Can anybody recommend a free game engine/world builder? I'm looking to recreate a terrain from IRL populate it with trees and include some effects like fire/ atmospherics/clouds etc, not really wanting to make a game just a 3d world that I can navigate in.
I've heard of something called Unity - anybody used this?

Listen here, son.
Most apps that are free suck shit.
Go to EB Games/Gamestop and spend the 20 bucks for Unreal Tournament 2004 to get UnrealEd. Then just read tutorials and shit until you have the basics.

RPG Maker 2000
It seems dated and forget about 3d but you can really do some serious shit in there with a little knowledge of scripting.

Construct is a pretty good open source DirectX-driven game builder. I mostly use it because i am a lazy fuck who lacks the patience and time to write a real engine in a real language. I always end up with half-finished ones.

Unity is supposed to be great, but i've never used it as it only runs on Mac currently. You are going to need some programming experience to use it though.
I use Ogre 3d for game development, although again, your going to need programming experience to use that too.
Anything half-decent will require significant programming knowledge. Otherwise, there's a bunch of free crap out there to make crappy crap.

That all depends. I used to hate all those "Game Maker" tools before, however when i found all these great indie games that were made using them i promptly changed my mind.

NeverWinter Nights.
Probably find it in a bargain bin for 10.00, but it has pretty intuitive world builder. And there used to be ALOT of custom made stuff you could import into it.

Try using a mod engine or something instead, if can make any sense at all of the damn file types that half-life 2 uses as well you can also use that engine for free if you already have the game, Age of Chivalry and CSS was made on that.

I just found this little thing. Looks like its very user friendly, might even be a good time burner for those of us bored out of our minds waiting for darkfall.
