Due to the large amount of time and resources necessary to train magic, I've decided to specialize in Fire Magic.
My current calculation is that I would need 25K sulfur to train Fire Magic to 100 using only Firebolt.

Honestly, I think youre looking at far far more than 25k sulfur... if youre gonna train, just do it with quickness and buy mandrakes from vendor. Less reagents, and cheaper.

Based off of what?
from 16 FM to 17 FM took me 110 shots. 110 shots at 2 sulfur each = 220 sulfur
100lvls - 16lvls = 84lvls x 220sulfur per lvl = 18480 sulfur + a random number for slower progression at higher lvls = 25000.

Oh, I plan on diversifying my spells, but hypothetically if I were to only use firebolt... And yes, the actual number of sulfur is very probably higher than 25k

it takes far more 25+, 40+, 50+ etc. It scales.
As i said before, youre looking at way way more.

This.
Were you not pay attention getting to 50 GM? By the time you get to 50 you're at 340-360 reagents per 1.0 with a noob staff.
You're probably looking at 150k+ reagents for 100 elemental magic.
*I've heard it's about 500 reagents per 1.0 by 25 elemental magic.

uhg. 500 per skill point will be painful.
This is the reason I've decided to specialize rather than diversify my mage trees.

I'd be expecting more like 200k :P
EDIT: oops meant 200k instead of 100k

200k isn't realistic, but I suppose anything is possible with AV

Does it matter what staff you're using while skilling?
Also, going from 25 GM to 50GM you can use what...heal other for 1 mandrake,
rend for 1 bone, are there any other spells that uses sulfur or resin?

Yeah, does the weapon rank of your staff matter as to how much skill you gain per spell cast?:ohno:

Noticed better gains when switching spells now and then.
Example, 1x heal self, 25x mana missile.
You may figur it yourself out for the higher skills.

Im at 40.5 fire magic. I have used 12k sulfer now. Its taking about 700-800 sulfer per point of fire magic now. Its slow... cant wait to get it to 50 so i cna take a break and work my other skills. Its expensive. Especially now that sulfur has gone up in price.

sadly it taking me 220 sulfur just 2 get like 1.5 greater magic lvl at 40 so fire would prob be double that at lvl 40

This is completely contradictory to everything else being said in this thread.

Is this with Firebolt? Or are you using other spells?

Well my firebolt is at 54.3, Impetus is at 19.4 and Weakening blaze(or what ever the debuff is called) is at 22.1.
Dragonsbreathe seems like a waste of mana. It hits initially, but it doesnt do the dot it like the description sounds it should. Maybe it does at 25 or so, but ash is too difficult to get in big quantities to level it up to test it.
I havent really tested Haste too much. Useing it on guildies at lvl 1 doesnt seem to do much of anything though.
Weakening blaze does help with damage. Its like a laser so its easy to hit your target with, but the duration on it is pretty low. You might get one or two shots of fire bolt in.
I havent bought the fire resitance buff yet as not too many people are running around with fire magic yet. Honestly i havent run into anyone out in the world useing fire magic for pvp yet.
I find firebolt a very good spell. At 50 it gains about 5 damage per hit and maybe a slightly bigger aoe on it. With the r60 staff you can make with alchemy at lvl 75 fire bolt does about 60-65 damage in the back and 40 in the front.
Our alchemist is on vacation this week so i wont be able to test r100 staves till he gets back next week. But firebolt definatly hits like a truck.
Now only if fire gains were as fast as air. Air magic seems to gian faster then fire magic and firebolt gains much faster then ball lightening.
Sitting at 39 fire magic myself but I'm really wondering about Fireball. In the old 17min gameplay video we got to see a fireball looking spell with an aoe knockback attached to it. That would be awesome if that was the fireball spell at 50.

basicly its costing you a shitload of sulfur because this
Lower Rank Spells level slower your fire magic at high levels.
for example
once you can get a new skill at any rank. i think 20 then 25 then 30 you get new spells in fire magic, that new skill will raise greater magic easily then a rank one skill.
so everytime you get a new spell. ASAP get it to 25 minimum. get every single spell to 25 as soon as possible. and skills will gain faster, you still will need to get spells like firebolt up to 40 or so and the buffs to 40 or higher and all the other weird useless spells right now, this will get you to 50 fire magic alot cheaper then it will by getting Firebolt to like 70
this is the same as greater magic also. spells with big cooldown take alot less casts then fast damage spells with low cooldown.
generally the self buffs and the misc spells with high cooldown like smoke signal or beacon. test this and you will success
