View Full Version : What is Trammel all about?

Hi there - I've been playing MMO's since early EQ, but never played UO. I hear a lot about pre-post Trammell on this forum, and am curious about what that was and what it did to the game. Anyone want to share? Thanks

Trammel made a duplicate world that acted as a gigantic safezone.

They decided to "split" the world in two, trammel and Felucca. Basically, tram and fel were two EXACT COPIES of the same world, but in trammel the PVP was disabled.

Pretty lame for a pvp sandbox.

So there were two of every area/zone in that game, one was PvP and one was all safe zone?

You got the choice of playing in shitty carebear world or open pvp world. Just imagine it as a PVP server and a no PVP server.

Hm, yeah. That IS pretty lame. All the Trammell mentioning makes a lot of sense now. I have to say though - it seems like from all the dev quotes I read, they themselves would have been in the Trammell-hating camp. I've never played a full PvP/full loot game before, and am really looking forward to it. Hope it stays that way.

This is a touchy area for some people. UO used to be 1 land called Sosaria. One day we woke up and everything was dead and there was spooky music playing.

Everyone moved to the safe world called Trammel that was an exact copy of our land that was now called Felucca.

You could go between worlds by using a stone or a moongate. Although if you were a red you could not go to Trammel. You were stuck in Fel.

This was the beginning of UO becoming a safe game to play. They started power scrolls that allowed you to increase skills and stats and you had to do get them in Fel, but people quickly ran back to Tram once they were done. Not many people stayed in Fel once they had a safe option.

It changed the community. Pre Tram everyone had to band together to survive.

No, I don't play WoW. I tried it, and found that it was extremely boring and repetitive. Same with all the other MMO's launched in recent history. That's why I'm really excited about this one.

Trammel marked the point in MMORPG evolution where the first company to spearhead the genre into the mainstream effectively killed the natural evolution of the genre by aborting any successive ideas in the womb with an act of servile boot licking at the feet of what it perceived to be competitors for the same audience.

What's wrong with my name, anyway?

Only reason I asked is because they use the name Ellik for Elephant.

Oh really? Heh, that's too bad. I guess I never got that far in the game. I thought this was all original.

Trammel is what causes PTSD in veteran UO players.

Post Trammel Stress Disorder.

See? See what I did there?

This was the beginning of UO becoming a safe game to play.

That alone was the reason for the split. I'm not trying to defend the trammel mindset that happened, I was a fel player, although not involved in pvp. (I sucked at it) When you'd go with a group of players to a dungeon and get ganked, repeatedly, its hard to enjoy a game. When you'd go out mining or chopping wood and get ganked by 3-4 guys who then say they 'pwned u' it stops being fun. This happened enough that it became a problem.

When people stop playing a game because its not fun, companies lose money, so they had to change things. Basically because of a few idiots. When money is on the line viewpoints change pretty quick. Darkfall may end up down a safer road if things get too out of hand and they start losing revenue, regardless of what they say right now.

They started power scrolls that allowed you to increase skills and stats and you had to do get them in Fel, but people quickly ran back to Tram once they were done. Not many people stayed in Fel once they had a safe option.

Yeah, the seperation really hit the community hard, you can still see it in the animosity that is viewed from both sides. I didn't like power scrolls, but it did bring people into fel, which was a good thing. Depending on the shard you played on there were pvp or pk guilds holding tournaments that brought people into fel as well, which I thought was cool. I remember Adam Ant having 'find Adam and kill him to win a prize' tournaments that a lot of people came out to play in.

It changed the community. Pre Tram everyone had to band together to survive.

Yup. One of the good things about just fel was more co-operation with people. I argued on the UO boards that Trammel would ruin the economy as well, inflation would soar up because you could also just run through monsters with no dex hit. When trammel came out I hit the lich room in tram and made 100k in a few days, a huge sum back then. My suggestion that they at least remove the running through monsters bit was ignored. I also noticed idiots coming in that could barely survive screaming 'heal me, heal me' and also kill stealing. This never happened in fel.

The idea to make the game more fun for more players was a good one, however I think they could have done it better, and it just got worse over the years.

Ya I remember when I was new to the game 2 reds kept me and 5 other people locked in a house. Every time we tried to fight we would get spanked. We ended up calling in everyone we could find to come help. It was a great community back then.

By the time I was strong enough to become a murderer I went on a rampage. I loved fighting groups of people that were hunting you. Running them around separating them, taking them out one by one.

Or I would cast GM Poison fields and run them through them then cast earth quake. It was a roit to watch a group of people falling like flies.

They would always run right into my PF thinking it was a newb poison that would wear off after 3 ticks. They would always end up running in circles trying to drink potion after potion when the *You are wracked with extreme pain* flashed across their screen until they died.

I remember many times having to call in guildies to come loot the dead bodies because I just killed a group and my inventory was full.

I hope I get an option for a disarm stun mage with a deadly poison type spell.

You attack me. I disarm you, stun you, cast a poison on you then blast you until you are half dead then run around you and laugh at you till you die. Then sit back and wait for the hate tells.

If this is your mindset, I don't think you are going to like DF very much...

It was a sad day. I saw my cousins playing UO back in the day. He shot someone with a crossbow and stole his gear. It looked fun.

a month later after I convinced my parents it was ok to buy (They didn't trust credit cards with the interweb) I found the world totally different. I had purchased UO right after the split... I never experienced the fun... *sob*

What mindset? Because I can understand that people don't like getting ganked everytime they log in? Or because I can understand the realities a company faces when they start losing subscriptions? I don't have a problem with pvp, I think it adds a lot to a game, but other areas of gameplay deserve just as much attention.

I played UO almost from day one and never had a problem with pvp, nor with getting killed once in a while. I learned to play outside of that and became quite successful ingame. If DF comes out I'm sure I'll find my niche.

The introduction and split of trammel/felucca definitely killed my fun with the game.

You see, I did not play for PVP s much. My friends all played and enjoyed the pvp with guild on our shard. Me, I played a thief. I only fought people when I was attacked (like when I was flagged gray for stealing or looting). My enjoyment came from running around, snooping peoples packs, stealing regents or boat keys, enjoying the thrill of stealth / fleeing... being a nuisance. I was one of those annoying thieves hanging out around the bank in orc gear and newbie clothing.

Well, when trammel hit, 95% of my targets for thefts went with it. Banks in Felcucca, where stealing from other players was only possible, where almost entirely empty of players... save for other thieves like myself. All my marks were now safely sitting in town on the trammel side of things. The game died there for me along with alot of changes that happened around the same time.
