Hello. I'm just going to list off a couple different "features" that might prove interesting in an mmo that really could be made inside a few years. This might be a bit blocky, but bear with me.

1) True virtual reality. No, that doesn't mean you put on a headset and use a joystick to move. It means that you are quite literally in the game world itself. For an example of what I want to see, think Matrix without the need for body modifications.

2) Infinite progression. Basically, if you work at something hard enough, there quite literally is no true ceiling to your progression in power inside the game. Someone could go from absolute newbie to demigod status if they so wished.

3) Infinite creativity. In effect, all that the game makers do with item/skill/etc creation is set some basic guidelines and let the players/npcs do the creating. While there might be some pretty large applications of stuff inside the game already from the get-go, nothing limits what those who inhabit the world's creativity but their willingness to progress and their resources.

4) True AI. No, this isn't the standard "if/then" stuff that is normally referred to when people think AI. I'm talking about something intelligent; something capable of learning. The basics are already figured out for this. Just look up a guy called Gerald Edelman. He's a leading scientist in the development of brain-based devices (BBDs) which use this precise method of AI.

Yeah, that combination of things would be very difficult to implement even on their own, let alone all at once. However, presuming that it could be done tomorrow and be able to have one "server" host the entire human race in a world with the above stuff and have a similar size as this world, what would it be like? Use your imagination with this. I personally see something about as close to a sort of paradise as we could possibly get on our own. A world where anything is possible, literally? Sign me up.

AI is incredibly hard to program like that, If you have ever used gamemaker all you can pretty much do is if-then, but you could make it a very smart if-then. Plus that would fire up the lag, becuase the coding would be enormous.

Virtual reality... not with todays tech

Ifinite progression, what would stop a person who kept getting more powerful, so after a while he could take out entire armies with a single spell, while everyone else would have to put mor and more time they might not have to match this guy.

Infinite creativity, whats to stop a person from creating and UBER-EPIC sword of one hit killing awesomeness. you should be able to make certain recipes for crafting, but they have to be controlled alot more than you say.

Your name makes me stab puppies. For this I will not respond with anything other than a GTFO and a DIAF

Now that my e-badassery wore off. I would like to see these things. But I don't forsee them in our lifetime

The 1) choice would be amazing. Not possible in our lifetime though.
I remember some guys in X-files scanned their life into the internets before dieing. Try doing that.

In short it sounds as though you just described the system of the working Universe. We all know how complex that can be broken down too. I imagine it would be much like living in today's world except with whatever fantasy setting it was set it.
