View Full Version : Gaming: Favorite RPG of all time?

Alright, starting this thread just out of boredom, I was wondering, what is your Favorite RPG of all time?

You can even separate it as Linear and Open-Ended, or further, i'm just curious to see people's opinions. Just know, I don't want to see "That game sucks" comments, and if I do, that post will be ignored.

I have two:

Linear:
Tales of Vesperia

Open-Ended:
Elder Scrolls 4 - Oblivion

By you. Your opinion on what we should or should not post is irrelevant. Regardless, I don't think we've had one of these this week so...

JRPG: Xenogears (Anyone who hasn't played this and who likes JRPGs is a filthy fucking heretic)

CRPG: Diablo (I loved the ambiance, although I played 2 much more)

I apologize, I didn't mean you'll ignore it, I just meant I would. My english isn't so great. I have trouble putting my thoughts to words.

I think the GTA series were my favorite slightly open-ended RPG of all time. M & B is pretty fun right now though but there's not much content to keep me occupied for long.

Teh RPGCODEX (http://www.rpgcodex.net) is the place to talk about best rpgs, indie rpgs, space sim rpgs, whatever. If you search for 'RPGCodex' on the bethesda forums it will change the search term to 'I LOVE OBLIVION' lol

Some of my favorite;
Darklands - Old but very versatile in what you can do
Fallout 1 + 2
Baldur's Gate 1 + 2 + expansion
and of course... PLANESCAPE TORMENT! This thing reads more like a book than a game. True to the term 'interactive movie' which is what they used to call video games. This one is about a horribly scarred immortal struck with chronic-amnesia(Not too chronic that he's clueless, though) wandering the infinite planes of the multiverse to find his identity and end his torment.

Also www.rpgwatch.com is good for RPG news. Currrently I'm waiting for DFO and Drakensang.

Which one? The second was a bag of shit, the other two were good but you could definitely tell that there were problems with the devs. It's a pity really, I'd have loved the seven game series spiritual sequel they promised. After they fired the Xenogears devs though it was kinda obvious it was a dead project. I was surprised they even managed three games.

Xenosaga did have better gameplay though, my fondness for Xenogears is simply because no other RPG has ever even come close to matching it in story.

Ah, so you've only played 1/3 of it. Well, the first is probably the best of the lot, although the third is good as well. The second... It's not enjoyable, but you can force yourself to finish it if you're patient.

Ah, well. It'll probably still be here tomorrow, but I know what you mean. I often feel discouraged by Forumfall lately, even when I want to post.

Still need to start Tales of Vesperia actually, just finishing up Persona 4 which was better than I thought at first, although not as good as 3.

Going out of town tomorrow til Sunday, I probably won't be using the internets for that whole time...we're attending my grandmother's funeral :(

Vesperia is good though. Just give it the initial work it deserves and you'll enjoy it. Oh, but don't expect too much from the side quests; most of them (and there aren't a whole lot of them) are pretty lackluster.

Remember to bring along a book then.

Yeah, you mentioned that it was a slow start before which is why I'm cleaning up Persona 4 before starting. Although the more side stuff I do in Persona 4, the more bored I become with the game. It really doesn't stand up in comparison with the earlier games sadly. At this point I'm practically ready to just start Vesperia, and screw it.

Someone did mention it, and neither of them are that old. Both my favorites were released before either BG, and further BG and BG2 weren't that great. They were good, but nothing on say Daggerfall. Hell, they wouldn't even rate in my top ten CRPGs.

If you want to talk about how people in this thread are young, you'd need to be mentioning something like Rogue (which, in my opinion sucked even for its time).

Fortunately I have a good one: I'm about 100 pages into A Game of Thrones. I also have good classes this semester...it's creepy but I actually enjoy reading the textbooks for these classes.

yay! Baldur's Gate 1&2 were my preferred ones too.
It might not have dialogs as good as in Planescape Torment, or the freedom you have in Fallout, but it had a beautiful mix of great tactical combat and story (plus Sarevok is one of my favourite vilains).

Darklands was excellent too. Open ended, tactical, with a good combat system(but a horrible inventory one). Too bad it has no successor :(

Fallout, Planescape Torment, Vampire bloodlines(great atmosphere in this one) would be close contenders, but I didn't like the core gameplay as much as in BG (vampire bloodline has an excellent atmosphere). It looks like the secret of great PC RPG making has been lost since this era (or developpers are too lazy to make games you can play for 100 hours...).

Both my favorites were released before either BG, and further BG and BG2 weren't that great. They were good, but nothing on say Daggerfall. Hell, they wouldn't even rate in my top ten CRPGs.

Couldn't get into the Elder Scroll series. I need some tactical depth in my RPGs (or at least, a good action oriented combat system).

Books are often interesting in my experience, it's the teachers and classes who usually manage to ruin it.

A Game of Thrones is good, if nowhere near as good as most casual readers will tell you. Still, it should last you at least a day unless you're a speed reader. After you finish that series, if you need some suggestions make a thread. There hasn't been much talk about contemporary fiction around here lately.

Arena, Darkfall, Morrowind.. overall TES is my fav. crpg series but didnt like Oblivion (on PC at least)
liked Neverwinter nights too..
hmm some old Might and magic game i think.. dont remember but enjoyed it a lot..
since GTA:SA has stats lets say that too ;)
Eye of the beholder..
Neuromancer (on c64 but you might call it an adventure game)
the original 2 zelda games on NES and the one on the original gameboy..

never got to play fallout 1 and 2 back then but just bought both on one dvd.. :)

i remember some other series from way back i really enjoyed, but i played tons of crpgs back then, nomatter if they was good or crap (good ones mostly ofc).. so i cant remember all those names from so far back ;)

but since you didnt say Crpg, imma say White Wolf's World of Darkness stuff :)

There are so many which i like equally for different reasons.

But since i have to choose, i'd say legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. If someone thinks it's more of an adventure than RPG, good runner-up is Silver sharing position with Final Fantasy VI (III in states).
