Opinions about this?
I'd say its kinda ridiculous, really, they know they have the most power lusting and competitive playerbase mmo's have seen to date, and fuck, now they're making us pay for having the advantage over non-beta testers and those who don't make it into "pre-order early access release" as its damn sure they don't have server capacities for 1 server to hold that amount of people for now.
Here's to hope the stress test goes well, I'll be expecting crashes.
And something that makes this post fit into off-topic section (As I wanted your opinion, not theirs).
I like it rough.

I've never heard them say they wouldn't do this, and why not? If you're still going to buy the game its not costing you anything more. You should look at it as an opportunity for you to play before people since you have been following the game before the people who are going to join on release day. Also, this is probably good for them to test their setups and make sure that everything is ready to go on the actual launch day, by letting their pre-order customers play then. Or if it really bugs you that much, its not going to hurt you if you want to boycott this to show the how mean they are for letting us play earlier.
Don't spill this crap into the OT. I got here to take refuge for ten minutes at a time.

Pre order for early access is a bad sign, but it's a refreshing one. It's reminds me of the other bad signs, like the delayed and sometimes missing updates.

Tshhh, just to tease you.
And, if they force us to pre-order then I will, but the problem is I really don't trust them with this, NDA not lifted and they'll be tossing in pre-orders? Sounds like Age of Conan vol 2 to me.

Why do you even go into GD? It's like having someone throw a wrench at your nads.

Give them a break. They probably realized they're going to need 4 servers instead of 1 at launch and have to make adjustments, big deal.
About the pre-order.. early access sure as hell beats something stupid like a pet or an item no one else can get. It doesn't bother me.

Woah, an mmo needing 4 servers, you gotta be fucking kidding me!!!
Seriously, 9 years of planning and they didn't catch that bit yet?

Each server will probably hold around 50k players, if they stick to their "10k simultaneous" promise. I doubt they expected to have a couple hundred thousand potential subscribers even before the game was released.

Didn't we reach 200k members just shortly after they released the gameplay vid?

It may not be that big of a deal but if they couldnt project those needs based off forum use, etc, they need a new guy on their team somewhere. This leads me to believe it is more than just logistics of server/infrastructure.
But I like that there will be a open beta of sorts, for added testing and whatnot. Going live without that, and a some time for corrections, would have been suicide.

Well.. I forgot. But plans for more servers aren't just made in one day. I think. Meh.
If I'm not in the first batch of Jan 22ers, I'll be a sad panda.

I'd say the best pre-order was to make sure you have the copy of the game in your possession once the game launches, but sadly, they'll be tossing in privileges for pre-orderers.

Actually, they have. Not exactly on this very subject, but see for yourself:
Speaking of public beta, I read someone wished we would give a date, and equated that to professionalism on our part. I won't disagree with that, however giving a public beta date in order to get preorders, even if that means you have to announce consecutive delays, while professional, is not part of our business model.

Not that I'd be royally bummed by it, as business will always be business. Just wanted to point it out.

this. Aventurine has projections, I'm sure, but they really don't have any hard expectation numbers for how big things may be 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after release.
So instead of prepping for a pissant-small response, and getting wtfraped; or prepping for a megarelease and wasting money they haven't got, they're going to let their subscriber base make itself known before they commit to buying coloc hardware they may not need

You can't pre-order something that doesn't exist.
