View Full Version : Is Alcoholism a Disease?

C++ Student

Is it really a disease where bacteria take over your body to make you drink alcohol or a genetic thing, or is it just a thing where you call it alcoholism but really you are too weak in willpower to resist a drink? (or you just like drinking and people call you an alcoholic as if it is a bad thing)

tell that to a cancer patient and they will shoot you in the face with a 40 cal

I've had second hand experiences with alcoholism andsubstance abuse, it's not a disease.

THey are choices

Alcoholism is one of the few diseases you can get yelled at for having.

"Otto, you are an alcoholic!"
Sounds way better that
"Otto, you have lupus!"

This ^^ speaking first hand. I was an alcoholic for many years. It just took opening my eyes to see the damage it was causing myself and thoes around me to quit. For those that do not quit I suspect they do not realize the damage they cause or care more about themselves then thoes around them.

My question is, if an obese person that is to fat to walk a parkinglot can apply and recieve a disability parking permit (obesity being considered a disease as well as alcoholism). Then why could I not have applied for a disability permit because I was to intoxicated to walk the parking lot?

Still I think it isn't a disease.
I think the only reason somebody will fail at quitting smoking, drinking, or whatever it is that they honestly don't want to quit.

My mom is an alcoholic and as a result I went to several meetings and what not with her through after she got 2 DUIs in a row.

Anyone who has been to a meeting and is intelligent can tell you it is all complete shit, they simply try to put their problems on other things but themselves. Rehab places are the worst, the only thing that makes them work is the fact they can't have alcohol in them, and willpower, nothing more. They want you to give up hope and find help in a higher power. Complete absolute, bull shit.

Yes I have noticed the higher power thing at several AA meetings I have been to with (a) certain member(s) of my family.

I agree. If someone really wants to stop doing something that badly, then they will stop doing it.

It's all in their heads. I don't stop drinking because I don't want to.

It's where the whole disease thing comes from. Alcoholism is an addiction nothing more, a physical and mental addiction, and the people who have serious issues with it are people with addictive behaviors. And AA or rehab isn't going to change that, hell, just go outside after an AA meeting and you'll find everyone smoking a cigarette. An addiction isn't a disease...

Uhhh, it's not just in your head, it's a physical addiction, not just a mental one. If we were talking about world of warcraft you'd be right. (well probably half right)

Drinking alchohol is not a disease, it's a choice. If you don't want to drink, then don't go to the store and buy some beers. No one is forcing you to do that.

I dont know if I would go as far as saying that. Almost every single thing that you do/ingest/use has harmful effects on your body. Should we stop doing everything? Breathing is the number contributor to ageing in cells. ;)

There's nothing with bacteria. Your cells wind up mutated.

That said, it depends on your definition. You're still in control for a very, very long time, and thus calling it a disease so as to externalize blame is foolish. Calling it a disease simply to describe it (which could be accurate, since your cells DO wind up mutated by alcohol use) is unnecessary.

Someone who sees distinct negative affects on their body must be stupid to keep doing what they're doing. Stupid or weak-willed, both are an unacceptable excuse for Alcoholism.

Lubrication can easily be supplied, plus, as you get older you'll find those self lubricating holes just don't have quite the same effect as when you were younger and will look to her other, nonlubricated holes.
