A while ago there was a thread about this game. I ended up checking out the game and have been playing ever since. Anyone else still playing?

waiting for decent 3D
Ew. What's your problem?
Dwarf Fortress would be fucking horrible if it was 3D.
Personally I love it and it's ASCII graphics which I'd never want to change. The game is great, though I haven't played for awhile as I'm waiting for the next amazing update. Toady is definitely the best programmer ever.

In a way I hear what you're saying. Half the fun is visualizing what is going on in your head. On the other hand, I wouldn't say no to being able to see that 10 story statue I'm building of myself for real.

I was waiting for the interface to stop being so horrible and for the the game to stop being so inefficient.
Bad graphics I can deal with, but the gameplay was just terrible with all the lag and frustrating interface. . .and believe me, I TRIED to get into it because I really liked the idea behind the game.

I understand what you mean. IIRC that's next on the list of things to do after the army arc. There is a program you can download which increases performance by quite a bit, and once you get used to it the interface really isn't that bad. I have most of it memorized at this point, besides for the things I rarely have to use.

Nah.. I'm busy with other games atm but I start this game every once in a while. It's awesome. :)

Didn't know about the program. . .it has been a while so maybe he updated the interface. . . but it was just disorganized, unintuitive and unless you memorized EVERY command I found it hard to find things. . and I am pretty good at adapting to interfaces (despite the fact that if I have the option of rebinding things, I will go crazy doing it).

Heh I thought this topic was gone... good save!
What's the weirdest thing you guys have done in the game? I'm currently building a massive statue of myself in front of my fortress (in dwarf form of course) after which I plan on building a tower of babel and moving everything into it. This is my first time experimenting with architecture.
Anyone else build anything interesting?
@Holychicken, the interface is still the same. You get used to it after a while though, I don't find it annoying at all anymore. You can find the program on the Wiki site- search for "lag".

I've tried it and really like the idea but I just couldn't get into it. It was too complicated to get started with and now I've got other things to do..

i got the tileset that mike mayday made, it just makes it look nicer and make more sence (barrels are barrels rather than divide signs). im happy with 2d but they definetly need to fix the interface.

I'm pretty certain I use that tileset as well.... I think I had a better one with the old version but I can't find it....
EDIT: Holy shit right now I have a child in a fey mood and I don't have the right supplies... I can't WAIT until that little fucker goes berserk...
I play, after seeing it here awhile back too. As for your wanting to actually visualize your constructions in 3D, there's a fan-made program called 3Dwarf that does just that. It works pretty well, although it lagged to hell until I turned off the help screen.

Wow thanks for that link... I doubt I will play in it, but it would be nice to actually see my fortress. I'll import my map and check it out.
EDIT: I am sorry to say the child did not go berserk, but got melancholy instead. Son of a bitch.
You can't actually play in it, but you can kinda look around. It's not the most impressive thing ever, but it is cool to see your constructions in a more tangible form. And yeah, the link is here (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=608.0).

Yeah, I googled it already. Thanks though.
Why the fuck did I thank you for a link you didn't give?
I dunno it really threw me. I couldn't tell if you were being sarcastic, so I figured I'd just post it up anyways.
I've never had a child go berserk, only had one have a strange mood once and he finished his project. Here's to hoping.

Aye, I got close... oh well, better luck next time I guess. Almost all my "strange mood" dwarves go insane due to the lack of resources in my fortress- I have tons of some things (cats and plump helmets mostly), but almost nothing of most things.
I find that a disappointingly large number of strange moody dwarves go to the craftsdwarf's workshop to make things that could be valuable, but then they get really useless skills out of it. Like a legendary wood crafter on a treeless map. Are most of them going insane because of a lack of correct workshop or not having something dumb like silk cloth?

They are going crazy because of lack of materials. Funny you mention the craftsdwarf thing because every single one of them has used that workshop IIRC.
Yeah that one seems to be the most common. I think it's because the dwarves usually go to their strengths (i.e. armorcrafter to forge to make armor), and peasants and children make up a relatively large portion of your total population. For some reason it seems to just default to craftsdwarf things.
But if you do get a dwarf that looks like they're going to make something useful (weapon and armor are big ones), it really pays to get them what they want. Unless they're possessed, in which case they don't gain any skills even if they finish the project; so all you get is a fancy item.

Didn't know about how the mood worked, interesting... now I just need my armorer to get one. Big ass shield would be sick... although he'll probably make an adamantine towel menacing with spikes of adamantine and adorned with rings of adamantine.
If it's any consolation, that would be an incredibly valuable towel.
Also, your soldierdwarves can't use legendary items until they reach 'great' status. Like great macedwarf or great shield user. The legendary weapons do impressive damage, even if you're hitting them with "Toolforge, the Lemur of Regret."

I've got a bunch of Axe Lords, not to worry... no legendary weapons though, at the moment all I have is a weapon rack, a scepter and a bracelet.
Hmm, my furnace operator just went fey and is currently standing in the middle of my dining room. One more death to chalk up to the pursuit of wealth I guess.

Great game, at the beginning a bit hard to swallow but it worst it. A very nice game, i wish more of the "great game" that you buy in shop were as interesting as this one.

Im currently playing in adventure mode. I went back to my old fortress, picked up a full plate of exceptional adamantine platemail / chain mail / shield, and some masterwork obsidian swords and an artifact mace.
Also filled my backpack with about a page of my fortresses artifacts. Fun times.

Yeah but there is a large gap between new player and getting use to the interface.
I find its horrid, very unintuitive. Lack of mouse makes it even worse.
I spent 10 minutes trying to get my dwarves to frikkin dig into the mountain with no luck, then some 8 or so mandril monkeys came out of nowhere and raped all of them.......because my skilled axedwarf, my only fighter, was nakid for some reason I'd rather not know.....
If you can't get the very basic things done when you first start, its not a good interface.

Someone needs to complain less, read tutorial more.

That will guide you through everything you need to know to get a basic fortress up and running. Its not the best interface in the world, but theres SO many commands and options, it sort of has to be that clunky.
