You probably have already seen this if your a 40k miniature gamer, but incase you haven't:
It lets you paint your very own space marine in any color you wish. You can also add wargear and things to the space marine. Very useful if your thinking about giving your Big Blue Smurfs of Doom (Yes, the ultramarines) a new paint job.
Damn ultramarines..get all the credit *grumble grumble*...:ninja:

I know two girls that play 40k at my local hobbyshop, you fail. One actually works there, AND can paint.
But more on topic, it's fairly cheap now. Mostly plastic instead of pewter.

Just started playing myself, I used to play LOTR a few years ago, then moved and didn't remember where all my stuff had gotten to. A couple of months ago, found it all, started playing again, and I also now have something like a 1200 pt. Eldar army...
They're pretty good. Versatile and hit hard, I've wiped out whole squads of space marines (not necessarily entire tact squads of 10 guys, but weaker guys, like snipers, maybe grab a small combat squad of 5-6) with one bladestorm from Dire Avengers. Rarely, but still pretty epic :P
There is also an Eldar Guardian painter for craftworld choosing on GW's site.
Isn't it a bit ironic that the girls who play GW go WH Fantasy? Typically Dark Elves? The whole aim of the DEs was to draw in guys who liked looking at half naked women running around with swords, yet apparently, women started playing as them...strange. The few of them that play 40k roll Sisters of Battle or Eldar too.

Used to have a 4-5k point High Elf Army, a 2000 point Blood Dragon army, and a 1-2k point Space Marine army with a fair few landspeeders (or whatever they're called). Played the Sons of Medusa Chapter, played them with iron hands rules from White Dwarf. Then i realised it was all too expensive and started drinking.

I was a 40k player, played Tyranids, was a fantasy player befor that.... WAS.
I'd still play it if I'd just hang with some close friends and get drunk and al that good stuff, but the few of them who still play, (and got me into it in the first place) al play at a local nerd club.
And when I say nerdclub I mean it, sure they had al the terrain and stuff you could ever want, but half the people there pissed me of by just existing.
...
But I digress.

I had 3k points worth of space ork stuff. Unfortunatly this game isn't balenced well at all and they were wank.
Space marines shoot you from a distance, they blow up your transport and have better armor than you.
Space wolves are all that except they are also better at melee than you.
Tyranids out swarm you.
Necrons out survive you.
Orks were just bad, thats why I ebay'd my stuff.
I've been considering getting into this. My girlfriend is going back to school (Younger women 4tw), and I will have a good chunk of free time.
I have no artistic skills at all though. Will I be able to paint them without having them look like shit?

Depends, if you pick Necron that shouldn't be a problem, just dip them in metal colours. Marines and Tau are easy to paint aswell.

I used to paint models like this when I was younger. Having a steady hand is more important than artistic ability. Mixing colors that don't look gay is more difficult than actually painting the figure, and making it look good.

Just to help out on the painting side, theres only one simple technique you need to know to make your models look reasonably good. It's really easy as well, it's called dry brushing.
What you do, is dip the end of your brush in paint (usually best if its a wide and stiff bristle) and then proceed to wipe nearly all of it off on a bit off tissue. This will leave a residue that you then flap past an area on a model that you want to highlight.
A basic use of dry brushing is paint a machine gun solid black then use a silvery paint to highlight it.
I didn't do this (http://www.nelefa.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/dwarfcannon.jpg) but it highlights the powah of drybrushing. It's also really fast and easy.

Lol, my other forum account was banned and I had a bad reputation on it so I repented my sins to the Emperor of Mankind and now I'm back, strength renewed with 60 Full Baneblade armored columns each with 11 barrels of molten hell, ready to go sir!
Honestly though, GW usually buffs marines first so if you like the storyline and never dying with good firepower + melee, go marines.

Hmm i have been thinking about getting into Warhammer 40K. Years ago i used to play Mechwarrior clix and then quit when they took my favorite faction out of play (Steel Wolves, in case anyone knows what I'm talking about). Every once in a while i think about getting back into it but they made a lot of stuff in the game retarded now.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some information on War40k. Or a good/cheap way to get started and see if i like it.
And as for everyone bashing table top games. They're the next evolution of chess, and if you don't like chess its because you suck at it, so stfu.

Depends what kind of person you are really, but theres a website with entire backstories on every race, quotes, pictures of 40k weapons, how they work, everything.
Read through the races and see which one you like best. As for getting started, I Don't know. I suppose you could order from ebay or Amazon for people who are selling off their 40k stuff, or you can just go buy it at a GamesWorkshop. Depending on where you live, one should be near or in a popular mall near you.

Go to your local GW and say 'i'm interested in learning to play, where should I start, do you do an newbie open day?'
That's what I did, sort of. I found a load of models in our loft so I took them in to see what they were and if they were worth any thing and they invited me to the newbie day they used to do every sunday. That was good fun, they let me borrow a few units from a show army and have a ridiculous free for all with the other newbies on a massive table.
That was fun.

there's nothing better then having 5 players where everyone goes FFA. I remember when I borrowed a bunch of Catachan Jungle Fighters (Imperial Guard) by a friend and the other folks used their ordinary armies and everyone went FFA. When all the genestealers came and my Guards started shooting at them, and at the same time a friend came with his Eldar Avatar, slaughtering everything in its way. Good times.

While I'd love to call him an idiot, all it takes to avoid an IP ban is a proxy. It's not even worth their time to go banning people/deleting their posts unless they're actively doing something wrong.

I'd recommend picking up a starter box. It comes with a basic rulebook, 2 tiny armies, some rulers and stuff like that. Basically it's the full game in a box. If you like it, pick out an army you want to play as, get their codex, and start collecting pieces.

I recommened attending a free newb day at a local GW before you buy anything, but it all hinges on how much someone thinks they'd be interested.
