..

Downfall to Asheron's Call pvp was that melee fighting was awful and was auto target, melee only could use twitch combat to dodge spells, besides that it was click and watch..

Also archers had to lock on targets and just fire away and the only variance they could do was increase or decrease range and how fast they shoot.

If asheron's call had the upgraded engine this game has and a FPS style game play for melees/archers it would be unparalleled for all time.

But it didn't so this game does have a chance to become truley epic. With the low level of character progression/ and crappy spell system, not to mention the sprint system it far away from that. It needs polish bad.

Yes and all the character progression and pve that this game fails horribly at can be added.

I want to stick around and watch the game grow but I would rather come back when its ready and not waste that time.

The FPS action of it instead of auto-targeting make it a close 2nd to UO. Sadly guilds have gone from small scale in UO to hugh zerg fests where numbers simply win 75% of the time. In that sense, UO will always be the best because people simply did not run in groups that almost completely reduce any risk.

IF DF drops flagging all together, it might overtake UO. Grey flagging, taking karma hits, having 1 person in a group do the killing blows is NOT hard core. SB got that part right.

Surprised no one mentioned Pirates of the Burning Sea yet. I guess nobody really played it. The ship combat in that game was the best PvP I've ever experienced. There were some great PvPers in the game with a lot of history who felt the same way. I haven't been in DF yet, but I don't think it will get the kinks out for several months.

Uo was GREAT before aos. not only because aos started the shitty templates and the unskilled game play but also many of the better players of the game still played. Now uo is boring with a zergfest of tamer pvp and point and click op conc archers.

Darkfall is still to young to determine But since being away form the noobie towns and fighting for our lands and helping our allies the pvp has been alot of fun. The tactical play of combining archers, mounts, and foot soldiers is just a shit load of fun.

Iv been waiting for DF for some time now.. have a clan (no1 got in yet) have everything prepared ( vent website ect..) and we have yet to get into DF, Not even 1 person has seen past the login screen..

UO pvp mechanics were not anything extraordinary, it still ranks as a great PvP game however specially the early days before Tramel.

And the reason is multifold, because it had a good combination of systems, which enhanced its PvP experience, from Economy system to Skill system to Notoriety/Reputation system, and of course its Communication system, which acted as the Chery on the top.

It was alot of fun in late 07 on the european servers. But i have to agree that the unreal 2 engine required a beast of a system to run high detail during a huge battle. This alone held L2 back immensely.

I remember a friend of mine having 2x 8800 GTS SLI , 6000+ black edition with 8 gb ram and a 10k raptor HD (for late 07, this was near top), and Still getting shitty FPS at times during large scale sieges.

I think the DFO engine will handle it much better over time.

I'm gonna get lol'ed off the forum for this but I'm going to openly admit the best PvP experience I had was in World of Warcraft. Before any of this Battleground bullshit or arenas. Tarren Mill at launch was near enough the whole server fighting each other, the lag was crazy but it was DAMN good fun.

Now World of Warcraft's PvP is awful.

Yes. The Seige "attempt" on Kill Cults hamlet was soo much fun. Starting out with a massive ride to the city in which we had to defend, that was incredible, seeing massive amounts of players banding together for a cause. And then the counter-attack (Although ended abruptly from the shard holder's crash), being alongside Mahirim, Orks, and Alfar (When in normal circumstances this wouldn't be the case) was a powerful, although scary feeling. This game has brought people together. Let's just say a clan, and every member contributes and gives precious hours into this clan and its city to see it prosper is a rare sight indeed nowadays. Darkfall is in my opinion, the best PvP and general MMO ever.

I'm gonna get lol'ed off the forum for this but I'm going to openly admit the best PvP experience I had was in World of Warcraft. Before any of this Battleground bullshit or arenas. Tarren Mill at launch was near enough the whole server fighting each other, the lag was crazy but it was DAMN good fun.

Now World of Warcraft's PvP is awful.

i only played WoW pvp and Warhammer online. they were both fun but here are the reasons why i left them:

WoW: very nice open pvp at beginning. bgs and arenas were nice too. played on high rating but...
- you still had to grind for gear
- instanced pvp is simply a minigame. you should not pay for instanced mmos imo...
- you could exploit the arena system and simply grind that arena gear.
- in the end there was no rpg feeling

WAR: very cool and tactical mmorpg. Warhammer lore is great and fun. very cool class-designs and skills. very balanced and team oriented. u could level up only by pvp but:
- again instanced pvp (scenarios) u had to play to advance (to level up character and for conquering an area)
- a lot of scenarios where not so well designed
- siege pvp was very cool, but again exploited instead of played (to gain gear...)
- no real open pvp because the quest areas where kinda separated and like in WoW there where too many mobs around for real open pvp.

so i hope for a better and more skillbased dfo atm :). a real ganking game with a decent amount of immersion and some rp playstile. a mmorpg where you win because you simply played better.

Fix the connection issues: over 200 people left a city to go seige, over 50 of them got dced and spawned back at the bindstone.

Fix the client: Apparently DF only knows how to run a single core processor. I checked the usage and one was maxed out the other was at almost nothing. The only usage came from vent on the second core. During a seige there was so much lag and frameskipping it was hard to do anything.

Fix the naked zergs: In UO a naked person would get killed in 3-8 hits by someone with gear depending on skill level. And the extra damage did nothing considering someone puts on one piece of armor and that damage bonus is gone.

After that maybe it will somewhat match UO pvp

With a group with me I knew we could take bigger groups out. In darkfall, I run in not sure exactly what is going to happen, Im still learning. UO was excellent pvp, as, with decent ping of course, it really was dependent upon player skill. at my best, i could take 4-5trams, even being d-mounted with pets on me, because i could just react faster than them. a couple of my guildies could take more. skill-based chars, twitch-freindly mechanics that relied on anticipation and reaction, with multiple templates being valid for pvp, to cater to a range of skill levels.

I like how you can actually use terrain to your advantage, i.e launch, or knocking people off cliffs for massive damage then pepper them with arrows. Sure some tweaks are needed, I just wished they worked on the stealth aspect a bit more. Like some sort of crouch walk ability with sort of "blurs" you a bit when people see you from a distance, so that that you just look like some shrubbery.

Well, I haven't played them all! That would take a couple of extra lives I just didn't collect the coins for to even have the time.... So far, hell yea, without a doubt. It has the potential to stay that way for a long time if Mortal online fails. With the lack of features that mortal has comparatively (seemingly), it would be tough. But if Mortal Online makes the combat better, especially melee, then the features like ships darkfall has might not make up for superior combat + unreal engine visuals. Besides that, it will probably all depend on the PvP rules and how easy/hard their alignment system will be. Really, all mortal has to do, is copy everything Darkfall is doing, and use the almighty unreal engine to make it a better game. Graphics don't mean shit though, and I will probably play mortal online on the side of Darkfall to test it, and continue playing both for awhile to see which one grabs my attention more. If AV can fix the problems with Darkfall and implement everything they say they will properly, it will be incredibly hard to match with graphics alone. I say graphics don't mean shit... But in AV's defense (alot of people bitch about graphics), the art direction is awesome and superior to other MMO's and the cliche cartoonyness of WoW, Warhammer, etc. AoC had the graphics, but if you lack the gameplay, psh...

So annoying how you say DF's pvp is simple. Guess what if you didn't have to click click, you would have auto aim/attack. That's much better isn't it. Or how about I have 1-9 on my hotbar and press it in order and pvp like WoW.
